I'm terribly sorry for making another thread about this in particular but just an attempt of sorting things out as i'm paranoid about this phenomena present, not only on my device but amidst many other.

So yeah, in essence my Ps3 starts off deadsilent which is deemed to be called as "level1", however as time progresses it increasingly adds up to the 2 remaining levels where as the latter of which auraly discernable "level3", however level2 is fairly quiet. Is this a flaw?

In addition i'm owning a PAL version of the 60GB SKU. Another thing I would like to say is that level3 is not as high as some posted on youtube for instance, I wouldn't assume it exceeds the sound of my TV when i'm playing but it's auraly discernable.

To suffice it, It doesn't go back to level2 when it's on level3 even if it's idle in the XMB.

I've never NE-VER heard my PS3 fan at all... and if I've had, I didn't even noticed it was the fan.

Chill down, I don't think it's gonna bust or something. ;)

I never turn my PS3 off and the fan usually runs on low all the time, although in the begining I had it in a cabinet and one day the door got closed and the fan did go to full speed but after oening the door and just giveing it a few minutes it cooled down nicely.

Mine is near silent during gameplay and while idle. The 360 = a turbine, whereas the Wii and PS3 are nice and quiet.

My PS3 fan (like all PS3 fans) will come on and can be quite loud under heavy load. Try running Folding@Home for a while, or gaming during the Australian summer. :)

hmmm ok coming from an owner of both a 360 and a ps3 you have nothing to complain about 360s fan is so loud its like starts to pick up momentom to fly when you start up a game i seriously thing the fan in the 360 could pick up the console and make it hover just because how fast and loud that fan is spinning i cant play at night because it wakes up people sleeping

I also own a noisy ps3, so I called sony to tell them about it, and they are sending me a box to ship it in. They also said that they will replace it with a brand new unit. If this unit turns out to be just as loud, I will just have to get used to it.

Did some recording tests and the fans range from around 10 DB at a comfortable room temperature to 35DB after 12 hours of heavy use in a non air conditioned room (the 12 hours of gaming was fun, the AC being out was not). This is still considerably quieter than a 360 under comperable conditions (60DB in the heat). Unfortunately I have no Wii data because I don't own one. As an audiophile one thing that DOES make the PS3 sound louder is the fact that most (all?) games use uncompressed audio that actually continues to sound good into dead silence. The compressed audio on the PS2 and 360 tends to start to sound bad to a trained ear before it reaches the noise floor of the console so my desire for a quieter console is mitigated by the poor sound quality in those instances.

Hardware used: Protools, Digi002, NT2-A Mic.

Consoles evaluated: PS3 (40GB), PS2 (slim rev 1), X360 normal (not arcade, not elite) purchased approximately a year after launch with intercooler because it starts to flip out in the heat without it.

The reason the 360 is so noisy is because it uses small fans. I think they're two 60mm or 70mm units. For the kind of airflow the 360 needs, they have to run at a high rpm. High rpm = more noise. The PS3 uses a 160mm blower fan and bigger heatsinks. Since the fan is bigger, it doesn't have to turn as fast to move the same amount of air.

My PS3 is pretty quite IMO. It's massive heatsink allows it to be passively cooled when you're just playing music or surfing the web, which is nice. When it comes on, it's about as loud as my PC on low fan speeds.

I can only hear the fan if I make a conscious effort. It really isn't loud. Maybe I'm just used to the fan noise from my gaming PC, which is much louder. The only time that my PS3 made a bunch of fan noise is when I was participating in the folding@home program. It sounded like a hand vac then.

Only noise that my PS3 makes is when it is reading the disc, those short little sounds .. but other than that it is quiet .. very quiet. Yes if I turn everything off in my room and really listen I can hear it a bit, but I mean come on it's suppose to make a little noise .. theres nothing wrong with your PS3 if it is making a little noise, be worried when it's not making any sound at all ..

420Token420 - The sound you're describing that you're aware of under a subdued regard, would that be the "fan noise" or essentialy the console operating? As far as I can tell, the "fan" noise is discerning when it kicks off, when it's fairly quiet.

Are you aware of any fan noise from approximately 10-13 feet what so ever? Or just normalt operation of the console?

Finally got to vote and will say that the only time I hear the fan is when it's really hot here or when I had it in a cabinet for while and the door would get closed accidently. Also I never turn my PS3 off at any time and it never get's loud enough to desturb anyone in the house at night. I can play games late at night as long I use headphones and it's still dead silent.

Since some of whom denotes their PS3s are "deadsilent" I wanted your opinions about what you claim being merely dead silent. So just and attempt persuading you guys to check a segment out based on an mp3 which takes 800kb.

Here's a distribution of a guy that has provided this on the net where you can download a sample of how the various stages of fan noise actually sounds and varies. Open up the website and scroll down to "Recording Demonstrating the Fan Speed Steps" and under the results you'll see:

"The sample can be downloaded from here. The original sample in its full length (17 minutes, 174MB, 16bit WAV) is available pr. request. "

Here's the website where you find the mp3 segment: http://asklandd.dk/ps3/ps3-fan-noise.html#recording

Keep in mind it's a compressed segment of voice which takes about 800KB, but you'll hear "level3" in the end of the sample kicking off after about 16-17 seconds.

In conclusion, is that dead silent for you, in terms of fan noise when gaming? Or have you never ever heard that kind of fan noise under any regard what-so-ever? I'm very grateful if some of you that acclaim your PS3s deadsilent would check the mp3 out and report back if you've confronted that noice on your PS3s when gaming.

