Yes, cartridges were expensive, but a television was expensive too those days . And the point is, a game is worth next to nothing when you sell it after a year or so . Some keep their value, but not many . Try selling a second hand PS3 with 20 games . They aren't worth anything anymore .

My opinion only relates to Australia, we pay about double what the US pays for their games so we pay too much, their US$60 average is a good price though.

After doing a quick currency conversion, 70 quid is what I typically would have to pay in store for new release games over here though

i remember seeing the game Wetrix for the n64 at eb for $119.95AU years back, now in australia the best time to buy games is usually new release from JB hifi, after that if u didnt get the game, just wait till u can find a second hand copy or jump on ebay.

I say yes. Tis why I rock the greatest hits usually. Most i've ever spent on a game was like 50, and that was a pc game I still play from time to time today.

But if people will buy the game at that price they will continue to sell it at that price.

$60 dollars isn't expensive.. games are actually one of the few things that have gone down in price over the years.. it just seems more expensive because cost of living has gotten so high in most places

starting shopping on the web :)

or buy second hand games :P

bobbleheadrogue
Yeah me 2; it is still expensive for me because of the import but it is more cheaper than buying games in Panama. Almost all games go from 70 to 80 bucks and it is hard that those games get their prices down. GoW Collection is 50 here; I'm importing it and it is like 38 dollars. Quite a difference indeed.

You think thats expensive eh? lucky you to not live in Brazil, a U$60 game would cost around 108 BRL but then they add the importing tax plus more to profit in here. At a store u get it for about 250 BRL and 150-160 BRL (for a recently released game) at our "ebay". :(

Edit: Oh yeah guess what, a PS3 Slim in here costed me 1170 BRL(644.451 USD!!), Sony plans to officially launch the PS3 in Brazil at a suggested price of 2500 BRL? LOL WTF now thats tax for you -.-.

I'm cheap so yeah I think that $70 is too much. I mean yeah you (i guess) get the graphics and all that but I still think they can atleast lower the price to like $50. But then again I RARELY ever buy games new. Most of the games I buy I usually only pay $20-$45 for.

70 quid = $100 US, which is too much for a game unless it was some fancy box set with extra stuff. The most i spent on a ps3 game was $55 for MW2, and i feel cheated as i found a copy a week later for $40, plus the dlc (map packs) cost $15 each, which i probably won't get ever. Now i shop around for deals, usually buying used or when a game is a Greatest Hit.

Doesn't bother me, If you like the game then you'll fork out the 70 bucks otherwise just go out and rent it for a week.

the time it takes to make a game these days paying up to and over 100 people salary for 2 - 5 years PoisoN_Facecam0
The same could be said of a film, but they don't cost £70. Even if you go to the cinema and buy the DVD or Blu-ray.

its not.. and anyone who remembers the cartridge days will agree with me... and considering the time it takes to make a game these days paying up to and over 100 people salary for 2 - 5 years without any profit its not to much to ask 70 dollars for a game...PoisoN_Facecam0
the prices vary from country to country like in singapore i remember games were 130$ ish but if i compared it to a british game say like the game i got today which was 30 pounds then that would be like 80$ in singapore, what you will find is games are cheaper in america. i found this out from every time i travel cos its such a pain to be paying 2 times as much for a game when in another country i saw it for half the price. i think they should have 1 flat price rather than a variation like 1 specific price no more no less cos if a company that spends 5 years on a game can sell it for say 70$ then a company that spends 3 years shouldnt be selling their game for 80$ or 90$ thats just not right

Max price for a game should be £35. The best, best games would get away with £37, and the max for an average game would be £32.

I love the spoiled video gamers' sense of monetary entitlement.

People spend money and lots of tme to make these games. If you buy it you will likely put anywhere from 25-60 hours into it, maybe more maybe less. Either way that's far more than a movie. More than a book. More than a sports event. More than most if not all activities that are considered entertainment. But you still can complain that it's too much money. Too much to spend for literally days or weeks of entertainment.

Maybe, just maybe, instead of having to buy every second title that comes out, you can do what responsible mature adults in the real world do with this and every other decision they make. Accept that while your hobby may be expensive in a relative term, it's not in contrast to what goes into it an what you get from it. It's actually very cheap when you think about it. Then decide which game you want the most and buy that one. And quit complaining.

Also this; http://www.cracked.com/article_18571_5-reasons-its-still-not-cool-to-admit-youre-gamer.html

You must have been buying at the worst places.

