Weak graphics? Show me any PS3/360/wii game that looks better?(remember t came a year from uncharted 2)[QUOTE="POPEYE1716"]
How has it evolved? I only paid $20 for the game. I don't care how much it costed me, I care about how worthy it is to be a sequel of MGS3.

I haven't beaten the game yet. I'm only about 6 hours in. I've played, loved, and beaten MGS 1, 2, and 3. But playing Metal Gear Solid 4, I'm wondering how this game got a 10. The gameplay hasn't evolved since MGS2 and the game itself even seems to have less mechanics than Metal Gear Solid 3. And this game is filled with dozens of stupid little tidbits that make me cringe. For example, when Otacon shows up in that "cutesy" 1-ft tall Mk2 robot in the beginning, he pulls out a bunch of weapons and gear out of thin air. Couldn't they have at least tried? The graphics are pretty weak too. The framerate is very shaky and the textures on the environment are disgustingly low resolution. How did this game win best graphics of the year?
Does the game get much better towards the end? I'm having fun but it's nothing special so far.KHAndAnime
Act 4 is amazing, I haven't played Act 5 yet as I'm waiting for a rainy day. ( its looooooooong )I haven't beaten the game yet. I'm only about 6 hours in. I dunno. Gamer Informer, GamePro, GameSpot, IGN, and the Official PlayStation Magazine gave it a perfect 10 along with other review sites...maybe because they know what they are talking about and the game deserved it? I'd say a few of those are pretty credible sources wouldn't you?
How about being almost 100% glitch free along with no frame cuts or slowdown? Maybe having a diverse gameplay to appeal to shooters and sneakers without sacrificing the feel of playing the game the wrong way. Could be the graphics were better than anything anyone has ever seen on any game of all time. Kojima has been labeled a pretty darn good plot maker andMGS4ties up all the games into one.Dunno.
Whatever it is, the fact that its 2010 and you are still talking about its reputation just goes to show how much it deserves a 10. Sure the game has fanboys. Guess what, good games have fans. Great games have a lot of them. MGS4 probably has the biggest group of fanboys on the PS3 and its because its one of the best on the PS3 and its gonna stay that way too. Don't think so? Well its 2010 and you bought it and you're pretty late jumping on the "omg its overhyped" banwagon.
...Btw I think its funny you pick on MGS4 for "pulling things out of the air" when every single MGS has done the same thing. If you don't see how the game has evolved and the graphics are weak (takes guts to call MGS4 graphics weak pal)then you obviously havn't played any MGS and need to polish your glasses.
it didn't deserve a 10. the loading between chapters should've been a deduction to its score. other games get marked down for being short but this game didnt... MeowmixxviI dont understand why kojima didnt give us the option to install all chapters, if your going to make it 5gb may as well let some of us go the whole hog.

I know it's personal opinion and all. But seriously? I may not live in the same dimension you do, but every Metal Gear Solid release has evolved it's gameplay where I live.
Umm I played MGS 4 through to the end, but it is far from the best game I've ever played. It is by no means anywhere near "perfect". I'd give the game at best a 9 out of 10. If you ask me MGS 4 is more like a 8.5 and I'll explain why.
*Warning Spoilers!*
1) It's repititive.
You fight the same generic PMC goons all the time. All of which are physically the same and scream exactly the same way when they die. Seriously everyone in the game always screams "AAAGGGGHHH!!!" when they die. They couldn't bother to make a few different cries? Even the older MGS games had different death cries.
There's also the FROGS, which you apparently have to murder in untold numbers. Where did all these identical female soldiers come from anyways? There's also the GECKO too. How the heck are there more GECKO than Tanks? It's like 2014 and you want me to believe Metal Gear Cows will rule the battlefield? Okay...
Anyways essentially you kill PMC guys, kill some FROGS, some GECKO, help the Rebels, and defeat the boss.
2) Short linear levels.
This really made me sad. I expected with the advent of MGS 4 on the PS3 you'd finally get to explore more open environments. Nope, basically you just go down a set path and either kill or sneak your way past the enemy. I never ever once felt like I was in a city or the jungle, because there's really only one way to go. I had really hoped for something like actually being able to choose how you would get to sneak through an entire city or jungle, not just one or two paths.
The absolute worst thing however is in some locations enemies will just keep respawning infinitely. Seriously I got on a mortar once and kept killing enemies wondering when I'd finally have killed them all. After nearly 15 minutes they were still coming. What the hell is this? Not even CoD 4 had unlimited enemy spawns. Why do they even give you things like mortars if you can't kill off the enemies? It's dumb game design period.
