Okay, so today was the last day for the Gamestop deal, where you traded in two choice of games, to knock off $40 on either Super Mario Galaxy 2, UFC Undisputed 2011, or Red Dead Redemption. So, I had my $20 + $3 for my tax, both of my video games I was trading (Super Smash Bro. Brawl - Wii, Mass Effect 1 - Xbox 360), went to Gamestop, and of course since it's rated M, my dad had to buy it for me, since I'm not old enough. So, of course the stupid cashier lady (that doesn't usually work there) says Red Dead Redemption has EXTREME content, and asked if it was okay for me to buy it, or whatever, but she had to put in that word "extreme". So of course my dad was like, well what do you mean by "extreme"? And she was all like, "Strong sexual content", "Lots of nudity", "Alcohol/Drug references", "Lots of violence",and then she had to say "Made by Rockstar who made GrandTheft Auto series",etc. etc. My parentsthink they know all about the "Grand TheftAuto" games, and how "bad" they are, whenreally they are just another violent game, that everyone thinks is so bad. The only reason they think it's bad is because of the 'Hot Coffee' mod in one of the games, where you could have sex. Now I'm not aloud to have any Grand Theft Auto games, or anything made by Rockstar. (I have Saints Row 2).Now my dad could careless how violent a video game is, and usually he is okay with Alcohol/Drug references, but for some reason, I usually cannot buy a video game with nudity. Don't ask me why, they think I'm some baby, and if I wanted to see nudity so bad, you can search it on the internet, but I know not to do that, since I would get in huge trouble. I guess they don't get that, and don't trust me. I have other games, with the same exact kinds of things, such as God of War III, or Fable II. So my question is, does Red Dead Redemption REALLY have that much nudity in it? Keep in mind, my parents think you can have sex in stuff in games when they say "Strong Sexual Content/Nudity", don't ask me why, I guess the don't get it. A game would be rated "A" or not even rated if you could have sex in it, the only exception is Fable II, which you can have sex in, but it's blacked out, and they let me have the game (not at first but I convinced them). So, do you think this is fair, or should they stop being so strict and let me buy it? I'm going into 9th grade, and they are still overprotective over me... I know a kid in 6th grade who has this game, and his parents are strict as well, so I'm not sure why I couldn't have such a game.

Do the parents of the 6th-grader actually know what they bought him? Do they sit there and watch him play, or do they let it be his babysitter? Maybe they are naive and think every video game is a child's toy, paying no attention to the rating sitting right there on both the front and back of the packaging.

I say good job for the lady at Gamestop, she's doing what she's suppost to. Also you're parents arn not being over-protective, they are being good parents. Its not that they don't trust you, it's just that they want you to get a little older and more mature before you can play it.

I heard there is only one cutscene that has it. (which you can skip)

There nothing like hot coffee or anything interactive I believe.

So no, it's not that bad in that department.

Sounds like a case of responsible salesmanship and good parenting to me. You can enjoy all the M rated games when you reach that age... so until then be patient and play the games that fall under your age jurisdiction. P.S. If I had kids, I wouldn't let them play any Rock Star games....hot coffee mod or not, their games are simply not for kids.

RDR is not necessarily as bad as GTA because you can play the hero, instead of being a bad guy. But of course it does give you the freedom to be the bad guy and there is lots of killing. There is some nudity and a very short sex scene as well that shows partial nudity, it was very short but it's there (I found it totally unnecessary, as it usually is in videogames). Ultimately the game is rated M for a reason, it's only suitable for adults.

The girl at the counter was doing her job and it's really up to your parents to let you play or not. If it was me I wouldn't let kids play this game unitl they were 15 or 16.

it sucks to be a kid, except for when mom and dad buy you anything you want. (not my childhood) there are so many spoiled kids out there and their parents wonder why are they not obedient. Duh IDk, keep buyin him more games to occupy him. well, if its not A-O i really dont see the problem. Strong language about sex, while Strong Language while killing. Hm, Red Dead might need to be purchased buy me. lol

Let's see 9th grade = 14-15 years old. Red Dead Redemption = Mature = 18 year old and up. Yup I can see why you won't get the game.

No there's no extreme nudity or sexual content.

