Does that mean that BlockBuster Video will no longer carry Paramount or DreamWorks pictures in the next gen?

By default the answer is going to be yes now. Just like they don't carry Universal movies on highdef format, they will not carry Parmount movies on highdef format because they will not make the titles on Blu-Ray.
I've been saying this for a while, the only reason why Blu-Ray was winning in the software department is because they had much more studio exclusivity than HD. All it would take is one other stuido going exclusive with HD to make it intresting because lets face it.....just having Universal didn't do ANYTHING for them. Now if you can get them exclusive and not to mention some of the biggest movies of the year with Transformers/Shrek 3, it'll really give HD some teeth considering they will will also have Evan Almighty, Knocked Up, and Bourne 3 from Universal.
Still think Blu-Ray will win but now it'll take 2 more years lol.
This isn't the place to talk about this. If you want to have an open dialogue about this post here
http://forums.highdefdigest.com/
this doesn't really belong in the ps3 forum since the ps3 is not the only blue ray player out there if we start talking about blue ray movie then whats to stop people from flooding the forums with topics about dvds and cds and mp3 and whole mess of junk that will just clutter the forum.
these post just attract the fanboys from all side format and consoles and it really does nothing good and isn't productive at all.
Can't make people stop posting these topics but all im saying is that if you have respect for your fellow ps3 owners and or this forum lets stop with the blue-ray HD-dvd post (of course im not talking about blue ray games which does belong here, just the movies).
oh and for the record, Fox who has been exclusive with Blu-Ray this whole year is questionable now.
I purchase movies for rental locations and Fantastic 4 has yet to have a Blu-Ray release date (right now it's releasing in early Oct). Could this be a sign maybe Fox will go to HD too?
software, blu-ray is outselling hd-dvd 2:1 and they still have support of most of the major studios exclusively, this is just paramounts way of making a chunk of money quickly for a year or 2 cause they know the format war wont end by then and when this deal is up they can go back to supporting both formats.
mmirza23
Here is why it doesn't make sense that Paramount is doing this for $150 mill.
Warner Bros who is actually a partner with Toshiba (which means they own a stake in HD format) is releasing titles on BOTH formats. If they knew it was stupid to just go with HD, what the hell is paramount thinking? 150 mill is NOTHING. There has to be more to this than just a $150 mill check. To a stuido as big as Paramount/Dreamworks, they gain $150 millin one film. Heck they lost about $100 million making Evan Almighty so saying they made this decision on $150 mill paycheck is a little werid to say the least.
microsoft did pay them off, paramount has been selling more bd discs than hd and they switch to hd? it is fishy and makes absolutely no sense. Disney is still > dreamworks but this really is bad news.davez82

they are winning in the hardware department also. (w/ PS3)
what a load of crap. i can walk into any high street store and find at least one bay (ground to ceiling) with blu-ray movies. in my local HMV there is only 8 spaces for HD-DVD products, not even 1/50th of a bay. how can paramount justify this???? HD-DVD just doesnt selldarren05rand to back up your opinion, I have never seen a HDDVD title being sold in Portugal. EVER!!

What a load of **** The reason they did it is the $150 million Microsoft gave them.

I really wanted transformers on blu ray....oh well, just wont get it on release but once blu ray wins we'll get it, sok though the spiderman trilogy will be comming ;), oh and I just read on highdefdigest.com that fox and mgm will be back in supporting blu ray the announcement should come within a couple of hours.

And to back your opinion even more, I have never seen a HDDVD title being sold in Norway (And this summer I went to almost all the dvd/game selling stores in 2 big cities, cause I was looking for a ps3 to buy and where it was cheapest ;p) but I saw bluray movies in almost all the stores tho.
When will people realise microsoft DID NOT pay paramount 150 million.
The hd-dvd group(toshiba, warner bros etc) made the exclusivity deal with paramount and they will have paid them.
Microsoft are just supporter's of hd-dvd like intel it makes no sense what so ever for them to pay paramoount.
Microsoft could easily make a blu-ray player add-on for 360 and probably will one day.
In the gaming world it's microsoft vs sony but in the hd format war it's sony vs toshiba just like it has been for years.