3) Poor AI.
The AI in the older MGS games were pretty good for its time. Actually the AI is still pretty smart, the only real complaint is they are all very near-sighted. However considering the old games camera perspective it made sense. In MGS 4 however the AI is apparently blind and stupid. You're telling me they can't see a guy lying in the middle of the street, just because of some fancy camo? Right... Nevermind the fact you have no camo for your head when you start the game.
4) Long Cut-Scenes + Long Load Times
What turned me most off from the game were the cut-scenes. You spend more time watching the game, then you doing playing it. If they're going to do that why not just make a 12 hour long movie? I play video games to play them, not watch them. Sure the old MGS games had some long cut-scenes, but MGS 4 takes it too far. A casual gamer with only an hour or two to play a day would be lucky to get through some parts of the game.
Sure the old MGS games were a bit heavy with the Codec at time, and MGS 4 tried to correct that. Not sure why they even bothered with it really since the game is all explained via cut-scenes.
Also the load times for each act were really long. Look I get levels take some time to load, but waiting at a screen for 2 minutes is just not fun.
5) Poor Interaction
While the shooting mechanics were much improved in MGS 4, basically all the other controls became wack. Using the Triangle button to perform every action just slows down the game and made using cover frustrating. In the old MGS games getting into cover is easy just walk up to the wall. I also liked how you could peak around and over cover. Doing so in MGS 4 always seemed like a chore.
In essence I really felt the game became too much of a third person shooter, and less of the old tactical stealth game the series is known for.
6) Story/Plotholes
The Story in MGS 4 was good, but really doesn't make any sense. I mean what was the point of Ocelot pretending to be Liquid? Why didn't everyone just simply team up and destroy the Patroits AI? Did they really need to create a whole false conflict? I guess I was baffled by the fact how in MGS 4 everything was essentially explained to you by Big Boss at the very end. That and how apparently everyone has nanomachines in them.
Like why did Eva kill herself? Why didn't Ocelot just upload GW with the virus if he already controlled the ship? Also how are the remains of Big Boss actually Solidus? Didn't Solidus lose his left eye? Didn't the remains still have a left eye?
Still the worst thing is the whole Patroits AI business. How exactly do a few super computers control the world? I mean how does that work? It doesn't because the Patroit AI would still need people to actually physically enforce their will, and who in their right mind is going to take orders from a computer?
Sadly I have to say MGS 2 and MGS 4 both suffer from this stupid story element. A secret organization controlling events is one thing, but a bunch of computers doing it? Yeah that's just not really possible no matter how you spin it. I think it's for this reason MGS: The Twin Snakes/MGS 1 will always be my favorite game of the series. Because even though it was fictional it still had a fairly convincing story. The problem I guess with MGS 2 and MGS 4 for me is they try to take it too far, and it just ends up seeming all very absurd.
Look MGS 4 is a good game. It is one of the best looking games out there. It has some cool moments, lots of weapons, and interesting characters. But it is not the greatest game I've ever played. GTA IV on the other hand is easily one of the greatest games I've had the chance to play. It actually has a deep story for what you would expect to be a shallow game. Very few games present you with moral choices like GTA IV. Not only that but it'll take you a good 50 hours to play thru, which is practically unheard of these day with most games taking 12 hours at best. Not only that, but GTA IV manages to have created what really does seem like an actual city. And if all else fails it's just plain fun to drive around like a maniac with cops chasing after you. GTA IV earns its 10 out of 10, MGS 4 on the other hand just seems more like all hype to me.
lol . People asking why MGS 4 got a 10. LOLlllll First things first the guys who dont get it . Face it. you arent good at judging games so leave the analysis part and move on in life.
Since you guys cant do much in the gaming score analysis world go and do something else. Like you can be a professional Carpenter Or getting a job as a Nurse or something. Its a sure shot 10 out of 10. Are you living under a rock or what ? i dont know how anyone can ask such a lame question.

agreed it was clearly a fans nostalgia score or something. Like you said games games have received points of for loading and length and MGS4 fails at both imo. In my book its a 9. Great game but way too short for my liking but still a great game. I also though the boss battles were a little weak this time around and the game was overall way to easy. There are so many guns that you could really just shoot your way through the whole thing.