The cashier was just exaggerating. There is some nudity, you got a penis and half exposed breasts, and a sex scene, but you can skip all that.

There is one really bad scene in mexico when you accept a story mission in Mexico, enough to not allow a kid to play the game. In my opinion your parents are just trying to be good parents but you know what I have been playing Video Games since the late 80's early 90's and I'll be 24 in October and I have played violent games and watched violent movies that a kid probably shouldn't watch all my life. All I have to say is it doesn't make you a bad parent to let your kids play violent games and it's doesn't make you a bad parent to not let them but your probably 15 years old now if your going in the 9th grade and to me your parents need to relax and let you live and breath on your own. It does have a lot of nudity and offensive language but doesn't everything? I don't like how violent the world has gotten or how much crap people can get away with on basic cable anymore. I mean they take all Loony Tunes and old Disney Cartoons off the air because they are too violent but they allow Degrassi on Teen Nick? makes no sense. I don't know I'm getting off topic here but in my opinion your 15 dude I'm sure you have seen mostly what TV and Video Games offer when it comes to Adult Content and if your father allows you to play violent games then he is kinda contradicting himself when not allowing you to play RDR or GTA. Also makes no sense.

Sorry, kid. Your parents made poorly informed choices in the past buying you those other games. They are ignorant of what real video games are really about and it's only natural they don't want you playing a game that a Gamestop employee blatantly says is too mature for you.

This shouldn't come as any surprise at all since you stated you would get in "HUGE TROUBLE" for looking at porn on the internet.

And it's M rated because there's a revealing sex scene and of course, the killing and stuff.

Maybe it's just me, but did anyone really read that block of text? And RDR should be rated "M" for mature. It's a violent profane game. And I love it!

ive been playing mature rated games and seein R rated movies since i was around 8 and even though i didnt really understand all the situations i alwasy had a good time with the violence. i dont feel it negativly effected my growth and maturity. i guess my parents just figured i could handle it. nevertheless, the woman was just doing her job you cant really blame her Even though im prolly about halfway through the game and i dont remeber any nudity.

I have other games, with the same exact kinds of things, such as God of War III, or Fable II...

A game would be rated "A" or not even rated if you could have sex in it, the only exception is Fable II, which you can have sex in, but it's blacked out...

Never got to Aphrodite in God of War III huh? Then again you can skip that.

Red Dead Redemption doesn't have any interactive sex scenes. Prostitutes and the like will offer but John will refuse and declare loyalty to his wife each time. Somewhere near the half way point there's a somewhat graphic sex scene but it isn't dire.

If your parents don't want you having the game then that's their business. I'm not one to question parenting, although I have different viewpoints I'm not a parent so it would be ignorant suggestions. I will say though I can see why not being able to play this game would be irritating. Not because I think it's great, but because you have few alternatives. There aren't a lot of Western games out there.

Have you played Uncharted? There's a good Teen alternative.

.. I know a kid in 6th grade who has this game, and his parents are strict as well, so I'm not sure why I couldn't have such a game.

Bsmcclure10
wait what? a 6th grader has it? do me a favor and snatch that game away from him.. no matter how mature they think they are they shouldn't be playing games like that >+> wtf is wrong with his parents,?! if I lived in your hood, I would go over there and give those parents a talk.. and then of course break this game disc... don't know if it's just me but when you get to that age you can play M games you feel like it should only be exclusive to 17 year olds and up if you are mature and don't act like a child then you should be okay with it :o I personally think you'll be fine, since movies today have far more worser conetent... but of course your parents are just being protective and doing it for your own good will :) so at the moment you should really just visit and play older games you haven't and I know it's tough to wait :o believe me I went through that :p but hey it's worth the wait

I played Grand Theft Auto III when I was in 6th grade, hell , my brother who was 7 or 6 at the time played it and we both grew up just fine. I guess that's because my parents put some common sense into us. Young kids can be exposed to mature content if parents do a proper job of keeping them in line.

true true, and it also depends on the kid's maturity level only a small percentage of kids that play M rated games are mature about it.. but the problem is that not alot of parents do a proper job of monitoring kids on what they play.. some are just clueless or don't even care.. :\ need to raise awarness , atm only can trust that gamestop employee's do their jobs

It has one single sex scene showing the full deal nudity and all at the start of one of the missions. It lasts for a mere 10 seconds and can be skipped with the press of a button. The rest is everything you'd expect from the good old wild west game. Nothing extreme like the cashier told you. Sure you see lots of blood splatter all over the screen when you skin dead animals for there meat to sell. I see nothing wrong with it tbh.

