Backwards Compatibility.
20gb and 60gb both support PS2 games through an emotion chip, it supports most PS2 games
The old 80gb (CECHExx) also supports PS2 games, although through software emulation, not as many PS2 games are supported (est. 80%)
All other models out now are NOT backwards compatible. There have been no annoucements of B/C returning on new models or threw FirmWare updates, those are just rumours.
- How to take care of your PS3
Taking care of your PS3.
One of the main problems with the PS3 is overheating, just like most electronics. To keep your PS3 from freezing and damage make sure there is a lot of room around your PS3 and it is well ventilated. Also make sure to clean your PS3 regularly to keep dust out of it and from damaging it, wipe it down and use a low powered vacuum cleaner around all the vents.
- Known Problems/Issues on the PS3
- Lack of upscaling: Simply put, if your HDTV does 1080i but not 720p, then expect to play your games in 480p, as the PS3 will not upscale the graphics to 1080i. Bummer.
- Overheating: While it's not as bad as the Xbox 360's issues (read: no dead consoles), a lot of retailers are reporting test boxes overheating. We'll chalk this up to the semi-airtight plastic enclosure until more users get to use the console in the open.
- Backwards-compatibility: Several PSOne/PS2 games don't work correctly with the PS3 yet; this should be remedied with upcoming System Updates. Until then, check out IGN's backwards compatibility listHERE.

- Backwards Compatibility
- Blu-ray Problems
- Yellow Light Of Death
- Black Screen at Start Up
Q: When I try to install Ratchet and Clank Tools of Destruction the PlayStation tells me there is not enough room on my hard drive but when i check there is heaps of room on the drive.
A: This is a know problem with this particular title. To resolve the issue you will need to add about 500MB of data to the hard drive. This data can be in any form. That is it can be music, videos, game save, game install, game demos etc.
Q:What does it mean when my PS3 flashes a yellow light during start-up?
A: It means system failure and it will not operate anymore. There's a quick fix but it's not recommended. Only experts at this point can fix it. You have to call Sony with ot without warranty. Only them can help you. the number to call is 1-800-345-7669.
Q: My PS3 freezes alot when playing blu-ray movies/games, What's wrong?
A: It most likely means your Bluray drive laser is starting to burn out, however it could be many other things such as: a dirty Blu-ray lens, your ps3 being in a small space and over heating, or posibly just glitches in a game.
Make sure your ps3 is in a well ventilated area. Check to see if other discs work, like CDs or DVDs and other games.
If the problem still occurs call Sony.
Q: I switched from HDTV to a SDTV and now theres no picture, just sound, whats wrong?
A:Your ps3 is still set to a high resolution. completly turn off your ps3, then hold the power button until you hear 3 beeps, it should now be set to default video settings.
Q: If I Re-Format myPS3 will I still have all my Trophies/DLC?
A: Trophies / no, they are tied to your psn and are stored on sonys servers.
DLC will be deleted but you can redownload everything you purchased for free off the ps store.
Q: How do I change my PSN,I don't like it anymore?
A:You can't, you should have chose something better.
Q: Is it ok to turn off my Playstation 3 using the power switch on the back.
A: Yes it is ok to use the power switch but only once you have place the Playstaiton 3 into standby. You can place your Playstaiton 3 inot standby by holding down the Playstaiton button on your contoller and selecting "Turn off the system", by holding the power swithc on the front of the console OR by selecting "Turn off system" under the "Users" icon on XBM. It is recomended taht if you are not going to be using the Playstaiton 3 console for an extended period of time that you turn the console off using the power switch at the back of the unit. This will save power and reduce risk of damage casused by power surges. NOTE: if you turn your console off using tis switch you can not use the remote play functionality.
Q: Why do I get black screen at start up?
A: Here's a video of it. HERE
- Make sure your ps3 is on stand by (red light on)
- Hold down the power button until the red light turns green keep holding until it goes to stand by.
- Now dont wait just do the same thing again immidentaly dont wait after Step 2 just go straight away and do the same thing again.
- A screen should come up saying connect controller with usb cable do that and press the PS button, A menu will come up 6 options you will have to restore PS3.
- If optiondoes not work call Sony because the video out chip may have blown or come unsoldered.
Q: My PS3 doesn't recognize my controller, is my controller broke?
A: Most likely you just need to reset your controller, use a small pin to press the reset button on the top of the controller.
Q:IfI put balogna into my PS3 will it work?
A: No, balogna will not play in your PS3, and contrary to belief there is no such thing as "blu-ray balogna" so don't stick it in thinking you can get free demos. I you do however you will have to open your PS3 and vacuum it out, pressing the eject button like 10000 times won't do anything. And if you do, for the love of god, POST PICS.
Q: Which is better Vertical or Horizontal position forthe PS3?
A: After a thermal camera test it was found that keeping the ps3 horizontal actually keeps it cooler. Other electronic speciacilist say that if you keep your ps3 vertical it will put strain on the small motors in the Blu-Ray drive. So Horizontal is better.
Q: Can I Change My Email Address on my PSN Account?
A: Yes you can. You will find the option on the cross media bad (XMB) under "Playstaion Network" -> "Account Managment" -> "Account Information" -> "Sign In Email Addres". Changing your email address will not afffect your PSN ID.
Q: Will games from overseas/other countrieswork on my Playstaiton 3?
A: Yes they will. There is no region locking on Playstaiton 3 games. However there are two things you need to consider. First is the DLC locked on this game. Some games lock their DLC which means to use DLC you must purchase the contecnt from the same region PSN store you purchased the game from. The second thing you need to consider is will the game be in your spoken language.
Q: Is it ok to leave your game disc in the PS3 after playing it for awhile, leave it there and turn it off when not in use?
A: Its fine to leave a discs in your Playstaiton 3 while you are not using it. However ensure that you remove the disc from your Playstaiton 3 before physically moving your console. Not doing so can result in damage to the disc, the disc loading mechanisms or the disc becoming stuck in the drive.
