Halo 2 was so bad I had to facepalm my way through the game until I stopped at the second level or w/e.
The game consists of open-ended gameplay similar to Far Cry's, which can be approached either tactically or straight run-and-gun (although the difficulty doesn't really allow it) with very entertaining vehicle sections - hands-down the best vehicle sections in a shooter. It features some repetitive section, almost nowhere to be found in the sequel though. The A.I. is downright amazing: three years before Far Cry boasted its squad AI, Halo had it. All the enemies have different tactics and personalities. They know to retreat and regroup, flank, the squad has ranked officers etc.
The level design is great, Bungie follows a unique design school: make the levels feel as natural as possible, then tweak it to be playable. That's why the outdoors sections are so good. It's true that The Library is horrible copy/paste, but the rest of the levels are just fine. Not to mention that Mass Effect's final hour or so ripped off Halo 2's climax.
Also the story is good, with a generic yet well made plot and the protaganist is badass space marine.
The gunplay is good with weapons that feel, look, and sound appropriately alien/futuristic and allow for some cool tactics. Especially when dual-wielding was introduced. valvefan84
There, fixed that post for ya.
I don't own any console.
Multi-player Halo is good; single-player is bleh.
Compared to other classic console FPSs I would say Goldeneye had a much better single-player and equal or slightly better multi-player (it was also more revolutionary for its time IMO).
Halo doesn't really stand-up well compared to classic PC FPSs- its an average to good FPS at best.
Halo is fine. The singleplayer is pretty bad, but the 3rd one has co-op, which is a lot of fun.
The multiplayer is often simplistic (assualt rifle + beatdown), but depending on the weapons you have, you can get some pretty intense gunplay (you've got bubble shields, energy drains, vehicles, turrets, mines, etc.). It's definitely not generic... I don't think there's another game that plays the same way as Halo.
The only thing exceptionally bad about the game is its community and the network coding. The game is certainly over... hyped by the community, but that doesn't make it bad by any means.
You mention a bunch of singleplayer FPSs. Yes they are better than Halo's SINGLEPLAYER for the most part. Honestly, CS:S is more generic than Halo. I'd rather be playing CS:S, sure, but that's for its community, mods, and somewhat realistic gameplay. TF2 is about the only game on that list that far exceeds Halo in every aspect of multiplayer. It's fun, definitely not generic, good community, constant updates, and requires a lot of teamwork.
What I like about Halo... The Multiplayer. Getting together with friends to play multiplayer on Haloone was a blast. The single-player is generic and simple, yes, but it's entertaining, and that's what matters.
When it comes down to it, I'd rather be playing a simple, clean and fun game, rather than some complicated yet innovative game. Most of us play games for fun, and that's exactly what Halo is, fun. Every now and then it's nice to play a game that puts a new spin on the genre, but... Eh, I'll just leave it at that, I'm starting to sound like a broken record.
Halo (the first) was something a bit special when it came out, the SP AI was like nothing else at the time and the MP had a good following.
Halo2 was not such a great hit for the PC. PC gamers clearly owned the console fan boys and they didn't like it. After a while microsoft basically cut PC users out of the equation.
Halo3, like most things when its been done twice before was an epic fail. It didn't even look much better than the PC version of Halo2. But then again what exclusives did the xbox have ?? :P
The only people that play Halo3 are people that:
a)Played the previous 2- not much to learn but a few maps.
b)People that only own a 360
b)People that have 'friends' playing it. Basically means anyone that is either a fan boy themselves, knows a fan boy or would like to become one.
Its like Zelda on the Nintendo. That game sucks so hard but ask any body on the WII forums about it.
Than again I'm a PC gamer and my tastes clearly arn't reflected in mainstream gaming so what do I knnow.
IHalo is the Final Fantasy VII of shooters, a baby's first game and extremely overrated. There are even better console FPS like Red Faction and TimeSplitters. Halo also ruined the genre with that stupid regenerating health mechanic. Ignore the hype and the hate, and all you get is an average game. Also Halo fans, stop watching crappy Michael Bay action movies and watch good movies like The Visitor or Gomorrah.valvefan84
Final Fantasy VII was a frickin awesome game... I think everyone has their opinions, but I really think just haters hate Halo. It's not an amazing game and after Halo 1 the single player became pretty mediocre, but the MP has always been pretty challenging. Halo is one of the shooters that has a very wide variety of tactics that can be used and makes a lot of use of teamwork with the high HP and shields of the opposing players. I don't think it's a great game, but I think there is a lot of bias involved when someone says the game blows....
I agree. I respect some games for being innovative, and even more so if they successfully execute it. I mean, I loved the many game modes that UT came out over its series - or Brother in Arms with its flanking tactics - or Crysis with the nanosuit. I even remember sitting for 30 minutes in Rainbow Six, making detailed pathways to plan out a hostage rescue. But sometimes... I just want to shoot some damn aliens. I played Halo on Xbox and PC enjoyed it. I liked the single player, but I never experienced the online for either platforms properly. When it comes down to it, I'd rather be playing a simple, clean and fun game, rather than some complicated yet innovative game. Anyone who thinks it is the worst is blind, anyone who thinks it is the best is crazy. It is a decent shooter imo.