The way I see it. Parents are more ignorant now than they were before. I played violent games since I was around 5, my parents raised me right, even though I was doing fatalities on the original Mortal Kombat. I just think this generation of younger people and their parents are just straight up morons, where TV and internet teaches them instead of actual values that make people decent human beings. Its no wonder our government feels like they got to step in and "raise" our kids.

It's rated M for a reason, and your parents are smart to not let you play it. I think you're more mad that your parents found out the truth, not that they're laying down their rules

i know a parent who doesnt let there kids play videos games at all, reguardless of ratings and i know other who gets her 12 years old daughter a tattoo for her birthday. Its not whether the cashier or your parents were wrong, as children really dont get a say in such matters.

Listen man all parents are a different im 19 now so it doesnt matter but i remember when i was younger my parents never gave a damn about what kind of video games i played, they know they're video games and they know im not gonna get influenced to kill people because i kill people in video games. other parents see it as bad influence to let their children play violent games. i guess the point im trying to get to is that there is not right or wrong answer about this subject but its just the way people raise their kids.

I say good job for the lady at Gamestop, she's doing what she's suppost to. Also you're parents arn not being over-protective, they are being good parents. Its not that they don't trust you, it's just that they want you to get a little older and more mature before you can play it.

agpickle
Totally agree. She IS trying to do her job... she knows parents aren't too informative when it comes to games so she brought up a game they probably knew of in relation to it. The only game my parents didn't let me get (in this case rent) was vigilante 8 when i was in grade school around 4th grade or so. It was because of the teen rating.. but i was like whatever and got a different game.. My parents have always been cool with me getting rated M games. Now im almost 19 so i can buy them myself now so its not such a hassle. ANYWAY, yeah if your parents don't think you are mature enough to handle a video game with nudity in it, then you aren't. That's pretty much how life goes until you hit 17 or 18 bud.. To be honest though.. I haven't seen any nudity in the game yet.. must be a mission with crazy amount of boobies or something lol.

If you're not old enough to buy the game you shouldn't be playing it... simple as that.. and if you're not smart enough to get it on your own you shouldn't be playing it...

I haven't come across any full frontal nudity or anything of the sort (not that I'm looking for it :P) but if it says it on the box, then there must be something likewise in there (I haven't really gotten far into the game yet, TBH). I mean, yes, this is a Rockstar game, which means two things: it's a top quality game, and it has lots of adult stuff in it ;). Chances are, if a parent forbids their child to buy that sort of game, believe me, it's for the best (I sure as hell won't let my 11 year old cousin pop in GTA IV, much less this game, when she wants to play videogames).

Good job gamestop!

if you aint old enough to play it, and the woman knows your dad is buying it for YOU. then she SHOULD warn him about it.

however mis-informed she might be as to the actual content, it has a rating for a reason.

do you also **** about not being allowed to see certain movies at the theatre?

Gamestop (and other shops) have a duty to make sure that parents are as informed as possible as to the content of the games their CHILDREN are playing!

I'm with OP, he's probably 14-15, I was playing M games at that age. I got my parents to understand it was just a GAME. Just tell your parents about the game and they might let you get it. I think the ESRB ratings are for the most part BS, I think they're fairly discriminatory. If you feel you are old enough to play a GAME, i think you should be able to.

Also stop calling him a child, he is a teenager.

Ratings are pathetic anyways. Most adults have no idea what is or isn't going to be okay for their kids. I'm 15, I've played this game, nothing wrong with it. Unless you have some kind of mental condition.

EDIT: As for what I think would be an acceptable rating scheme:

General

Teen (13+)

Mature (16+)

You can play/watch anything legally one age group above your actual one, as long as you have parental/guardian consent.

And quite frankly, sex scenes should be Teen, I don't care if its freaking porn, sex is natural, violence is much worse (comparatively, neither is that bad in a game/movie anyways).
