watching the interview really dropped a lot of hype i had for the game. sure it looks pretty.. but the dragon on dragon battles... Kinda hurt my feelings. especially when the camera shifted behind the two dragons.. and the whole battle between the two dragons just looked corny as hell. and then when the two closed in on each other... i don't know.. i just wasn't feelin it.

everything else about the game was hype but... Lair being a AAA? I really don't think so. especially if the dragon vs dragon is supposed to be the seller for the game and it really looks corny.

i know what i think.. but what say ya'll?

head over to IGN and watch the interview
http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/761/761161/vids_1.html

hopefully a demo will be released soon so i can try the game.. but.. here's hopin they change the battle system for the dragons up a bit.

otherwise, i have a feelin it's gonna be a very lookin pretty game with garbage gameplay thing...

I want to play this game just because I really love the concepts going into it. I like that they say and thought "In every other flight game, so much is about just shooting and not being physical at, so we're going to do the exact opposite." I also think that guy in the interview (who I believe is the president of Factor 5) is great at interviews. He's completely honest and doesn't use any generalized, BS terms like most developers do when they're interviewed. I am almost certain I will be buying this game. I do think the dragon fight portions look a little on the crappy side, but if the designers made the controls as tight as everyone is saying they are, it should be fine. I love the ambition and originality of this game.

Yeah, the game looks great, but I really do hope that they are still going to change the close combat animations. Everything else looks so realistic, but the dragons ramming each other... well... it just looks like two invisible hands clashing toys against one another. Keep in mind that the footage they showed is still the old stuff. So, I have hopes that they've worked it out a bit more in the meantime. The game still looks like great fun and the graphics are still mindblowing. The close combat animations are the only thing that stand out negatively to me.

well that's just peachy. cause, everything else about the game was fine.. but when i saw the two dragons fly side by side and one just bumps the other one.. a lot of hype that i had for this game.. died. i mean.. the game looks beautiful. you know? flying through dragon flames and burning the ish out of giant bulls.. FUN! i agree. but...

the dragon on dragon battles, they need to put a lot of focus into that.. also.. can the two dragons fight on the ground? or is it strictly air to air? you know? i mean come on! where's the goodness? if anything.. i would expect to be able to ram an enemy dragon into a building and have the building fall upon enemy soldiers. THAT WOULD BUILD HYPE! I would really get excited if i saw something like that, and not just a cut scene but actual ingame. who wouldn't get hype if you saw that? that would sell the game right there.

like i said.. i want a demo soon. so i can try it out. i'm too old to be goin out and buying which ever cause it looks shiny. i'll give the game it's beauty. it's absolutely gorgeous to look at.. but am i looking at a rehash of drakengard? or am i lookin at a next gen dragon game. I love dragons. and thought of flying the dragon would be great fun.. but if i wanna battle another dragon.. how will it look? because what i saw. it really did hurt my feelings.

because dragon vs dragon is what's gonna sell this game. and if it's not there.. then not just gamespot, but a whole lot of places are gonna say "what happend?".

but i will keep my eyes open on this game.

and whoever did the linkified for me! I APPRECIATE IT HOMIE! THANK YOU! (^ ^) V

Dragons fireing fireballs at each other and jumping from dragon to dragon and kiling them seems fun to me.....            But i see ur point who knows wat they'll do with the game? Drakenguard came out good.

Good post. This interview was very informative about the game and it's story. Lair still has me hooked, so I'll be there when it launches. Hopefully you guys will be there too.

i really liked the interview and i think this game will be great. they do show a clip of ground combat in the interview (youre on the dragon) and there seems to be a creature there amongst the 50 billion guys on the bridge so i think you will be able to fight without flying.... on the ground. im stoked on this one and hopefully it will be as good as im hoping.

Imagine you are in the air, on a dragon, killing people on the ground and battling dragons in the air, sounds like fun, now replace the dragon with a space craft and well you get WARHAWK, another simmilarity is that you can get off of you dragon or you plane and fight people on the ground. If i had to choose between Warhawk and Lair, I'd choose LAIR 4 sure.

The gameplay for the game has always been what was suspect... but it's Factor 5 and the concept is hot, so in the very least I do expect the game to be AA... which will still be worth getting.

Those are all pretty old footage too... I'm sure they've been polishing up the gameplay since then but the dragon fights weren't particularly lame to me... I just think they need a smoother transition into them. Looks kinda jerky. But if that's my worst complaint about the game then I'll be happy.

That's precisely what killed my excitement about this game at TGS. :( That and the lack of ground attacks. All eye candy, no variety. I really hate the way they've reduced the hijacking to just pressing one button every few seconds.

I don't think Lair was ever meant to be a AAA consoler seller. It has always been AA top for me.

To be honest, we've not seen much at all about Lair. All we've seen is a very, very tiny snippet of the game and we all know the story is going to be way huge. We've only seen very old gameplay even when it came out at TGS it looked like what was shown was a little old. Developers tend to do that sometimes.

