To a certain extent, I just feel that Kojima should hold back on really long cut scenes, the final one in MGS was quite a killer.

Damn straight, I mean bob judd. Has the most awesome Stories in every single one of his games, and he has released countless of books with awesome stories.

Anybody remember that game he did with the awesomestory? Yeah thought so. What about that book he wrote that got the story of the decade award? Everybody rembers taht right? That story about that dude doing that stuff, best part was it was only a 30 minute read making sure you didn't get bored with it.

Man that Judd dude is a Genius.

Lol this is coming from a guy who's producing a game almost no one cares about.

That's like me teaching my Biology teacher about reproduction.

I just happen to like solid snake, Everybody knows that if solid snake where to be put in the new bionic commando it would only be the best game ever, Can you imagine?

"Hey snake This is the mission, Liquid snake who looks like you has taken over shadow moses and has people shooting and wants to launch nukes if he doesnt get what he wants."

"Why do I have this arm"

"Shut up snake go!"

- - - - - - - - - -

"Hey snake, Good job at following the linear path and shooting the entire foxhound squad"

"Yeah you could've told me about them"

"Yeah uhm.. on the subject of telling you about dangerous enemies, there's a giant robot thingy behind the next door"

"Cool"

- - - - - - - - - - - -

liquid : "Snake you have shot me with big guns, how did you know? Oh before I die from this heart attack. I am your twin brother and we are clones!"

dies.

"Hey colonel... I killed liquid."

"Good job snake anything interesting happen"

"Not really..the idiot had the nerve of calling me a black clown."

"Ohwell..the end"

Bionic Commando producer says Metal Gear legend needs to 'give himself only 30 minutes' for storytelling.

No WAY!! I have to disagree with this guy! wth??? This will be killing the franchise!

I smell jealousy. Don't have the means to create mind blowing cutscenes Mr. Produver? Lazy enough? Giving us 30 mins cinematics in total is LAZINESS for me and especially when it comes to MGS!

As far as I'm concerned, I crave tons of cinematics. I loved that about MGS4, I just wish the entire game was longer. Ben Judd should learn from people like Kojima. I don't care what anyone thinks, MGS pulled me into the story right from the get go with that incredible song in the menu. This is an age when interactive story telling is getting more and more popular, and MGS is one of the games that is doing that. There was something saying that Judd also took issue with Bioshock. Now me personally, I only played a little bit of that game on PC at a friend's house and will probably get it for ps3 this fall, but that story sounded incredibly interesting. I think Judd needs to really learn what people want. His games will never reach the sales figures of the MGS series, not to mention all the other story heavy games like Bioshock, Final Fantasy, etc. I hope Kojima keeps doing what he does best, cuz I'll be buying and playing his games till I can't anymore

That might be so, but it's not the point. Someone in the game industry shouldn't criticize someone of Kojima's status, especially someone who knows nothing about writing a story. And whether you like it or not, Kojima is an icon in the industry.

Just like when Cliffy B used to praise MGS, but when MGS4 started getting a lot of praise he shot it down as "passive gaming" saying games like that are on there way out and MGS4 is the type of game he doesn't want to make....More like MGS4 is the type of game he could never make if he spent the rest of his days at Epic trying.

Even though MGS4 is my least favorite in the series, it still has a lot of soul that most other games just don't have. You can see the extreme amount of care put into each and every detail. Years from now the MGS series will still be fondly remembered by many while most other games from now will just be a thing of the past. Games like Bionic Commando or Gears may be fun, but there appeal only lasts until the technology progresses and then they are forgotten. Lots of people still enjoy MGS1 even though its a PS1 game. I highly doubt that many people will be going back to enjoy Bionic Commando or Gears two console gens from now.

And you really gotta have some stones to diss Kojima in this business. ESPECIALLY in the story department. Considering Kojima is a gaming icon with a series under his belt often claimed to have the best story line in the history of gaming, this Ben Judd guy should learn his place and stay put like a good boy. In other words keep his jealousy to himself. I mean damn, imagine if some douche bag from EA came along and said Miyamoto doesn't know anything about the gaming business. That's pretty much what this is like.

It's Kojima's game and if people think the cinematics are too long - don't play the game, or skip them for instant action. Simple. This is how the game was intended to be.

As long as the cut-scenes are good and contribute to the atmosphere and overall quality of the game, which they do in this case, then i'm all for them. Like i said, it's Kojima's creation we're playing, no one elses. Would we really want him to bend over for the general public's cries for shorter cinematics if that would mean that he would have to sacrifice his vision for how he originally inteded the game to be, in favor for how others would prefer it? I want to play his game, his creation and labour of love and not the general publics.