Where I come from new games start at around US$65.00, then drop over time. 1 year old games (which are common) are priced at an average of US$45.00, and oldies (2yrs+; yep the stores here can continue keeping such games on their shelves) go as low as US$20.00.

I just wait for the games to go down in price. I buy everything from Amazon. I think I paid $55 for one game right when it came out, but most of my games I get for $15 - $40. They're still just as fun even if you don't buy them on release day. I only buy them right away if it's something I'm extremely excited about.

I don't think $60 is an unfair price. You pay $10 for a DVD and watch it in one evening. With most games, I can play them every night for a couple of weeks.

Jackc8

Pretty much what I was thinking.

Sorry if someone has made this point (I don't feel like reading 5 pages) But all games are priced this way, except for wii games but they are still at the $55-$60 here in Canada. So if you are comparing this to other gaming machines, I say that the PS3 game prices are justified.

If you are looking at games as a whole, then I think the price is fine in most countries. The one problem I have is that where I live, game prices almost never drop. Call of Duty 4 just got dropped to $55-$60, when modern warfare 2 is $70. I wish game prices would drop quicker but as for a day one release, I think it's fine.

They are getting expensive, that's for sure. I remember ps1 games retailed for $34.99-39.99. Then the N64 came along and games went up to $59.99 to something outrageous like $69.99. So, I understand a lot of the price justification in regards to paying all the people that make the games/production costs, but there's that part of me that knows we get nickel and dimed on top of products that are slightly overpriced. Avatar cost $300 million dollars to make, I believe, and a ticket to see it didn't cost any more than any other 3D flick out there. If the product is good, it will make money.

In New Zealand it's like $120 for a game (Fallout 3 cost me 140). Considering the exchange rate is roughly $0.70US to $1.00NZ it's a rip off.

Australia's prices are very bad aswell. $100 for games that came out in 2009 eg Uncharted 2 and MW2. That why I import from the UK and even with the exchange stuff is like 50-60% cheaper.

Damn right! Current average retail cost in Australian dollars for a new game: $99. Cost of Mortal Kombat in Australia for Sega Megadrive (Genesis) upon release: $140.

Yea but I could pull out that Unreal Tournament 3 was at $130 for ages too. And I would say the average price is more like $110 for new games these days. While the average of nearly every generation beforehand was like $80, thats a huge jump in price considering our currency is worth more than it ever was compared to the major currencies, there is less tax, ie today there is only 10% GST and we don't have tariffs on games anymore while beforehand there were taxes and tariffs which equaled out to be more than 10%. I must say though game prices are coming down because of JB Hifi, places like EB Games and Game, are gettin hammered because they charge over $100 for new games while JB generally sells them for like $79 or even $69 day one of sales, generally there is at least a $31 price difference. Hell even EB games sells their 2nd hand titles for more than brand new copies of games over at JB hifi. I have even had cases of it being cheaper to buy a new game at jb hifi than off ebay. Which is great. I think they are expensive, but places like JB and ebay I think they are reasonable, places like EB games are rediculous and thats why I dont support them anymore. I am more pissed off about how great the gap in pricing is between us and the US is becoming, you can't even use the old excuses anymore. Especially the prices we have to pay for games on the PSN store.

I hope this website can help you when it comes to importing from the UK. It converts prices and shipping fees into Australian dollars and seems to be far cheaper than the average $100 price that Aussies on here have been talking about.

Now that we have taken care of that, get an 18+ rating for your games, please. :P

For the record in the US games are $60. So that's about 41 quid if I did my converting correctly. And I never buy games at $60, I'll get them when they hit $40 or less.

To me a game that would be worth $60 here in the US would be worth it if it is a high calibur game, not one of those obvious short low quality production games that are everywhere these days. Not everyone has the money to be wasting on any game, so being selective makes you more limited on what to buy.

Maybe this should be a blog post , but i'll post it here . 70 bucks for a game is too much . A blu-ray costs 30 bucks . A PS3 game should be 40 quids . Sales of consoles AND software would rise skyhigh . I know games are expensive to make , but70 bucks is just too much . Discuss....

zekere

$70 is only for a few titles, the usual price for a new game is $60, and I prefer that to the $75 - $80+ purchases of the cartridge days.

I have never personally paid more than £40 for any game-PS3 or 360,you obviously aren't shopping around.

I recently bought Uncharted 2 in mint condition-£20.00,Modern Warfare 2-when it was released for £26.00,and every other PS3 game i own for £20 or less.
