lol i dont have a ps3 but linux usually comes with boot loaders, and at system startup you will probably get prompted what to boot or it will be sumwhere on the xmb interface to boot linuxmasterchef1000 linux is an os based on unix code it is freely distributed by the people who made it although some are purchaseble and consists of 100's of different versions. It should run totally seperate to your playstation interface, thus with linux using your ps3 like a computer
you NEED to request a sticky dude, tell a mod, and i wanna know if ya can put it on HDD also like crazy said???Mr_Prezidentthat sticky can be a CD, Memory stick , sd card or any thing! i would recconmend cd.
do i need a dvd or can i put YDL on my external HD and install it on my ps3 via external harddriveCrazy87the Installer Files could be on anything (usb flash drive, external hard disk(not very sure about hard disk though) memory card, or ANYTHING the PS3 can read. BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT the YDL file itself MUST be on a DVD, because during the installation your ps3's internal hard drive will be partinoned and therefore DELETEING ALL DATA. so you must backup your HDD's hard drive BEFORE the installlation.

i think its totally separate. LINUX WILL NOT erase the ps3 dahsboard (offically called game-os). every time you load linux, it will ask you if you want to go back to game-os or not.chose yes and no problem!!!What is the Yellow Dog Linux? What does it do exactly?MellowMikeyit's an operating system, a program that's just like windows xp. It "transforms your ps3 into a home comupter" you can surf the internet, instant message, read emails, use word processor, and even install your own programs. basically it's a must have for any ps3 owner
took me 25 minute to download that ISO.are you serious? what king of internet connection do you have? i have road runner which is supposed to be really fast and it took me 1 hour 53 minutes
PowerCharged
so will i have to back up my data from my ps3? because i dontg think i have anything to back it up with...pridetwoyes you must back up all data, after the linux installation, they can be safely put back on the hard drive

Im guessing you NEED to format the PS3 using the Ultily format thing before putting the installer disk in, right?
EDIT: Nevermind, i got it formatting for 10gb now. So i need 2 disks right? 1 with all the installer info then the actual YDL file on the other DVD-R?
how am i supposed to burn the 3.2 gb.that's way to bigmasterchef1000
I used nero startsmart, good program. It took 10 mins to burn to a 4.6gb or whatever my DVD-r's are on there, its not that hard... If you dont have a decent burner program, open my computer and select the DVD rom(with DVD in the computer of course). And copy it onto the disk...
Ok ran into an issue.
Ok i have the Hard drive portioned for 10gb for other os. I have 2 dvds, 1 with that 3.28gb file(alone) ona disk and the other with the PS3-otheros- and the other 2 files on. I put the dvdwitht he 2 files in the folder and installed that and put the default operating system to Other OS. Now when i boot ym PS3 up, it has the Linux pengiuns on top. I put n the disk with 3.28gb file in and pressed tab to install then pressed enter, and it says something about a file not found. What did i do wrong and is it repairable?
how do i backup demos and gamesave on my ps3? like come on it was a pain to get tekken dark ressurectionblazinpuertoroc
I dont think you can copy demos(copyright reasons) but game saves are easy. Either use an external HD or a little usb flash drive(if you have 60gb, you can use memory card readers too). But you go to Save Data ultily and copy over the game saves to the selected device. Example, for Resistance, i pressed triangle on the game save then picked USB #......(.............) for my external HD and hit copy. Quite simple.

Anywho it keeps saying when tryng to install YDL when i press tab to get to installtext(dont have HD tv) it says this: ppc/ppc64/vnlinux-ps3: Not found. When i burned the file it said it changed it to .UDF format because its a 3.28gb file. Is that what is causing my problems?
Ok Im having quite a few issues now.
I got the .ISO 3.28gb file on the DVD-R now. I start up the PS3 and it goes to the kboot screen. Now when i select installtext(for low res tvs) or any other option it doesnt do anything, it just makes this new that that is liek this:
kboot: (i can type here but dont know what) ...
And it keeps doing that kboot: - ... thing over and over, Am i suppose to enter in something? HELP PLEASE!!!
this guide is sucking bad as it will STILL not install.
Is it because im using an SDTV with composite cables that its not working? It seems like its missing a file..
When i tab to "installtext" for low-res tvs, it says:
/dev/sro:ppc/ppc64/unlinux-ps3: not found
what does that mean, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HELP ME HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