Hope that made sense, i barely slept last night. Damn new PS3 :) lol

Makes sense. And I thought the cutscenes weren't that long in MGS4 to be honest. There were parts in the game where I needed more cutscenes longer ones but unfortunately there wasn't any.

Personally while the cutscenes are long, and you'll spend half of your amount of time playing any MGS game watching cutscenes it's totally worth it. The story is just incredible.

I have to disagree with that the game IMO had fair cutscenes that were long a lot especially in ACT 3 and ACT 5 tell the end of the final scene.

To Kojima?

Yeah...that's quite ignorant of him.

Sounds like the Bionic Commando Producer is right.

MGS4 was a frustrating mess. Between cutscenes and installs the game had the worst pace of any video game I've ever played. I would literally put my control down, and by the time gameplay finally came...I forgot I was playing a game.

Games should never provide intriguing insights into human nature and society, nor should they be a source of social criticism or catharsis. They should be an grueling test of one's ability to maneuver plastic sticks and press trigger-like buttons in a controlled and precise manner in order to shoot, stab, or stomp on large patterns of light that are displayed moving across a two-dimensional screen, whatever those light patterns may be, including but not limited to zombies, aliens, soldiers, pedestrians, and little mushroom-shaped men that walk on two feet with no legs. Never again will we be able to reach the deific level of mind-numbing repetition and thematic futility that was the Atari generation. Narrative is ruining gaming forever. God help us all.

I have to agree. While the gameplay elements of each successive MGS game have improved greatly, the thing is that Kojima's level of story-telling could best be analyzed only by performing experimental brain surgery after watching any given X-Files box set. Or did you just conveniently forget the epic **** that was MGS2? MGS4 may have finally brought it all together and closed up most of the significant plot holes in the storyline, it is in no way something a brand new person that has never played the prior MGS's is going to be able to understand what the **** is going on, and everyone that does know what's up would get really tired of all the verbal regurgitation that goes on in the cutscenes. Speaking of which, the cutscene-to-gameplay ratio is absurd in the MGS series, which really makes it stick out like a sore thumb especially since we've been doing in-game cutscenes (where the player is freely able to walk around while the story is being elaborated upon) since before MGS was released. I think that Kojima should focus on the gameplay and game mechanics, because he has proven he's really good at that, and let someone else write the script, in hopes that the next tale told actually makes some ****ing sense. Or hopefully (as the rumors suggest) join forces with Suda51 as was previously indicated, since Suda's stories usually end up being really really awesome too.

I agree with him who ever he is...When i plaid MGS4 i felt there where two different things, a good game, and a mediocre loooong animated movie. What would happen if he took out the gameplay and released it as a movie instead?... it would be disaster, no one would watch it.He should focus on the gameplay, make it "just" a great game instead. I i wan`t to be told a story there is so many artists out there that completely destroys kojima(movies, books)

This guy should just really STFU. Some devs think a paragraph of dialogue and multiple hours of mindless shooting is the way to go and expect high praise for it. Hideo Kojima makes quality games and thats solid facts. The nerve of some devs is really alarming.

Nope, those devs just believe that games need gameplay...but oh no not Kojima.

It's very rare that I have to put my controller down for long periods of time in a game. It just got frustrating. And what little gameplay it had, was great...so that just makes it worse. Cut out the crappy movie, and let us PLAY!

If Kojima had taken a different route in storytelling, he could have made the game much more accessible to a larger audience.

[QUOTE="OrwellJames"]Games should never provide intriguing insights into human nature and society, nor should they be a source of social criticism or catharsis. God help us all.AgentH

what?

Is that guy making a serious statement?

What is sounds like to me:

Small simple mind with a short attention span, tossed in with a little jealousy

Honestly, where did this guy come from anyways? Who is he? He just wants attention. Why isn't he whining about Final Fantasy? Or Oblivion? Oblivion's play time is in the months, forget hours. Final Fantasy game hours keep going up with each release. I think this nobody needs to shut up and stop thinking he can play with the big boys. He should just go back to his little "Bionic Commando".

One thing about Metal Gear people don't seem to understand is that it's an interactive story, an experience. Not just a game. I can see if the cutscense are long with NO story at all. But there is, and a huge one at that with years of character growth.

I agree with Denji.

The game is meant to tell a story and a rather deep one at that. Were there other ways he could of told the story? Sure, but Kojima picked they way he wanted to since it was his game. It was great to play a game heavy with story rather than the little bit of story mixed in with shooting.

Certainly shouldnt be telling a fellow game dev who has been around for quite some time as Kojima has what to do. I do wish though that MGS4 had more actual gameplay in it than it did cutscenes.