Even if Blue-ray DVD isn't kicking HD-DVD's axxs, companies should do better to produce both formats to double the sales. But nope, paramount thinks by going to HD-DVD, it can get more money... how?
It has to do with some deals Toshiba did with it, otherwise, there's no explaination to this.
if Paramount goes to HD-DVD, and kills Blue-Ray completely, then they would benefit from this move.
But, Paramount's move only would cause the format war goes on longer if anything else, which will make consumers suffer in the end.
If all god damn companies just support one god damn format (I have both blue-ray on PS3 and HD-DVD on a toshiba laptop, so I don't care which format really wins), then the war should've already ended and everyone goes home happy!
Someone please, initiate a massive lobby in congress to make law about which format should be the "official" format!

Last ditch effort by the HD-DVD camp is how I see this. Personally I'm sick of all these bribes happening in the gaming and movie industry. Thanks a lot Paramount for dragging the war on, dang you I was happy it was almost settled.
Hopefully this will blow up in Paramounts face, now I know alot of people purchased their PS3's for gaming which I did as well however the Bluray player is an added bonus and we should support it as much as possible. I personally will not purchase any paramount properties until this deal is dead. It will suck not seeing Transformers but I guess I'll have to catch it on cable when if finally comes out. The ones hurt by this move which Paramount obviously do not care about are the consumers...ajthelegendWhen transformers comes out-just buy it on ordinary dvd,cos at least our PS3 drives will also play these+you'll save money on the purchase+let Paramount stick their HD movies where the sun dont shine!

Haven't seen any here in Greece either.
I've already emailed Paramount Home Entertainment (just select viewer services and then paramount home ent as the category if you want to do the same.) to express my dissatisfaction. And you'd think they'd need all the Star Trek fans they could get with the crap they've been spewing out. Transformers is my only concern. Guess I may have to try my hand at the world of illegal d^(oading until they come to their senses.
Also, to one of the earlier posters: Shrek 3 one of the biggest movies of the year? Really? Shrek 3? Really?!? We must be having a crappy year for the film industry.
I smell BRIBERY. There is no other explanation for such an idiotic move. I thought it was dumb that Universal started out as HDDVD only(and there are rumors that Toshiba payed them to do that), but why would you discontinue support for Bluray when it's outselling HDDVD 2 to 1???
The whole point of Paramount and Warner deciding to support both formatswas tomake as much HD disc sales as possible.
WTF? So in a Paramount boardroom, a bunch of execs had a meeting and came to the conclusion that they should drop Bluray and lose 66% of their HD disc sales???
This doesn't make the slightest bit of business sense at all. Toshiba, M$, or both paid Paramount to do this. Either that or someone slipped a bunch of acid in the coffee pot in the boardroom:P
Datadream, where are you getting your info? Must be from months ago. It's already been mentioned that Bluray is winning 2:1 from this website's analysis:
http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSN1419176920070815
And an Article by Gamespot mentions it as well:
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6176792.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=morenews&tag=morenews;title;8
I frankly don't care for this war because I already know who is going to win. Bluray. Now before you shoot that notion down, just think a second. DVD's were popular because they were betterlooking than VHS plus it had alot of additional pluses to it. You could watch movies but you could also use them as extra storage space (burners), games (PS2 startedDVD games), music (music videos, I believe there were a few DVD that just had flat out music only.) Now when these two new formats like HD DVD and Bluray came out, I had my assumptions that something different was going to go down this time. HD DVD may have High Definition quality DVD's now at an affordable price but did you know why? No one really mentionsthe reason why it's cheaperbecause it would probablyhurt Toshiba's Sales(Offtopic: Just like if USA knew we were the ones who supplied weapons to the Hajis in the Desert years ago andactually die from them now). Did anyone read the article when HD DVD came out... it would ONLY play movies. No music HD DVD's, No Games, JUST movies! Now what does Bluray do... oh lets go sarcastic and say it does everything that regular DVD's did but with more memory and in Hi-Def, HD DVD can't say that, period. Sony knew what they were doing in future proofing their system with Bluray because the outcome is going to be bluray winning this "Format War".
More proof is that no one is actually counting the numbers of overall Bluray CD's being sold but there are some research groups that are (The numbers/companies will be shown soon). They count not just Bluray movies but also take into the account of Bluray GAMES. Think about it for a sec, Count those numbers up and who do you think is winning the Format wars, HD DVD right? HA! **** No! Bluray is winning! No one takes into the consideration that if HD DVD had other formats beside movies, it would have wiped the floor with Bluray but Bluray is offering options to everyone. Paramount can go lick M$ and HD DVD's @$$ all they want, they will eventually get this smashed back in their face and gain the losses of not staying with Bluray. The will, like most companies, have no choice but go right back to Bluray because Bluray WILL become Standard and King! Look at VHS, DVD fought for a while and just took over, when was the last time you heard a movie company throw out on their commercial, "Buy this on VHS and DVD!" Nope, DVD has now become standard, just like Bluray will be! To me (and this is my opinion), I believe Bluray is keeping up with the trend of DVD with giving people and creators the options to make moves Hi-DEf, Gaming Hi-DEf, and music Hi-Def, a step into the future as you would say. HD DVD to me seems like it took a step back and is just like VHS, offering only you watching the movie, though in Hi-def but nothing new and not going towards the future.
Bluray is used for: Movies, Games, Music
HD DVD is used For: Movies
No wonder one format is cheaper than the other, you don't get **** from HD DVD. It seems that the consumer is getting ripped off with HD DVD. Bluray user's please keep supporting the format so it is standard and knock out this inferior HD DVD. It's paramounts loss and they will find out the hard way, whether they like it or not.
So what if we lost paramount? WE gained fox entertainment!!!

