Umm. Why wouldn't you buy blu-rays? I buy blu-rays all the time. By far the best quality way to watch most films @1080p. Can't wait until 4K comes out.
I don't use my PS3 to watch them anymore though. I went to a standalone player a few months after getting a PS3.
Never used PS3 to play music either. But I don't see plugging in a phone as much of a replacement to anything. On the rare occasion I listen to music at home I usually pop in a CD (yes I still have all my CD's) into my blu-ray player. I have a half decent amp and speakers for my modest little "home theater", so using an adapter to connect my iphone to that setup would be a joke. Phone is only useful for portability, not so much for quality.
Not really for music since I have CDs and an iPod for that, but I do have music on my PS3 from the Starhawk disc and I think I needed it to make a custom soundtrack in a game for a trophy.
Though, I do use it a lot for blu-ray and DVDs and I don't see why you wouldn't unless you already have a dedicated player for them.
Granted, I don't use it for the internet browser since it's kind of useless and I don't use Playstation Home.
well i try to avoid digital music (nothing but vinyl for me), but i use it for blu ray fairly often.
Music never. Watch Blu ray movies yes but not very many. I own only 6 blu-Ray movies. Back when the PS3 first launched I wanted to try out Blu Ray movie feature "Just because".
99% I play videogames on PS3.
i use it for everything, i mean everything, movies, blu ray, music, search the web, anything it lets meJoKeR_421Me too, but I put everything on hold since the Olympics are on. :D
I bought fight club, on blu ray(totally worth it), Thursday, and Serenity sometime last last week. Collection at about 25 now, and growing.
I have music on my ps3, but because not many games allow playback during games, I rarely get a chance to use it. It's also a good thing you didn't buy it on impulse because it would show you likely don't do your research. Some blu rays simply aren't worth it, be the largely noticeable lack of an upgrade, or a total massacre to the picture of what could be considered an otherwise great film.
In that regard, you are severely cutting yourself off from great entertainment assuming you are able to take advantage of it with a good tv, and surround sound setup. Picture quality is one thing, but the audio is just....heavenly.
Every PS3 owners buys blurays. Think about it, aren't all ps3 games on bluray lol? I know what you mean though. I do watch blu ray movies on my ps3, I actually use the ps3 for everything.
Honestly. Really. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to this thread. Don't lie to this forum. Don't lie to yourself. When was the last time you bought a blu-ray? Have you ever used your PS3 for music playback? Maybe you all are different from me and my friends, but I can safely say that I have never used my PS3 for either of those things. I almost bought a blu-ray for 5 bucks at Fry's the other day. Just to say I did it. But I'm not much of an impulse buyer. And music? I tried it once, but couldn't figure out any practical use for it as far as my lifestyle goes. If I want music in the house, I plug my phone into my speakers. A lot faster and easier. What about you guys?getsmizacked
yes i do i have mine plugged thro my amp... and watch films and stream tunes from my pc...i also have a few albums saved on it as well...
why wouldn't you use all the features?
i use crackle youtube & facebook on psn
i did click unlimited music once
other then that i never put in a blu - ray movie ... for the simple fact i don't own one - i can just watch movies right on my netbook for free online

Do you know that you don't necessarily have to buy blu-ray movies? People can rent blu-ray movies for measly $1.50 from red box.... It is worth to pay 30 cents more over dvd rental especially if it a special effects movie. It is crazy how you never even tried blu-ray and the year is 2012.