If I were to put a % on what we've seen of the game I would say it's not even 1% of the game. I have a feeling this game is going to be massively epic in all sense of the word. I've been gaming for over 20 years so guys like me tend have a decent idea when a game is going to be just off the chain. This game is going to be sick! and I feel it's story will be a very big part of it's success. We'll just have to wait and see but for me it's a no brainer.

I'm worried about the gameplay. Unless this game was delayed to fall, I'm concerned that six months won't be enough to finish the damn thing, since the last six months of any major game are usually dedicated to bug fixes and tweaking rather than adding new gameplay mechanics or drastically changing existing mechanics.

He's talking about the awkwardness of the animations. In a generation where games are capable of such fluid and natural animations (i.e. Assassin's Creed), Lair's animations look positively archaic.

i would hope so. cause after six months.. and the game is released and the dragon battles still look like that.. wow. that's next gen... that's next gen indeed.

where's my demo at? I want to see an update. it's odd. your president is gonna come out and have an interview.. he's gonna bring nothing with him to show... there was another convention where they showed stuff for Lair after TGS. right?

i mean.. i can't go off of reputation alone. I don't care what you made. i'm lookin at what you're making.. the game has to sell itself. and beautiful as it is. i'm mainly lookin at the dragon battles. that's what i'm lookin forward to with this game. not using the dragon to incinerate people or other bull like beasts, that's all icing on the cake.. i thought the main selling point was the battles between the dragons themselves.. story music epic. i heard. but if you're president is comin out for an interview, give him some new hotness to show.

everybody is saying this is old footage. okay. that's fine. but because this is all i have to work with.. how are you selling this game to me if all you have to show, is from 6 months ago? your reputation? SC3.. namco.. garbage. Namco has a beautiful reputation.. but why is SC3 for the ps2 garbage? looks beautiful.. but it's garbage. i can't go off of reputation. where's my demo at?

hopefully, god willing. the animations and parts of the gameplay for the dragon battles themselves have changed.. cause if the final product comes with that? i'll be happy with the demo.

i would hope so.

I'm only concerned about the limited gameplay demonstrated at TGS. Historically, if a game needed further gameplay modifications at the six-month-mark, the developer would announce a delay so that they'd have some buffer time to both improve the gameplay AND test the gameplay. The animations themselves can be pretty easily fixed, I would think.

watching the interview really dropped a lot of hype i had for the game. sure it looks pretty.. but the dragon on dragon battles...

I really don't think so. especially if the dragon vs dragon is supposed to be the seller for the game and it really looks corny.

i know what i think.. but what say ya'll?

head over to IGN and watch the interview
http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/761/761161/vids_1.html

hopefully a demo will be released soon so i can try the game.. but.. here's hopin they change the battle system for the dragons up a bit.

otherwise, i have a feelin it's gonna be a very lookin pretty game with garbage gameplay thing...

kelindas02

Maybe our expectations of the game were different from the very beginning.... b/c I just watched that interview and I'm actually more excited about the game now than I was before. The combat was a little rough, but for the most part it looks good.

My main concern was that the game was going to be shallow and repetitive. Well he just put those fears to rest. First of all, with the dragon combat, he said that there will be traditional fighting controls which means it isn't just simple button mashing. Also, he disclosed that the more dragon battles you get in, you will unlock more combos and abilities for your own dragon. And the fact that there will be different dragons available later in the game is also pretty exciting. He says that there is a focus on progression so that your dragon will feel stronger as the game progresses... and that was my biggest concern.

But the biggest thing I think they are doing well is including an interesting backdrop. They are focusing on making sure the game has a good story.... and I honestly thought that was going to be one piece that was lacking from this game. I'm really looking forward to this game's release now.

Yea but the gameplay mechanics are fine... did you watch the entire interview? There is quite a bit that they are putting into the gameplay mechanics. The animations are the only thing I think could use some polishing and I'm sure they'll tighten it up.

Anybody remember Panzer Dragoon Orta (hopefully I got the name correct) on Xbox? Gamespot rated it like 9.0+ and almost nobody played it. I played it, it's an OK game, but far inferior to zone of enders 2. Why? because Panzer Dragoon Orta was just about shooting shooting and shooting more on a freaking rail!

As long as Lair doesn't repeat the same fate as Panzer Dragoon Orta's, as long as Lair offers freedom and a variety of combat mode (like close range combat, long range combat, and different firing mode), then it'll be a good game.

In fact, even if Lair is exactly like Panzer Dragoon Orta, Gamespot will give it a good score. And also let's face it, every shooting game, be it air-to-air shooting, or a first person shooting, or any kind of game that's about shooting, game play is bound to be repetitive anyway.

Also, with all the talk about animations & gameplay mechanics... I think it's worth noting that this is going to be the most realistic dragon game we've ever been given anyway.

We're all excited b/c it's a next gen dragon game, but even he said they can't fit everything they want to do into this one (we'd be waiting for another year).... but as long as this one is a success, they already have some things they are going to make sure they implement in the 2nd one (like a robust online mode).

