Oh god. This is karma coming to bite me in the ass.

So I decided that I wanted to get a system with HD gaming/movies and had to choose between the Xbox360 and the PS3.

I opted for the PS3 as the Xbox360 was riddled with overheating/disc reading/scratching problems and the rumors of the new Zephyr box really turned me off. (Yes, it's a silly excuse. But if I shell out the dough, I want the best system that company has to offer for that particular generation)

So I got the PS3. Setup was a breeze. Gaming was fantastic (only have the Marvel game thus far). Bluray DVD playback with the HDMI cable was PHENOMENAL!

The one blip was that halfway through "The Departed", my PS3 froze for 5 seconds. It was completely unresponsive to any controller button mashing. After those 5 seconds though, I hit start and it was fine again.

I figured one blip was no small deal.

But when I tried finishing the movie today, it happened 5 times! All presenting with the same problem. Freezing with no response for 5 seconds. Hit start and then everything is fine again.

My question to all of you is this:

1) Is this a hardware problem? Do I need to return my PS3 for one that isn't faulty?

2) Is this a software problem? Is this just a growing pain that I have to live with until it's fixed by the next system update? (I've heard rumors that stated early patches of the PS3 firmware didn't really have smooth Bluray playback and it has been improved greatly since the release of the system)

Thanks so much for the help!

I've contacted Sony about this but I figure this is another great source of information.

one quick fix to this problem that someone else stated on another board was to disable internet while watching blu-ray movies. They claim it stops the freezing. Does this just happen with blu-ray movies or with everything?

It just happens with the blu-ray movie. Gameplay is fine (and quite breathtaking :) ) I'll definitely try the disabling of the wifi. Hopefully that will work!

Hmm...I'll check to see if there are scratches. I think I might try a plain ole regular DVD disc as well. That could very well be the problem!

I'm still awaiting the official email reply from Sony but I did get the chance to give them a call.

I was told that they were unable to help me if I'm not physically at my machine (I'm at work right now)

When I asked about the disabling of the WiFi, the phone tech told me it was probably coincidental and said that the protocol he has is to tweak certain settings in the Bluray menu.

I guess I'll go back home and call again when I have access to my PS3 and see if I can resolve the problem then.

Anyone else with a similar experience with Sony's phone support?

Talk about jumping to conclusions. I doubt a little bug such as this will be the reason why the PS3 turns into a $600 paperweight. If blu-ray goes down the toilet, or if devs jump ship completely, then I'd say you have a point. But a little skipping that can be fixed with firmware is no big deal.

I hope it's a firmware issue. I'm thinking it is one because there have been complaints that people's Bluray playback were fine. But after the update to 1.50 and 1.51, the freezing issues began. What I hope it ISN'T is an actual hardware problem. I normally purchase my electronics from BestBuy as they tend to have great customer service. Due to lack of availability in my area (yes, it is a hot item!), I had to go over to the local Toys R Us. Besides being twice as old as the next oldest customer, I'm sensing their customer support isn't the greatest as they don't deal mostly with electronics. Arranging a return would be a painful experience!

I have update 1.51 and I just watched The Departed last night. Not even a single hiccup. I'm not quite sure what may be causing this. My friend just bought a PS3 2 weeks ago and his did the freeze 4 times through Syriana. I went to his house and brought some of my BD movies. What I noticed is that he had the system in an ent. center with the glass door closed. We left it open, watched 2 movies, and not a single freeze. I think this may be a heat issue, so if you have an ent. center, make sure the unit gets good ventilation. Mine sits on an open rack, so I have never had any heat issues.

Happens regularly, at least once everyother DVD or BluRay. 3-5 second read error, the image freezes then comes back after 3-5 seconds of pause. It's not just BluRay it happens on DVDs as well, but never happened on any games. Lits of movies that its happened on Black Rain BD - happened second time I watched it Hollywoodland DVD Pearl Harbor BD The Convenant BD etc etc. The PS3's BluRay drive has problems.

if the games work fine, then its obviously not the bluray drive, since the games are blu-ray also, troubleshooting 101. its either a firmware problem depending how they do the video playback, i will admit im not real familiar with how they do that portion, so i dont know if its done with a seperate section of the unit. or you could have some other problems. call sony and speak with them

That's actually a great point. I haven't had any problems with gameplay so it probably isn't the bluray drive!! I think that perhaps it is the firmware that's creating network reconnection problems during bluray playback (this is what I found from the Sony support forums) The Sony tech I spoke to today said that it had something to do with the settings menu under the XMB for Bluray playback. Some discs need the settings tweaked he said. I told him that while he could suggest some settings for me, I can't really sit down with him and watch the Departed and keep him on the phone the whole time. The freezing occurs at random places. Perhaps they will address this in their next firmware upgrade. And how many people are having this problem? These is a MASSIVE thread over at the Sony Forums for PS3. 22 pages of posts and counting!!

You have to call Sony Customer Support and explain the problem to them

That's really your only course of action..but in my experience they are quite helpful and willing to sort out your problem if you're persistent.

It's denial I think a lot of ppl are having this issue but no one wants to talk about it, because it's so minute. It happens randomly and sometimes it doesn't happen at all. I was able to watch Black Rain twice in a row(director commentating) without it happening once. So it's really a small issue but bothersome.

