Hey All...

I know the consensus of users and posters here are considerably younger than me, and I get the "instant gratification" that FPS's deliver. Hell, I play/have played quite a few of them myself -- and I do enjoy them sporadically.FEAR, Farcry and Half-Life 2 (that one, I've played through three times) on the PC; I just finished The Darkness on the PS3; and am currently playing both RE4 and Metroid Prime 3 on the Wii). I've got to ask though, where does it end (or at least mix it up a little)?

Looking at upcoming release titles, nearly 80% of them are shooters (this is an estimate, so relax)! How is it that the gaming public is continually riveted by the concept of "run, duck, stand-up, shoot, duck again, run some more, shoot some more... rinse and repeat"? Sure, some of them have great storylines, and the graphics are beautiful, I get that. The action is there and there's multiplayer, I get that, too... but doesn't anybody else feel the same way that I do? There's no depth, and they can get to be pretty damn monotonous, can't they? Mash the crap out of buttons to kill a bunch of guys, and what are you rewarded with? You get to do it all again...

I know I'm asking for it, but I really don't want to turn this in to a flame-fest. Please don't jump all over me citing graphics and storyline and multiplayer and what not (I can hear it now... "Dude, yer a dumb-f#&%! Haven't u seen the sick-ass frame rate on Halo 412? It's hella tight, yo!"). All next-gen shooters have all of that stuff, and that's the first part of my issue... They're all basically the same thing, and the concept is too minimalist -- "Shoot, kill, run". Yeah, yeah, yeah... your solution to my issue: "Don't like em? Then just don't buy 'em, smart-ass!" That's part two to my point... They're all that's being released! Finish one FPS, and all that's new to buy is another FPS! I'm also not trying to encite another bout of Shooter vs. RPG vs. RTS vs. Action genres, because yeah, they can ALL get monotonous.

What it all boils down to I guess, is that I'm just curious if anyone else has logged in to GS over the past several months and is a little put-off by the number of FPS's that the Game Development houses are churning out for the consoles. When are we gonna get some different material?

Anyway, thanks for your opinions and for taking the time to read through my rambling.

- Vern

I like shooters, but i agree with you.

There are too many shooters, most of them are crap or sequels without innovation.

in the middle of the junk that is released each year a innovative and good shooter is rare.

most shooters are different. in some way they differ from eachother.

im not bothered at all with all the shooters come out. its my favorite genre since im an online fps kinda guy.

as long as they come up with new ideas and storys for the shooter games, I dont see a problem with them making so many.

its not like you HAVE to buy them or read up on them. If your not interested, your not interested. I just dont see much of a point in complaining about it really.

Didn't mean to make it seem like such a whining session (but I just re-read my post and realized that that's pretty much all it is). Anyway, my point was just to see if anyone else feels the way that I do about the influx of shooters that are on the release schedule. You'd think that some development houses would do a little more market research, and look to develop a wider selection of game types to compete, rather than just churning out the same product as everybody else. It reminds me of the vendors selling stuff at the border crossings in San Diego... They all sell the exact same stuff. :)

Then again, itIS all about the dollar, and I'm sure that their market research has revealed that shooters are what the majority of the gaming public wants (and I don't fit in to that demographic anymore). I guess I'm just getting too old! :(

I agree, there seems to be too many shooters. Don't get me wrong, after a long, hard day at work, nothing beats pumping lead into a game character, but there seems to be too much of them. Look at the games being hyped for the PS3 and X360, Halo 3and Killzone2, both are FPS's. FPS's seem to be the big "thing" in gaming now, oh well, lets hope we don't end up with "first person shooter mini game collections!" ewww

Games like Bioshock prove that a breath of fresh air is still possible in a FPS. I'm also playing Prime 3 right now and it's focus on adventure makes it feel different as well.

I do agree though. First Person Shooters are a dime a dozen these days and it's only going to get worse as the year goes on. If originality isn't implemented in the genre it will lose popularity enventually. Just like RPGs have gotten a little stale so too will FPSs.

Totally agree! I noticed this the other day. There are a BUNDLE of shooters comming out. I could probably name at least 15 over the 3 consoles comming or tha have come out within the last few months. I love shooters, but I also want some original games. I can't wait for Mario Galaxy just because I know it's going to be a GREAT pretty original game. I will be buying a few shooters this holiday season but alsoI will supposrt the quirky, fun games. We need more like those. LittleBigPlanet seems to be one of those games we desperately need on the PS3.