Uhmmm yeah, I think we'll be seeing topics like this one when great PS3 games are about to come out. The amount of epic games so early on in the PS3 system's launch is staggering and since no other console has had such number of new and epic IPs in it's first 6 months - talk less of the first year - I think xbots and the like are going to start new slander tactics to try and curb the enthusiasm for games coming out. The thing is, there has been no other game like Lair so it maybe easy targets for xbots to throw doubt around for games like MotorStorm and the like.

hopefully the combat will be more open ended.. instead of a static camera floating behind the two dragons.. and you use the tilt controller to ram the other dragon.. and the other dragon says ow, until you finally clinch.. then you press certain combos to do whatever.. to knock the dragon out of the sky.

i want something like.. i don't know.. i would have to say action rpg's would be the best example. or even resident evil 4 sequences, where you had to push a button at the exact moment to get it right. or! simply fly into dragon.. ram him and then fly around him in circles.. to set him up and look for openings.. or take him from the top.. and drive onto the bridge, and continue combat from there if need be. or just take off and fly after another dragon. or if you manage to get under him ram upwards into it's stomach and then clinch.. and combo it out.. something more than what i saw..

6 months have passed from TGS, god willing. they did it proper, and they're gonna blow my mind.

i'll keep my eyes and my mind open. let's see the demo.

No they don't. Drakengard can't even start to compare to the epic scale of Lair.

how many people know exactly what i'm talkin about?

from the interview where they show the dragon battles? I'm not talkin about what's he saying. i'm talkin about the game. "the flight and fight mechanic" that whole section..

"where you fly side by side in pursuit mode, and ram the dragon."

that.. that! it's what's hurting my feelings right now. watch that whole section.. it needs more. that.. pursuit mode just isn't cuttin it. the tumble is fine... it's just what initates it that needs work.

and by the way.. i just need to know. how is it that drakengard doesn't count? the premise for both games are the same. and it's still a dragon game. how does it not count?

what kind of fans are you? it seems like your trolling yourselves on this one..i think this game looks fantastic and about the gameplay. well. ive never played it and neither have you guys. why? because its not OUT yet. so b4 u judge a game by what the gameplay looked like months ago just sit back and watch it develop until it comes out. then either rent it or buy it and then and ONLY then can u judge it.

First, you seem to be locked into this notion that the ramming fight mechanic is the meat of the game when it's just a small portion of gameplay which no doubt can be smoothed out later but even in the state we've seen it, it's not bad for a new IP. Secondly, Drakengard's gameplay was a very straight forward action adventure, good but ...; Lair is more like the game is playing an RTS with it's self and you're just trying to help your side win.

Panzra dragoon was a good game but I don't get how it was considered superb by GS. It was an OK shooter but if you're into dragons I'm sure you felt the same as I did with the whole plasma balls and laser beams from the dragons. It was also very linear. A good game but we've been longing of a true dragon game and this one seems to be it in all regards.

Anyone who likes this sort of dragon gameplay would be giving the developers very bit of good luck vibe they can so we may have a chance of experiencing even better gameplay for Lair 2 not over exaggerating one simple game mechanic as the make or brake and down fall of the IP.

i'm a fan of fun/good games.. now. game looks beautiful. i'm not saying it looks ugly. did you watch the interview? did you see the gameplay? I'm talking about that "flight and fight feature" and how cheesy and corny it looks. the rest of the game is peachy from what i seen. beautiful.. but.. for the flight and fight.. i hope they make it more open ended... that's what i'm hoping.
and that's what i'm trying to get across to you people. now the icings for the cake.. are lovely.. i love em.. it's sweet.. tastes nice.. looks mighty tasty.. but the bread of the cake.. is the dragon battles. that's the meat right there, right? that's a sell point.. now.. if you watched the interview.. you would have seen something like... two dragons flying side by side, with a static camera and one dragon ramming the other until you clinch and tumble.. that's not cheesy looking? for me it is. especially when, i'm a fan of dragons.. and one thing i do enjoy.. is imagination a dragon fight.. now ask yourself, what would grab you as a game of the year? the flight and fight you see now.. or, taking an enemy dragon by surprise and ramming it into a building/ bridge and watching the building fall? and that's not even by cutscene? but an actual attack you laid out using the tilt. if you saw that in a video that showed the gameplay.. that wouldn't drive you to buy the game even more? the seller for me, isn't the company name, is not the fact you can run around the ground incinerating things.. or flying using the tilt.. the seller for me.. isn't the story or the intro 911 moment.. what's gonna sell this game.. for me.. is entirely the dragon battles. that's what's gonna sell this game. and if it doesn't meet my expectation.. delay the game even more! get this bastard right. I agree with most of ya'll.. it's beautiful i do have anticpation for it. but it would taste a serious lie to say, I didn't lose any hype when i saw that dragon battle. granted. it's old footage. things could have changed. and with the release date coming in May.. I need some new hotness. you know? that's what i need. i don't wanna see stuff from TGS.. I want to see some stuff now. May is coming up in 2 months. 2 MONTHS! did they change the dragon battle? I hope so. I've been through too many years where, I saw beautiful games for their time.. beautiful, gorgeous games... and ended up playing like crap. they say sky is the limit, and that imagination is the only thing holding people back now.. well.. get some kids into factor 5... and let the kids tell them a dragon battle. cause i need more. the thing they got now.. is too.. limited....