I am so ashamed.... can someone point me to the highest building?Halo is overrated crap and anyone who likes it and is a PC gamer should be ashamed of him/herself.
What next? Wanted: Weapons of Fate and Terminator Salvation get PC Shooter GOTY?
Get some standards guys.

[QUOTE="CyberAltair5"]Congrats. I didn't make it past the first. I didn't even get past thirty minutes of every Halo game without being bored out of my mind. The multiplayer is at least goodHalo 2 was so bad I had to facepalm my way through the game until I stopped at the second level or w/e.

Lol this.
I loved Halo, especially the first one.
Unfortunately I hate controllers, sold my 360, and will stick to CS/TF2 until it possibly gets ported.
god, it pisses me off whenever people praise Halo as a great game, an amazing game, the best game ever etc. especially its multiplayer. How is it anything better than average? Have you guys played Quake, Doom, Battlefield, CS, Half-Life, CoD, UT...
F1_2004
I did and so did Greg Kasavin. :P
No one, aside from fanboys ever called it the best game ever. Its also very subjective. There's no such thing as a game that is truly overrated, but there's such thing as a game that is overhyped.
Well, perhaps Greg Kasavin thought so, and he is entitled to his opinion, but I played Halo and from my experience I can that, while the artwork and the level design is different, gameplay wise, its just very ordinary. chandu83Halo artwork rips off of Aliens. :P
Also, the indoor level designs really, really suck.
Halo games were one huge dissapointment, clunky gameplay (I played it both on XBox and PC) and poor story with lots of bells and whistles , quite repetitive in design (keep blowing of chinks of enemies one after another) and so on. MP too was bleh never played co-op though --- in other words a pretty mediocre shooter

The first one actually had an above average MP for the PC, but the second one was just the first with a small graphics upgrade with tiny tacked on features. But it never even came towards the level of quality that Quake 3: Arena and CS had. Not saying it was bad, but on the PC it just wasn't great,

Above average? I guess for LAN games, but the networking code was terrible. You had to aim about 10 feet in front of someone to hit them and if they were moving side to side... **** it, you just threw grenades and prayed. It's good on console, but sucks big time on PC. Not sure about the 2nd one...Halo singleplayer has always been overated imo. But the online is pretty good, especailly for consoles.
Defiantly not my favorite onlien FPS of all time, but i can appreciate why its popular.
Not the greatest FPS ever, overrated singleplayer but pretty good online for what it does.
God forbid anyone has an opinion that differs from yours, the numbers speak for itself, its on of the best franchises ever and that is a fact, no one can argue against that. As I said, the player base speaks for itself, Halo haters are just like the WoW haters, just jumping on the "its cool to hate Halo/WoW".Halo is overrated crap and anyone who likes it and is a PC gamer should be ashamed of him/herself.

narrative. pc gamers expect more than what Halo offers. it's a great console game - fans should just accept the compliment and walk away.

The key to being good was all about compensating for massive lag by knowing how far ahead to aim with the sniper pistol at various distances in order to get the kills. What a joke.Halo keeps selling hundreds of millions on release day because there's no better shooter for the Xbox. Everyone who owns an xbox has Halo, there's nothing else.

The narrative in Halo 1 and Half-Life 1 {Best FPS story ever!} are better than Half-Life 2. *Looks left and right and then raises flame shield*