Actually you all...
While I want BluRay to remain available as I own a player (via PS3) according to market analysts and market watch sites - HD-DVD is actually outselling BluRay 2 to 1. The deal is that BluRay is the better technology - but HD-DVD stand alone players are MUCH less expensive making them an easier sell to the less tech saavy consumer. Same thing happened with VHS and BETA - and BETA was the superior technology.
In fact I read an article on AVSForum (one of the industries leading sources for sciense and technology information) that Walmart signed a contract a couple weeks ago for over a million units of an HD-DVD player that they were getting for $30 each. They are planning on retailing these for just shy of $100. That will really hurt BluRay unless a very inexpensive solution hits the market VERY soon.
Yet on the otherside you have the BlockBuster contract - though I now suspect they will break their BluRay exclusivity. I mean BlockBuster isn't going to not rent Paramount or Dreamworks movies - even if they have to reneg on their previous announcement and start carrying HD-DVD, they can't afford to not carry those studios movies.
ALL in ALL - like I said this is a complete mess and the only thing that's for sure is the consumer is going to get screwed one way or another. Hopefully they agree on a format standard or multi-read player soon.
whoa whoa buddy if you wanna be exacting
HDDVD PLAYERS are OUTSELLING BD PLAYERS 2:1 however if you put in PS3's as a BD player BD outsells HDDVD 2:1.
software, blu-ray is outselling hd-dvd 2:1 and they still have support of most of the major studios exclusively, this is just paramounts way of making a chunk of money quickly for a year or 2 cause they know the format war wont end by then and when this deal is up they can go back to supporting both formats.yea, i was thinkin' that's a load of crap... no way HD-DVD is beating Blu-ray, HD-DVD doesn't have enough support. But what i do agree with what mirza said. Look the contract as of now is rumored just to last till the end of 08, and by that time the format war will becoming to an end. Paramount saw 150million sitting there, and took it and ran. So they take the 150 million, lose some of that by sticking with HD-DVD, and jump back on Blu-ray around early 2009.
Also with this said... I can see M$ losing a lot of money doing the things they do. I just can't imagine M$ being able to throw around 50 million to Rockstar, 150 to paramount, and w/e they plan on throwing around much more. Look Bill Gates isn't with M$ anymore(atleast I believe) so the money may be slippin quick in the gaming division.
Paramount must have been smokin' the same crack, Rockstar, and Epic was smoking when they sold their souls to the devil.

Because it's from 2005. We all already knew Fox is Blu-Ray Exclusive. So is Disney/Buena Vista/Pixar etc. So is Sony Pictures (Duh)/MGM/Columbia/TriStar.
