I've got two console to date the Xbox360 and the Wii. I was saving up to buy a PS3 and then I read that they are phasing out the 60GB version and replacing it with the 80GB version and charging $599 for it, which puts it out of my price range. I would buy the cheapo but whats the point because it doesn't have the features? It also makes me wonder if Sony if trying screw there costumers now because they are behind. What's the deal Sony?

The 60GB version is better than the 80GB one, and it's $100 cheaper, so hurry up and buy it while you still can a$$hole. They will most likely reduce the price of the 80GB one to $499 once the 60GB is gone.Ben3128947

That would be a PR nightmare if they lowered the price of the 80gb right after everyone went and bought the cheaper 60gb one, or spent more money on the 80gb. And try and think of a better way to convince someone to make a purchase outside of calling them an 'a$$hole'

save up or wait for a price drop. Tons of people are saying they are just doing that to get rid of the old so they can drop the price of the new (the new ones are cheaper to produce). Either way im happy because I will just upgrade the hard drive either way. I actually preffer the 60gb because of the emotion engine but I hear the emulators arent too bad. either way there isn't much difference I guess.

Doesn't have what features? The 60gb actually has the ps2's emotion engine chip for better backwards compatability, whereas the 80gb model does not. Also, it is speculated that once the 60gb's sell out, Sony will release a stand alone 80gb model that is 499. I tend to believe this, because they aren't gonna say, "after the 60gb sells out, we'll sell the 80gb for 499" b/c then people would want to wait for the 80.

Here's the scoop. By a 60gb now for $499 or an 80gb with Motorstorm for $599. Coming in the future once the 60gb units are gone is the 80gb system only for $499. The facts are 80gb drives are easier to get than the 60gb drives, but they can't just roll out 80gb units because nobody would buy the 60gb for obvious reasons. Either way you are getting more for your money than you would've just a few weeks ago so Sony is doing what is right.

A company wants to make money? OH NOES!

Really though, the 60GB hasn't gone anywhere yet, it's still the same price. Everyone was overjoyed with the news of the price drop, then Sony announce it wont be permanent, and suddenly people curse Sony, instead of going down to the shops and buying a $500 PS3, before stocks run out.

I am so tired of people claiming that a cheaper model is pointless and lacks the features. All it is is 20 more gig. Big whoop! Heck I bought the 20 gig model and love it. It was the best deal for me as I don't need wifi. People really need to get educated on the misconception that the cheaper models are some how not worth owning. Just because the 360 offers a tard pack--does not mean that every other company does.

there are perks to the 60gb and 80gb. when the 80gb hits the market, it will have the extra 20gb (not worth crying over) and Motorstorm for an extra $100. Meanwhile, the 60gb retains the Emotion Engine which allows 90 something % backwards compatability for those who want to play the older console games on the PS3. So it all comes down to what you want/prefer. The most important thing issue over the next 6 months is the available titles. I think Sony's got a handle on that as well. And lets not forget that whether you go with the 60 or 80, you're STILL getting the least expensive blu-ray player on the market! (Imagine how expensive the blu-ray burners are gonna be when they first hit!!!!!)

Yeah it sucks but the 80GB is actually a better value because it comes with an extra controller and two really good games. And I'm thinking that they will put out a regular 80GB that comes with just the console and one controller for $499. It doesn't make sense at all to only have a bundle, especially when one of the games it comes with is rated M.

the 80GB PS3 is above 80% backward compatible....so it's not that big of a deal. It's not like you are loosing that much.

m_rule

Is 'cheapo' referring to the 60GB PS3? Because the 60GB and 80GB PS3s are pretty much identical except for hard drive size...

EDIT: @Benny_Blakk - doesn't the Emotion Engine give full 100% backwards compatibility? Seeing as it's the PS2's processor and all...

you are confused.

The 80GB PS3 is ONLY FOR NORTH AMERICA. It only includes MotorStorm.

What you are talking about is the "starter" pack for EUROPE...which is the 60GB PS3, 2 controllers, and 2 games.

2. the 60GB has all the features of the 80GB...just 20 less GB.

3. once the 60GB runs out (in a month or two) the 80GB will probably go down to $499 around November for the holiday.

4. now... **** or get off the toilet...hence...buy one at $499 or stop whining.

5. no i'm not offended by a $100 price drop that has boosted sales.

Honestly Does 100 bucks make that big of a deal... I dont think so, but thats me.. just spend the extra hundred and get the system, YOU WONT REGRET IT, plus youll have 20gb more space than us folks who bought the 60gb at the 599 price....

It is simple:

If PS2/1 Backwards compatibility means a lot to you buy the 60GB model NOW for $499.

If 20GB more of space with the Exact Same Feature Set Aside From The Emotion Chip means more to you and you were going to buy Motorstorm with it anyways then buy the 80GB PS3 now for $599.

