I am currently on netflix with the 1 rental and streaming and I just joined a week ago. $9.99 is still pretty high to me but reasonable I guess. I got an email today that the same plan would cost $16 starting September. A 60% increase?! Netflix made a ton of profit in 2010 and they are gonna get greedy now? Way too much for getting a few dvds (missing many newest releases) and having a somewhat limited internet streaming selection. I guess it is back to redbox.

I only use the streaming service. Unlimited movies and TV shows for $8.99 is one hell of a deal.

Blockbuster is good.

3 movies/games out for $19.95 a month (they have Blu Rays)

Or just use Netflix streaming, that's what I do.

There's plenty of good stuff to watch.

It's too bad they raised the price quite a bit, but it's still a great deal as far as I'm concerned. All the movies you can stream and 1 DVD out at a time for a monthly fee that's still less than the price of 1 new DVD. I'm not even going to bother grumbling about the price increase :P

Honestly, what do you expect? It's corporate America. Capitalism is a sham. If someone has something that everyone else wants, the holder puts the price on. And they can increase it at any time they want and put as many restrictions on it. As long as people continue to fund it. And as long as there are people like red box, monopoly laws will never kick in.

You should probably be thankful that they are being as generous as they are. They could jack up the prices triple and people would still be bowing down to them. Look at gamefly. They are pretty overpriced IMO for a rental service. And every year, they increase the price like $10. This is the first I've heard of Netflix wigging out on everyone.

BobMarley1969

I don't see how I should be thankful that netflix has been generous. A dvd rental and limited selection of streaming for $16 is too expensive especially when it is jumping from $10. I think this price jack is gonna actually hurt them in the long run as plenty of customers will be leaving. As for gamefly, they are ridiculously overpriced especially when you can buy plenty of games for cheap on ebay and amazon. $23 plus tax per month is definitely overpriced.

I won't be getting rid of Netflix, I am just going to downgrade to streaming only for $8/month. We never watch the dvd anyways and if I want a dvd I will just go to redbox as you mention. For $8/month I got rid of our $60/month dish network, so it's definitely worth it to me and I've found some great shows on Netflix that I probably wouldn't have watched on Dish.

Do you have a better system? Are people in communist China or Cuba better off than you are? Is socialism doing wonders for southern Europe's economy right now? These so called evil corporations have gotten together and made some pretty damn fine things (cars, gaming systems, restaurants, etc etc etc) and most of us benefit greatly from them. If you have such a problem with it, why don't you either leave or give away every single thing you own that was made by an evil corporation. Then tell me how great your life is.

$10 was too much? I thought it was quite a steal.

The price change does suck; they're charging you fully for two services. I wouldn't mind if the price went up for $2, but a 60% increase is too much of an increase, imo. I might switch my plan to streaming only; they added the X-men and Spider-man animated series just recently, so that might keep me busy for a while.

$7.99 is still good for the internet streaming but the dvd (1 at a time) will cost an additional $7.99. They are getting rid of the current $9.99 plan (dvd and streaming) and charging $16 in September. Is it worth it? I dont think so but it is still better deal than movie theater or cable.

You can blame the movie studios for the price hike because apparently they're jacking up the licencing fees...and unfourtunately you can expect it to get worse as they ask for more and more money. Netflix has little choice but to hike the price, if they're paying more and more to get the content they can't exactly keep the subscription price the same without going bankrupt.

WHO CARES!!!!!! I have the 2 out at a time and instant stream and it's f\going up 4 dollars!!!!!! It's not like they are adding 20$ to the subscription. Some people are acting like it's the end of the world. Just don't buy a 15 movie ticket during the month. Will that help?

End of the world?! No. I just think a 60% rate increase is pretty high. Good for you that you don't mind paying nearly $22 (after taxes) for your plan. You must really watch a ton of movies and tv shows. Not many people watch that many movies to justify a $22 plan especially with the lame internet streaming.

This. The movie industry is starting to dislike the subscription model. That's why they were so happy when youtube rolled out their rental based service. Still, $8 for the streaming service is a good deal.