Well, these type of conflicts do exist (groups funding both sides). That was all the Patriots AI. What I was to understand, Ocelot was on the target list and he wanted to be a ghost in the system. Not "officially exist", even to The Patriots. He exploited the system. The war wasn't "all him". He was just "riding the rocket" of what was already in place. He wanted to break The Patriots' grip over society for his own purposes.
Like why did Eva kill herself? Why didn't Ocelot just upload GW with the virus if he already controlled the ship? Also how are the remains of Big Boss actually Solidus? Didn't Solidus lose his left eye? Didn't the remains still have a left eye?
Eva didn't kill herself. Foxdie killed her. Like I've said above, Ocelot wanted it for himself. JD had supreme control. So the most logical thing, get rid of JD. That's what he was trying to do with REX's rail gun. I don't remember the "eye" at the moment. But the body in the van was Solidus.
Still the worst thing is the whole Patroits AI business. How exactly do a few super computers control the world? I mean how does that work? It doesn't because the Patroit AI would still need people to actually physically enforce their will, and who in their right mind is going to take orders from a computer?
You'd be surprised. If people never actually knew, it would sail by. How could you be sure some levels of government isn't run by some AI right now? You can't. That's obvious. They were AIs capable of free thinking. They were self aware. The only people that had access above the AI were the human Patriots. Zero wanted to pass his ideals to something that would never die and constantly run 24/7 365 without fail. The AIs obviously knew who they were in MGS2. They've proven that a great deal. Especially giving orders to high officials, plotting against people and creating multiple conspiracies. I'd say, those AIs are well capable.
Sadly I have to say MGS 2 and MGS 4 both suffer from this stupid story element. A secret organization controlling events is one thing, but a bunch of computers doing it? Just because you can't wrap your brain around it, doesn't mean it isn't possible. There's no such thing as "because I don't believe it, it doesn't exist" because technically, the world doesn't revolve around that one person. There are many people that know things that you wouldn't know or could possibly imagine. That is the point of "learning".
Look MGS 4 is a good game. It is one of the best looking games out there. It has some cool moments, lots of weapons, and interesting characters. But it is not the greatest game I've ever played. Hey, what kind of gamers would we all be if we all liked the same thing? Gaming would be boring in that case.

The next thing this guy's gonna say is,"Mario is a REAL FAT PLUMBER...How the hell can he jump so HIGH???....Sonic is a HEDGEHOG and he's BLUE...hedgehogs arent BLUE....and Hedgehogs dont run that fast....and in MW2 Multiplayer how can a guy come back to life and shoot u if u have killed him before.....ths just so UNREALISTIC!!!!"
Sure does. Much better if I say so myself. You'd be the first I've heard to think otherwise, and since I don't even know you, I think I'll just assume you need some thick glasses or something. And even if MGS4 looked better than UC, MGS4 wasn't better looking than Warhead, or any other choice PC Titles release that year. You have the right to your own opinion, you do not have the right to BE right. I'd be the second you've heard to think otherwise, and I'm already wearing thick glasses. By the fact that you see "framerate issues" in a game well known to run at a rock solid silky smooth framerate, I'd say you're the one with the minority view here, not us. Looking forward to your next thread where you let us know you don't like a popular game and make up things about it to criticize to look "different and edgy" in front of strangers on the internet, what will that be? FF13? God of War 3?[QUOTE="Keir21"]Uncharted 1 does not look better than MGS4....KHAndAnime
Seeing the amount of "Why MGS4 got a 10/10" makes me think that GS should make a seperate forum for all thos people who STILL keep talking (and hating) on MG4 till this very day even after over a year.
I stopped reading at gameplay has not evolved
I know..I don't understand some people. How far can the gameplay evolve and in fact the gameplay involved quite a bit with MGS4. Just your typical haters I guess. Wanting the world and Jesus too for $60. MGS4 is unlike any other...PERIOD! a must own if you rhave a PS3 and it so deserevs 10 no game comes close to it yet[QUOTE="POPEYE1716"]This. And then I looked at OP's profile and saw he gave Uncharted 2 a 10 and Oblivion a 1. I'm not even going to bother, move along.I stopped reading at gameplay has not evolved

I don't score to give an actual rating, I score to weight the average review up or down. Anyways, I beat Metal Gear Solid 4 just now and now I can give more of a review rather than a first impression. Act 1 was pretty boring for me and I almost quit because it nearly became unbearable. But as soon as I hit Act 2, the game turned around immensely. The world itself opened up and the environment was no longer drab. I beat the game in about 2 sittings. The mission briefings were enjoyable and well done.