The reason this doesn't happen in games is because games do not require constant ROM drive reading, games are cached in HDD and only require loading at specific moments. While DVDs and BluRay require constant drive access as only a few seconds of the data is cahed in ram. I think this issue is BDROM drive related and has nothing to do with the firmware.

but it would still have to read them initially to cache them into the drive right? i dont know the ps3 that well as of yet, but sooner or later it has to get the info from the drive. so for it to be the drive, you would still get those glitches, the cache couldnt really clean them up i wouldnt think. most people have stated their pauses are in the same spot most of the time, doesnt sound like a drive problem. but im not an expert on it, so i would say to call sony

Yup...a rather disappointing reply: "Thank you for writing us. We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced. The most effective way for us to assist you is by speaking with you directly. Please call our Consumer Services Department at (800) 345-7669. Our representatives are available to assist you, Monday through Saturday 6:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., and Sunday 7:00 a.m. - 6:30 p.m., Pacific Standard Time." I figured I'd call them this weekend when I get the time to wait and have them walk me through every single diagnostic test they can think of. I also googled around the Internet and searched Sony's own PS3 boards. It does seem like it's a problem that afflicts lots of people so I believe it's a firmware problem and not a massive hardware problem. I'm also going to try disabling my wireless network connection to see if that helps. (It's a temporary fix that many have been suggesting)

As a side note, I tried calling them earlier this week and they denied any problems with the firmware. They insisted it had something to do with the setup of the Bluray settings on the XMB so I'll let them walk me through all that this weekend. I'm pretty sure that's not going to resolve anything because I can't predict when the crashes occur. Of course, if the Sony customer support people are willing to sit through a viewing of The Departed with me while waiting for crashes, I'll watch the movie again ;)

That may be the answer to his problem right there. No, I do not have a blu ray player or a PS3, but still....first things first. Did you try to play any other movies to see if the same thing happened? It may just be the disk, my friend, and NOT your PS3.

I'll definitely try that this weekend as well. Thus far, I've only played The Departed and judging from the reviews online, lots of problems have been occuring with that particular disc. I checked the disc for smudges and scratches and it was clean. I've rented another Bluray movie from Netflix to try and I have a large collection of older, regular DVDs which I'll pop in too. And again, gameplay is not affected at all by this problem (been playing Marvel with no problems) so it leads me to think that firmware and not hardware is the culprit.

Gimme a break, do you think all these people who are having this problem all bought defective BluRays, thats a lot of defective BluRay films. As I said before this doesn't just happen on BluRay films it also happens on DVDs. Now don't tell me my DVDs are also defective what a coincidence. So Black Rain, The Conevnant, Hollywoodland, The Departed are all defective, not to mention half a dozen DVDs that I've tried. The answer is never that simple. Trust me the answer ain't The Departed I don't even have The Departed and I'm having this problem.

Look, pal....it was just a suggestion. Sometimes it is just the disk and nothing more, I was merely trying to help, ok? I cannot tell you how many times that I have put a bad DVD in, and just when I thought that it might be my player lemoning out, I tried a few other flicks and there were no problems, leaving the disk to blame.

Anyway, maybe the blu-ray player is faulty, who knows? I was just offering a suggestion....nothing more.

Look if you don't have PS3 and haven't had the problem then you don't know what your talking about. Please your help is just making us feel stupid. Do you think nobody tried different films. P.S My DVD collection is prestine, they all work perfectly in my Phillips DVD player. Only when I play them on my PS3 do they start freezing. So there it's not the disk. Move on.

Ladies ladies! C'mon now...we can all get along! Thanks ironcreed for the potential solution. I'll certainly try it but I think pimperjones might be right as well. This does seem to be a far-reaching problem and is most likely due to more than just faulty discs. Hopefully, Sony releases a solution soon. I can see the frustration is mounting to boiling point levels ;)

Because I wrote in in page 2

Now if you had bothered to read the entire thread you would have noticed that. Now you come on and say gee whizz maybe its the disk, after I specifically mentioned that I tried multiple disks including DVDs. Don't you think thats being a little condescending. It's bad enough that the issue exists we don't need people giving useless suggestions. Next time read the thread before commenting please.

Has anyone tried the temp fix of disabling their wifi connection? Just curious to see if it actually does work as I don't have physical access to my PS3 for a couple more days (ugh...away rotation at hospital) Also wanted to know if anyone just recently experienced these errors? For instance, I bought my box and was asked to immediately upgrade to the newest firmware (1.51) Did anyone use the PS3 while it had an earlier version of firmware (1.3) and did you experience these problems then? It seems this problem started arising after the update to new firmware (judging by Googling the topic...not personal experience!)

I guess it might be a futile attempt to find someone with a stand alone Blu-Ray player on these boards but you might try some other High-Def movie boards. I'd say if people are having the same problem watching the Departed on a stand alone player this it probably has something to do with the disc. If stand alone Blu-Ray players are just fine when watching "The Departed" it's probably a PS3 specific problem. Just another thought to help narrow down the possibilities. Best of luck.

Nothing wrong with The Departed there are tons of reviews on the film on BluRay all over the net, all played on Samsung BD players not a single freezing complaint.
