Yesterday i went to buy a new copy of Fallout 3, and some salesman told me that in 2 months he will be selling a chip at $300 that will turn the ps3 to run copied bluray games, but no online play.

I am peruvian and i am sick of piracy. I have already spend more than $800 in games and i am proud of it, i would never turn muy PS3 into something illegal.

Thoughts and comments please.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here in Peru, piracy is very common, let me explain , right now the wii and the 360 are hacked and play pirate copies, thats not all, 4 moth ago they hacked the psp-2000 and now the psp-3000 allowing the user to download the games to the memory card instead of buying them. It is a very profitable busines and i know they are not amateurs. These people here create their own hardware, they dont buy a common chip from a chinese factory and modify it (i saw it on tv), I am completely aware of the situation but nothing can be done because sony here has no official ps3 subsidiary so there is no one to go and tell they are selling pirate copies, so no legal measures are taken.

PS3 is being hacked right now in peru and i completely believe it. The same happened to me when i sold my 360, i was about to sell it and a salesman told me that in one moth it will be hacked and he will be seling the chips, anyway i sold it to buy my ps3. And now the same happens, one salesman tells me that in 2 month he will be seling a PS3 chip.

This hole situation is just disappointing, but i`ll continue to buy my originals.

please forgive my english, im not a native speaker.

Many countries sell pirated games. Just don't buy them. If you're really against it, report them to Sony.

With electronics anything can be hacked. That is why they constantly update the firmware to plug up these kinda holes.

Thats one of the reasons why i choose PS3 amongst other consoles (:xI have friends who asked me to buy wii or xbox 360 for the sake of the purpose to play pirated games:evil:). Seriously the piracy issues has made the game developers life difficult, so Sony I give u a big praise for the work to prevent piracy. Hopefully there will be no more piracy issues !!:D

its not only in peru, it also happens here in colombia, and almost all the countries that dont have an official sony subsidiary, also for the big taxes added to the games, thats why i import them, but im not gonna go deeper. like someone said, the ps3 is an electronic, and it can be hacked, and they will sell a chip and pirated games soon, i was wondering why they took so long to hack the ps3, just another proof of why the ps3 is the more reliable system right now, i hope im wrong and ill really be glad if in a near future i see a gamestop or more official sony support in southamerican countries and others that dont have it

Why don't you do your research before you go spouting off about a topic you don't have knowledge of. Even if you don't know anything about modding why would you assume that the PS3 cannot be modded? Every system worth pirating games for has had chips made for them that allow you to play copied games. Modded cases get flagged online all the time. It's only a matter of time before hackers and modders overcome the technologies.

Yeah , here in Brazil the same thing happens.South America FTW lol /sarcasm.Here , if you point at one and say he has a playstation 2 and many pirated games your chances of being right are like 90%.Veeeeery few people have the ps3 ,due to the lack of piracy.Which is inderstandable cuz a single game here costs more than 100$.I forgot the guy who said that the lack of piracy prevents the ps3 from selling , but unfortunatelly in South America that's the case.Anyways I'm a proud owner of the 60gb ps3 and more than 50 games , I'd never support piracy but not everybody have this option

I know many people who bought xbox instead of ps3 because with 160 euros you can play any game that you want and they dont care for online play and instaling games on hard drive. So yes a part of xbox's success is because it can be very easily hacked.

Many countries sell pirated games. Just don't buy them. If you're really against it, report them to Sony.ItsEvolution
Problem is that many countries don't even get them legally in the first place. Take Australia for example. There are many games that Sony will flat out just not sell out there, even when they'd already done all the proper translations, or even for a game that doesn't really need localization. In lieu of this, many stores will basically sell pre-modified consoles and the like because doing so finally enables those players to finally play the games that they've been denying the country over the years. Sony tried to take some of the stores there to Australian court, and the court ruled in favor of the modders because the modifications "enabled choice where there previously was not." So, I'm not saying they're the exact same situation, but I do have a feeling that if the country of Peru is also starved for gaming selection as well, then the local society is simply deciding that they've had enough of being left out and are going with the modchip to get their choice back. It's not that much different from importing games from other regions, except that you're not paying the over-inflated game and shipping rates as you would with just importing. And even importing requires custom hardware most of the time in order to play correctly on your own components.

Theres not much need to talk about the idiots who would choose piracy in this system era. A lot of games have a big portion dedicated to the online, so with those pile of money put to hacking the systems, they're actually losing more because they'll never get the full experience. Come to think of it I think piracy also contributes to why so many games out there has shifted towards online than the single-player experience up from the PS2 gen.

i hope im wrong but sooner or later every system will be hacked, chipped or modded, whatever. like the other guy said a gaming console without online in this gen is totally useless, we have to take in mind a lot of things, updates, DLC, online multiplayer, co-op, well at least for 360 and ps3, dont know about wii since is more a family system, but you get the idea.

and yeah, MS can ban your ip if they found you are playing with a pirate game, but there is already a virtual chip that avoid that not in a 100%, sooner or later you get caught lol.

A modchip does currently exist for the PS3, however I think the audience is for people who want to flash the PS3 bios with homebrew and use it for other purposes besides playing "back up" games.

As an earlier poster mentioned. . .the big minus (besides cheating developers out of lots of money) is chances are high that you will get banned from playing online. MS played dumb and many of the users with DVD firmware moded boxes thought they were getting away until one day MS just started banning pirated boxes. Was really interesting reading how they figured out which boxes were moded. Won't surprise me if Sony is/will do something similar.

Moral of the story, might be fun to be able to play "back up" games and pay little to nothing, but eventually it'll catch up to you and you'll end up with a box that can't go online. Considering how most of the games get patches online and have a strong online component, losing the ability to go online takes away a lot from the PS3.

Thats alot for a chip since games will be expensive still on a BD. I dont understand how smaller countries have such a problem with piracy.
