lol i dont have a ps3 but linux usually comes with boot loaders, and at system startup you will probably get prompted what to boot or it will be sumwhere on the xmb interface to boot linux
masterchef1000 linux is an os based on unix code it is freely distributed by the people who made it although some are purchaseble and consists of 100's of different versions. It should run totally seperate to your playstation interface, thus with linux using your ps3 like a computer

the Installer Files could be on anything (usb flash drive, external hard disk(not very sure about hard disk though) memory card, or ANYTHING the PS3 can read. BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT the YDL file itself MUST be on a DVD, because during the installation your ps3's internal hard drive will be partinoned and therefore DELETEING ALL DATA. so you must backup your HDD's hard drive BEFORE the installlation.

i think its totally separate. LINUX WILL NOT erase the ps3 dahsboard (offically called game-os). every time you load linux, it will ask you if you want to go back to game-os or not.chose yes and no problem!!!

it's an operating system, a program that's just like windows xp. It "transforms your ps3 into a home comupter" you can surf the internet, instant message, read emails, use word processor, and even install your own programs. basically it's a must have for any ps3 owner
Wow, thanks for taking the time. Great post. I'm going to try this when I get home. This definitely IS a must-try for any PS3 owner. Sony should SO be pushing this functionality more (or even pre-load a free OS and sell it as a gaming "computer.")
Ok I need to know 1 thing first. Can you still use the XMB IF you wanted to? Is there a choice? Im asking because I know how to run Linux, but my brother doesnt and will probably kick my butt if i change something on it. Is there any way so he can still use the simple XMB but i can user Linux? Will we also ave our seperate "User" accounts?

I used nero startsmart, good program. It took 10 mins to burn to a 4.6gb or whatever my DVD-r's are on there, its not that hard... If you dont have a decent burner program, open my computer and select the DVD rom(with DVD in the computer of course). And copy it onto the disk...
Ok i have the Hard drive portioned for 10gb for other os. I have 2 dvds, 1 with that 3.28gb file(alone) ona disk and the other with the PS3-otheros- and the other 2 files on. I put the dvdwitht he 2 files in the folder and installed that and put the default operating system to Other OS. Now when i boot ym PS3 up, it has the Linux pengiuns on top. I put n the disk with 3.28gb file in and pressed tab to install then pressed enter, and it says something about a file not found. What did i do wrong and is it repairable?
Well im burning another dvd with the use Linux file and the otheros.bld file, i'll see if that works. If not i can always go back to boot-game-os to fix any problems :P.

I dont think you can copy demos(copyright reasons) but game saves are easy. Either use an external HD or a little usb flash drive(if you have 60gb, you can use memory card readers too). But you go to Save Data ultily and copy over the game saves to the selected device. Example, for Resistance, i pressed triangle on the game save then picked USB #......(.............) for my external HD and hit copy. Quite simple.

Im pretty sure of it as long as its your same account.
Anywho it keeps saying when tryng to install YDL when i press tab to get to installtext(dont have HD tv) it says this: ppc/ppc64/vnlinux-ps3: Not found. When i burned the file it said it changed it to .UDF format because its a 3.28gb file. Is that what is causing my problems?
I got the .ISO 3.28gb file on the DVD-R now. I start up the PS3 and it goes to the kboot screen. Now when i select installtext(for low res tvs) or any other option it doesnt do anything, it just makes this new that that is liek this:
kboot: (i can type here but dont know what) ...
And it keeps doing that kboot: - ... thing over and over, Am i suppose to enter in something? HELP PLEASE!!!
Found my problem. you have to do an ISO IMAGE COPY to get the file on the DVD properly, what i was doing was just copying the fie and getting that error. Here http://www.nero.com/nero7/enu/nero7-demo.php Use that to put the YDL 3.3gb file onto the DVD, courtesy of our good friends at the playstation forums :).