You must be very young to make assumptions that PS3 as a console is only being used for the gaming purposes or that no one is using it for outstanding Blu-ray player which I personally use at least 3-4 times a week with my wife. I have little over 40 Blu-ray movies and almost 45 PS3 games since PS3 came out.
I did my share of trade-ins as well since specific games I don't play anymore. I also use it for Netflix and sometimes quick web-browser which I have my USB keyboard connected to when our Laptop is being used. It's not perfect but it works.
The only lie being told here is yours ignorance to PS3 gamers and community. ;)
I used to store almost all of my music on my PS3 and use it for audio playback all the time up until a year ago when I got an ipod and a decent speaker set. As for blu-rays? I have a pretty big collection and watch flicks on it all the time. Currently saving for the Indiana Jones blu-rays as I type this, as a matter of fact.
I don't use my PS3 for anything but playing games. I don't bother with blu-rays at all, not only because they are more expensive, but because my standard DVD player and DVDs are fine without HD.
How ironic is it that i happen to be watching a Blu-Ray on my PS3 right now as im typing this, i have dual moniters for my PC and i have PS3 hooked up to one of them
Woah woah woah chill guys. Here's why at first I couldn't relate to you all. Music: For what? My computer is right next to my PS3, is always on, and is much faster than the XMB interface for weaving through my THOUSANDS of songs. Plus, I save PS3 hard drive space. Blu-rays: I watch them on my computer once again. Yeah they're pretty great picture wise. I don't know too much about surround sound setups. I'm still rocking a 2.1 system. Anyone wanna link me to some decent surround sound setups for under 80 bucks? Web browsing: My smartphone's browser kills the PS3's. And my computer already has a decently large monitor setup to it, so I do most of my web browsing on there. Your PS3 and computer are RIGHT next to each other attached to two separate screens. Which do you choose for your web browsing, music, and blu-rays, and WHY? That's all I want to know.getsmizacked
Music? I have some music on my ps3 and I listen to them once in a while. Do you know that some games will actually let you play the game and listen to your ps3 music? You could also browse the internet and listen to your mp3s as well. And if someone has a home theater, it is nice to listen to your mp3s through there.
Blu-ray? You may be happy watching blu-ray movies on a small computer screen with weak speakers. I prefer to watch AND LISTEN to blu-ray movies on a 46" lcd and my home theater system while laying on comfy couch. Big difference. One thing that the playstation 3 can do that lot of blu-ray players can't is the ability to stream 5.1 audio from internet streaming sites like vudu and netflix. If most blu-ray players can't stream 5.1 audio, I don't think your computer can. I can't imagine watching any movie on my computer small screen and chair. I still think it is crazy how people can actually watch 2 hours of a movie on their 3" screen smart phone. It boggles my mind but everyone has their preferences.
Not everyone has their computer screen right next to their large tv screen especially in living room.... I think that is very odd placement but that is your choice.
My blu-ray collection has skyrocketed since getting my PS3 and I have my PS3 hooked into my home theater system so of course I watch a ton of blu-rays on it.
Seeing as there isn't anything worth watching and all my music is on my iPod...
Nope I do not use my PS3 for music/blu-ray.:D

That's all I want to know.getsmizackedMy computer isn't next to my PS3 since I have my computer downstairs and I have my PS3 upstairs. As for Blu Rays I own about 12 and that's only because I got them cheap for about £1 since most were ex rental copies.
As for music I have some on my PS3 for some of the games that support custom soundtracks. I also use Vidzone on my PS3 for Music Videos. Some people use it for BBC iPlayer, BBC Sport, ITV Player or 4 on Demand.
If I can't be bothered to turn my computer on I'll use the PS3 web browser.

The answer to your question is my PS3 and computer are not sitting right next to each other. My PS3 is hooked up to a 55" screen, where I also have my blu-ray player, cable box, AV receiver, speakers, etc
My computer is a laptop with a 15.6" screen and usually sits at a desk that is not in the same room as the TV. (sometimes I do plug my laptop into the TV just so I can play some steam games on the TV with a controller, but that's really about it)
You can't get a decent surround setup for under $80. Hell you can't even get a decent STEREO setup for under $80. However you don't have to spend a huge amount. You can probably get a decent 100W/channel receiver for $150-200. Just look at a the most basic Pioneer or Yamaha branded amp and you are probably good. Instead of going straight for the surround sound start out with just pair of basic floorstanding speakers (or something like 6" JBL bookshelf speakers). It's most important to get a decent pair of front speakers. I'll take a set of really nice stereo speakers over a crappy surround sound "home theater in a box" setupany day. Even that modest stereo setup and bookshelf speakers would probably blow you away when listening to a real CD, especially compared to what you hear when playing MP3's off a phone via a 2.1 system. You can always add another pair of speakers and center channel later to make it surround sound. I would recommend something like 6" JBL bookshelf speakers to start out with. You should easily be able to find a pair for under $200 if not $150. So for the amp and speakers you are talking around $300, but you can probably get that even lower if you really shop for it.
I bought a program online from Iskysoft that burns any video or audio format, so yeah, I have burned the DVDs that I watch over and over to my PS3 HD in DIVX format (seems to be the smallest file size of all the PS3 supported ones without sacrificing any quality) but I have an ipod like most people so the audio portion is not for me, yet anyway.

Since we're discussing blu-ray here, I just have a quick question. Is there any way to make it so it doesn't play in surround sound? I don't have surround sound but I do have two really good speakers I use but it sounds kind of weird with the way the blu-rays I've watched. The special effects are always loud and good sounding but the dialogue is often a lot quiter, making it sometimes annoying to have the effects so much louder. Other than that, I have to agree with everyone else that the picture quality for films actually shot in HD is fantastic.
