there is not gonna be a new gen for atleast 3 years so if u wanna wait that long for a ps4 be my guest but sony isnt releasing a ps4 next year garenteed
Just get the slim theres no point in missing out on all this gen grreat games especially if you dont have a Xbox or gaming PC.
Edit: i didnt see you xbox gamer tag get the slim and watch your blu-ray there also some great PS3 exclusives which look better the the xbox lineup IMO

For now the next generation will be the add on motion technology coming out next year. Won't see a new playstation for a very long time..... I would get on board with the new ps3 slim price tag.

Do you like the PS3's existing game library and their upcoming exclusive franchises? If so, it might be a good investment.
Buying at the beginning is always risky, b/c prices drop the fastest after the debut. But I think we're reaching the middle stage of the console's lifespan right now, where prices will change very minimally in the next few years. In a year's time, the PS3 will drop to maybe $250 if we're lucky, whereas the previous price drops have been more substantial $100 cuts. And it's hard to see the console dropping to $199 until 2-3 years down the line.
If you only want Blu-ray movies, just get a Blu-ray player. You can pick them up for $150 now.
If you just want a blu-ray player just buy one, I think there are cheaper ones than the PS3 now. But the PS3 also has good games so in terms of gaming it's great and don't expect a PS4 until 2012 or 2013 the systems now were very expensive materials and it'll take more time for companies to gain their money off the hardware and software titles too.
Well if you are extremely patient then yes. You see sony developes systems on a 10 year span. So the ps3 came out in 2006 that means you must wait until 2016! I'm getting the ps3 slim for sure. So your going to have to wait another 6-8 years for sony to make a new system. I hope this helped a lot add me!
Buy it now, the Ps4 comes out in 2012, so either you can wait until then and play nothing and then die, or you can enjoy your last three years of gaming (kidding of course).
What a frickin idiot. 2012 is optimistic for next console, thats just guesswork, no eivdence. Considering the cost and time it's taking to make the most of this gen you could be waiting another 7 years for a next gen update. Christ, by then home gaming may just be cloud computing over a physical console.

Well good luck with that one. Hey the next gen consoles might be all download so thus no Blu-ray player. Just buy a Blu-ray player for less than $200.
The next gen will NOT be all download. Not with the inadequate speeds available in most countries (which isn't going to improve much in only 3-5 years). And certainly not with the download caps which many service providers are implementing now.