If you want the extra space and don't want Motorstorm then wait until they drop the price to $499 OR get the 60GB PS3 and go to www.newegg.com and upgrade the harddrive (without voiding the warranty) by buying a 160GB 2.5" hard drive for $100 and installing it which takes all of 5 screws to complete.

If you can get the money before the 60gig is gone I'd get it. It's $100 cheaper, and has the emotion chip inside (whic means PS2 games are hardware emulated and don't require software patches for each game like with the 360). The 80gig lacks this chip and relies on software emulation.

I would get the 60GB version because the only difference between the two is that the 80GB has a slightly larger hard drive. Also, the 60GB is superior because it has better backward compatibility due to hardware emulation. Both machines have wifi, compact flash card inputs and are pretty much identical. The 20GB difference in Hard Drive space is pretty irrelevelent too because you can buy an internal HD and just install it yourself (PS3 even comes with instructions on how to do this). $499 is pretty good price while it lasts, who knows when the 80GB bundle goes down to $499 or if they release a standalone 80GB unit.... get the 60GB while you can.

What's the deal Sony?

how about a system that fails 1/3 of the time, that sounds more like getting screwed over

i just bought a ps3 last saturday and it's awesome... i do not have a ps3 game yet, but all my ps2 and ps1 games works perfectly. im gonna rent some ps3 games and buy GTAIV when it comes out.

just ****ing buy one at best buy... there's a bonus every $100 spent you get $10. plus you have the 5 free blu ray disc. then in the future you buy a new hard drive and that's it.!!!!!!!!

Buy the 60 GB version now at $500. It is the best version to get IMHO. The 80 GB version is not worth the extra $100. Plus, the 60 GB version still has the hardware back compat for PS2 games. If you still have a library of PS2 games like me, you want the 60 GB version.

and then thers that 40 gig for 399 they were talking abouthustler_151
First of all this is just a rumor, which probably wo't hapen. Second of all, the 80 gig doesn't have any new features, its just 20 gigs more hdd and motorstorm for 100 bucks more. You can still get a 60 gig and not have to worry about any less features, you still get a lot of space and you're also getting the emotion engine, meaning nearly completely backwards compatiblity. The 80 gig is believed to not have the EE, meaning software emulation and about 72% backwards compatibility. Also, there are plenty of 60 gb in stock still, prolly last until the holidays, so really there should be nothing stoppin you from buying it if you want one.

Some very typical rants and raves in this thread :P Yet I was glad to see none/minimal brunts on the other next-gen systems, Good job keeping on track of the thread. one other minor thing though, if you want to make a serious point, check your spelling after you're done super fast rant typing. :D

Only thing I see Sony did/is doing is trying to make up for a marketing mistake of putting out a pretty useless 20GB system with the 60GB system. Now with 20GB done and gone and never to see the light of day again, the company is trying to make up some losses by dropped 60GB price. I was stoked to have checked the stores one week earlier still at $600, then last week saw $500 and was AWWWWWW (the sound of empherial light shining upon me lol) and instantly popped into my local game store and picked one up. Yes there are not alot of games YET for the PS3, but look to the future. The PS2 didn't have crap for games when it came out and look at all the fun stuff that's been pumped out for it since release. Same will happen for PS3.

Anyhoo, picked up a used copy of Resistance, me not being a 1st person shooter fan, I've found it quite entertaining and some really good jump me out of my seat moments. Oblivion is THE BOMB for a simulated MMRPG, though sooooo damn much time roaming aimlessly I forget what I'm supposed to be doing alot in game. But seriously, 80GB - 60GB, $100 difference? Do these things truly matter if you want a PS3? I will agree with all that have said "Go buy the 60GB system" if you really want one now. Trade it in for the 80GB when it comes out or do as some have mentioned just upgrade your HD to more than 80GB later and you've still saved the $100 now.

So SO SOOOO many kick ass titles comming this fall and early next year for the PS3, buy one now and play the hell out of the few Great games out now and be stoked for the titles to come. That's all...Keep gaming.

The reason why SONY is selling the 60gt model cheaper is to get rid of it, since it's more expensive to make than the 80gt model andwhen the 60gt model is off the market, SONY will lower the price of the 80 gt model. Trust me in this one. Some1 else might have said the same thing but I didn't have time to read each and every post.

If I were you I would definitely go out and buy one of the $499.00 60 gb's right away. It is the last chance for you to get one if they are stopping making them and the 80gb's don't have an emotion engine which means bad backup compatability support like the xbox 360's.

not offended...have had mine for awhile...no difference in the 80 and 60 other than the space, which you can always upgrade..just buy the 60 gig soon for 499 and upgrade the hdd if you want.