The gameplay was pretty good, but as I said earlier in the thread, it didn't evolve, it just changed. You can instantly spot the poser fanboys in this thread because if they played any of the earlier MGS games, they'd acknowledge the fact the game has less moves, less interaction with the environment, and overall less gameplay than MGS3/MGS2. You can no longer kill wild life and eat it. You can no longer disable enemy limbs and radio equipment. No more medical management. It's now just straight up shooting (aim for the head), and crawling.
Hideo's story telling also lost its touch. I lost count of how many times he over emphasizes dramatic moments (some of which aren't even all that dramatic once you realize that these characters can all lose limbs, grow them back and take infinite amounts of bullets) with the same overbearing music. It's still good, but it's slightly below MGS2 / MGS3, probably due to the pretentiousness of the whole story. Along with it are any cringe-worthy moments (particularly with Sunny, Drebin, and the ending of Act 5). Some cutscenes restate information too often (war economy, nanomachines, etc.). The lectures were unnecessary too - 90% of the people won't care. Even I (a big fan of the series) found myself bored to tears by the lengthy one-sided "dialogue". It's almost as if Snake had the least dialogue in the game. Whenever he did speak, it often was just "War economy?", "What do you mean?", "Nanomachines?", "Hmmmm", "Ughhhh", "Ehhh", and other questioning/moaning.
Graphically, the game is solid. The beautiful cutscenes balance out the not-so-beautiful gameplay. It's rare I see games basque in their low framerate. After awhile, you just get used to the constant dips. Lots of ugly textures too. Some of the environment (particularly in the Middle East) sticks out like a sore thumb, with the muddy low resolution textures. The use of physics in the game was bad ass. Nearly all objects that seem like they should be destroyable were destroyable. The physics that accompanied your body when you got hit by explosions was a VERY nice touch. It's very satisfying to see your body fly against a wall and hear a large "SMACK". The music wasn't really up to mark either. "Old Snake" was decent, but whenever I had the opportunity to listen to the old music through the game's Ipod, it was a "Hell yes" moment. The re-use of old music was great. Especially the Snake Eater theme. Back when I first played Snake Eater, I really cringed at the music, but I have to admit, it's amazing, and certainly was a step up above MGS4's music. I was also sad how they never worked in the MGS2 theme, which is the series best piece of music. I suppose it has something to do with the fact that the music was plagiarized by an old Russian composer or something like that.
What really made this game for me were the boss battles. They're everything I could want from a Metal Gear Solid game. The most enjoyable battle for me was the fight with Crying Wolf. The Laughing Octopus was quite wicked as well. The CQC with Liquid at the end was very awesome too. I never thought I'd enjoy a one-button fighter. T
here are a few things though I have to address. The stalking section at the beginning of Act 3 was *ridiculous*. It lasted much too long. The freakin Resistance member would stare at a poster of an Asian woman for 2 minutes, continue walking ahead 50 yards, would return to look at the Asian woman for 2 more minutes, then continue walking, and would return one last time. Then there were other parts where he'd get caught by the guards and I'd have to bail him out, just for him to return to the start of his path and get caught one more. The difficulty of the game was too easy. Big Boss Hard should have been the game's Medium setting. I breezed through just about everything they threw at me. Drebin's naked monkey was a nice touch. Really loved him.
I'd give the game a 9.5/10. Excellent in almost every regard, but there are too many very minor flaws for me to look past.
it was the best game available at its time of release.....same with GTA 4 of course games have kicked its but since sort of matched it but if you got MGS4 on its release date than youd feel different...and are you seriously complaining about the Mk. 2 pulling weapons out of thin air? because i mean in the former MGSs like 1 while fighting the MG you hit the R@ to pull it out and boom outta nowhere there it is....funny where did he shove that Stinger missile? along with a whole bunch of weapons???? Hey what about Big Boss in MGS3 i mean how did he get all those Crocidiles stuffed in that little backpack he had? matter of fact how the hell is Snake even alive?clones arent possible aww man MGS sucks!!!!! oh wait its a game.....
Hype thats all. Just like RE:5 and a couple other games that are over rated on PS3. Think how insane people act over FF7. And yet every FF game after that has been better in every way.
Really? RE:5 is extremely underrated imo. i dont think so resident5 its overrated mgs4 and gtaiv are perfect gamesPlease Log In to post.