Really appreciate your time reading this.

Regards tinker courtesy to you

(bump) Please check the mp3 out and report whether the sound is present in the 16-17th on your consoles, or not with regards to gaming.

The fan for mine isn't that loud, and the only time it gets loud is when I'm booting up a CD or when I've had it on for a long time and it needs to let off some extra heat. Other than that it's pretty much unnoticeable.

Thanks for replying guys, but would you be kind to refer to the mp3-file within that website and report back based on those sounds emphasised on the different stages of fan noise in the voice segment. Which second of fan noise emited corresponds to your consoles? And which SKU of console are you owning? 20/60 40/80, Launch/Recently bought etc...

Try to discribe your fan nose from a point of level with regards to the mp3.

Thanks!

Yeah Tj, you're presumably right to the extent of logical assumptions. But if you listen to the mp3 you'll probably notice level3 in the 16-17th second, isn't that level of noise too much from a console?

When the PS3 fan stayed at Level 3 it was probably because who ever did the recording was booting up a game. It will do that. If you weren't, then it must be your room temp or your PS3, because my PS3 is an 80gb model and when I start it up after not playing it for a good while it stays at Level 1, not counting the loading game process.

I have the 60gb. I mean the Heat/Air Conditioning in my house. If my room temperature is 65 degrees, the fan is likely to be dead silent. If the room temperature is 80 degrees, the fan will be loud. It also depends on how much space you give it to breath.

it depends where your PS3 is.

The people who don't hear anything are most likely:

Far enough from it.

Have plenty of ventilation and free space in the room.

In a basement or cellar where it's cooler and spacious.

Now for me PS3 starts out quiet, if F@H is on it go to its loudest setting (I have the 60gb Chinese version from Launch). This setting is still quieter than the 360. After that it gets to lower settings which are still discernable. BTW My PS3 has the minimum amount of space for ventilation and I am about 1-2 ft away from it.

It's normal you're fine.

Mate, do you really need to use words of that sort in your question? By and large they are used in the correct context, but they are unnecessary nonetheless. There's a name for people who use inappropriately complex words, but I can't remember what it's called. Some people don't know what those words mean. I mean 'aurally discernable' is correct, but 'can hear it' would be more than enough...Not bashing you for the use, it's good you know it, but some younger members wouldn't have a scooby at what your banging your gums about.

And I can hear my fan. It's dead quiet, but not silent.

Yeah I get you.

Mine starts off silent which I indicated initally but it takes time before it advances up to level3 when it's idle. But alot of the phenomena present may be due to the temprature at my place, however it gets to level3 alot faster when gaming. But I still don't know how to made solid conclusions based on its behaviour.

Once I tried leaving the balcony open in an attempt to decrease the amount of temprature amidst the place, and it stayed fairly quiet during movie playback but as I closed the door and the heat settled it went to level3.

So conclusively you guys say it's dependant of how the temprature acts within ones place?

Haha, yeah you're presumably right. I guess I opt to describe things far too explicitly :)

Can you hear yours? Is it dead quiet at the same time not silent? How does that merge? :)

After a few hours of playing Burnout Paradise I can hear mine from a few feet away. I'm going ahead & purchasing a liquid cooling kit after my 1 year warranty runs out. My cousin got one for his overheating PS3 & the fan was never heard of again.

I barely hear mine... of course, I think my 360 fan damaged my hearing.

But seriously, it's quieter than my PC and I've got really good/quiet fans in this box. It's one of many things I've been very impressed with so far.

I've had four PS3's. Every single one of them has noticible fan noise that gets louder the longer the PS3 is on. I don't believe there are silent PS3's. If there was then it's highly likely one of the four I've owned would've been silent. I've tried them horizontal and vertical and in an open space.

I think either...

A) You who say you can't here the fan are deaf and need a hearing aid

B) Your a hardcore PS3 fanboy and you say your PS3 is completely silent because the 360 gets crap for being loud

C) Your fans and/or heat-sink inside your PS3 ain't working right

It is not a flaw. The Ps3 is very quiet, but not perfectly quiet. The PAL 60GB are the worst for that. Get a 40 GB is it really bothers you, as those are completely silent.

I'd say you're being fairly picky. If you want loud, use an xbox. It's like a plane engine.

I bought a 40Gig PS3 on Friday to watch BlueRay movies.

It sits in a well ventilated cabinet, with plenty of space around it.

Unfortunatley, the noise is really noticeable - really disturbs the atmosphere when watching a movie.

Should I take it back to JB and swap it, OR should I ring Sony.

No point swapping it if all the models will do the same thing, whereas Sony might have a fix for it?

A lot of people say the 40 gig is quiet - but I can tell you mine is pretty loud.

I also have a 360, and it is quieter (unless it is spinning a disc, in which case it is louder).

My console is stationed next to my TV, of course. I usually sit about 4 ft. away from it, can't really hear the fan.

I've also watched blu-ray on my PS3, still no sound of the fan.

The only sound I've ever heard is a spinning disc (when the game is loading).

Haha, yeah you're presumably right. I guess I opt to describe things far too explicitly :)

Can you hear yours? Is it dead quiet at the same time not silent? How does that merge? :)

I can hear the fan all the time, and it gets noisier the longer the PS3 stays on, but it's not so loud that it annoys me. I own a PAL 60GB SKU btw.

I can only hear mine (With the volume down quite low) on a 30c+ day. Otherwise I have to within 30cms to hear it.

Apart from the 360 and your PC, have you hear any fan noise being emited from your PS3 under any regard? Which iteration of console have you got?