Netflix is lame crap. There's nothing on it. You type in "transformers" and it gives you "transmorphers". Lame crap. You can rent new releases at my local video store for 79 cents during the week. I will stick with them.

it's funny, I've been a streamer for over six months now and when I was finally ready to switch to the full plan, they decided to reveal that they'll be hiking up the prices. I'll be sticking to my streaming only plan, thank you very much.

There's plenty of good stuff to watch.

ZombieKiller7

I've been using Netflix since it came out in '98, and therefore I've boycotted and spoken badly of Blockbuster, but I may have to cancel my mail program with Netflix and try theirs. And just pay for unlimited streaming.

Some may say i'm complaining, but my service went from $15 to $25 to $27 and now to $35. $35 a month is a lot, all claims of whining aside.

Tell me about it TC. I got the 3 DVD/blurays and streaming. Suddenly they are now charging me more for the same service.$27.98 vs the original$23.99. Its funny how some people say its not a big deal. LOL you guys must love getting charged more for less or this case the same. I wouldn't mind it if they said "hey we'll give you a fourth DVD" or "you get to stream new movies ahead of everyone else because you are part of our premium subscribers". Give me something....hell. I'm paying more and I'm getting the same things? Why would I want to pay more when I already pay less for something you guys CAN provide me for less. Just like the TC I'm pretty much ending netflix September. Thanks netflix, thanks for treating your loyal customers the right way.

If Netflix was struggling and they weren't making huge profit, I can better understand the 60% price increase. However, netflix added more than 3 million subscribers just in the 4th quarter of 2010. The company ended with 20 million subscribers which is a 63% increase from 2009. For the 4th quarter of 2010, netflix reported earning of $50 million on nearly $600 million in revenues, up 52% and 34% from the year before.

So what does Netflix do for their customers that gave them their huge profit?

"The customers really like us so lets jack up the price by 60%. If lot of the customers leave, big deal because we will still profit more even with less subscribers."

You are seriously duped. Its called freedom. Netflix is free to have screwy price points and we are free to cancel. I will likely cancel streaming as I don't think they have good streaming selection anyway.

I'm really surprised by how many people are complaining about the streaming service. $8 a month is cheap and they have a lot of great movies and tv shows on there. Granted this is a gaming website, so maybe people don't want to pay that much since games are already expensive, but dang, my wife would shoot me if I didn't pay for netflix or satellite/cable, so for me netflix is the much cheaper choice. And as I've already mentioned I think they have a great selection and the stream is generally good quality.

Operating costs surely are not going down. Between the original content they are paying for and licensing fees going up, operating costs are going up.

This ^ To say that Netflix can change their prices if they want is crazy to me. It would be different if we were getting more out of the service, or operating costs were increasing. But we are getting the same service we always have and with so much of Netflix attention focused on streaming these days over physical DVD's, operation costs should be going down.

It's nice to know that so many of you have no problem throwing away your money. Sure it's only a few extra bucks a month; just like its only an extra $5 for that map pack on the FPS you play, or just $1.99 for that cool skin for your character, and only $.99 each for those 2 exclusive unreleased tracks that go with that CD you just bought. Before you know it, it all adds up. Its nothing more then nickel and diming of consumers to get extra money for the same stuff we already got for less. And the reason why this stuff happens, because so many people say "well its only a few extra dollars, who cares".

Netflix shares tumble 19% as subscribers left after the price hike. I guess I wasn't the only one leaving Netflix.

I am glad after hearing this news. Not only did they jack the price up 60%, they are gonna be losing starz in their online streaming.

If Blockbuster was smart, they'd capitalize on this. Mimic Netflix with an unlimited streaming/1 dvd or game combo package for $11.99 a month. You could have 1 game/movie out at a time and unlimited streams. Take the dvd or game back to the physical store and recieve a free rental of that kind ( a movie brought back would get you a free movie rental. A game brought back could get you either a free movie or game rental).

Blockbuster is shutting down slowly but surely. They went bankrupt.