I'd have to agree... seems like all the "big" games on PS3 so far are shooters... I'd kill for a really good RPG, or just a decent puzzle game... something that's not so "run & gun". I mean, maybe it's just me, but I can only shoot terrorists / aliens / the other team for so long, before it all becomes a bit "samey".

my friend..... i was thinking the exact same thing as i was flipping through my gameinfomer which i just got yesterday....on the front page they were talking about some game called borderline.....2 guesses as to what genre?

don't get wrong there are some sick fps's out there but enough already....personally i think gears of war changed the game....all shooters should take ques from that game. but right now the first person perspective iswhere everything is headed.....haze looks cool and i think it's a ps3 exclusive but c'mon......is there really anything in that game that would be any different from the 100 other sci-shooters this year?......Geezus!

I agree. People complain about them, but they sell well. If they weren't companies wouldn't be inthe business of making them. So, could it be that the majority of people DO like FPS? And people who hate FPS are the minority?

because the dev's are trying to save money because it is the cheapest and easiest gene to make. think about it they don't need a super look me character. the story is easier to think of. they don't need movements or animation really for themean character. they think of a few guns and a few bad guys. it is expensiveto make these games now a days this is the easiest way to budget there money. we all now action and adventure and defiantly rpg are way more expensive to make.

The problem with that is that if Shooters are all that's made - or at least, the majority of what is made - the folks who normally wouldn't buy them have little else to occupy their time and thus...buy the shooter. Sort of a vicious cycle really.

Also, most FPS's don't really venture too far beyond the standard run and gun mentality, yes, even Bioshock and Half Life 2 has a heavy run and gun flow. That's the nature of the genre and the reason why people think all shooters are the same and it's only the enemies that change (unless it's a WWII game). The same could be argued for most RPG's though, as it's also usually a typical kind of setup: villain out to destroy everything, unlikely hero to the rescue, damsel in distress, romance ensues, party forms and destroys the baddies.

There are exceptions in both FPS and RPG's but heck yeah, we need to see more variety in the retail area of the PS3 (the PSN has a nice range, though shooters still dominate there too).

I'm with you all the way mate. I mean I enjoy a decent FPS as much as the next average gamer but I honestly do get a little tired of the rinse-and-repeat style of these games. They're all essentially the same damn game in a new skin. I also think there's a reason yanks obsess over FPS unlike the rest of the world (yes, i'm referencing your crazy gun laws and apparent infatuation with "WAR! Woo Yeah!").

I'd like to see more adventure and RPG games.

mee too all the way i'm tired of so many shooters i want to see the god D*** character for **** sake

a lot of games are very interesting and fun and the character looks good i mean his suit or whatever he has on, his look its great until i read (first person shooter) "o crap i only going to see his suit every hour in a cutscene" this happen to me with crysis he has a hell of a suit and you are only going to see his gun and the shadow of him, i like first person shooters a lot they are realy fun but there are just too many.

Well for me 95 percent of my gaming is done online. I rarely play single player at all and shooters and sports games are best for online. I love shooters and there are some great ones coming. Don't knock shooters you may miss out on some great games

Teyon

Nail on the head, baby... that was my original point. Sure, I'm buying the FPS's, and I KNOW that I don't have to, but hell... what else is out there?

On a side note... I just wanted to take a second to give out a thanks to all of the positive responses I've gotten to this! A lot more than I thought that I would have gotten!! More times than not these forums are "The home of the the flame post", and that's what I was expecting... As per usual the Gamespot forum posters have surprised me! Thanks again!

- Vern

P.S. Thanks as well to the posters with different opinions... I need to hear everybody's reasoning here to get a true answer to my questions.

Point taken, jackle... we're more-or-less reinforcing each other's previous posts. :D I stated roughly the same thing in an earlier post, too -- FPS's are where it's at monetarily right now. I guess I'm just too much of a "Variety Guy". I want something new and different, andI have no other choice but to wait for it.Hopefully this flood of FPS's will spark something with the Developers (i.e., lower profit margins), and they'll mix it up a little. I'm still of the mindset that fewer games of any genre will get us all to want more of them in the future (absence makes the heart grow fonder, right?)

This post kinda summed up why my wanted list for the 360 and PS3 is very small indeed. I just hope the Japanese support picks up soon so I can start buyijng games for the PS3 so it stops gathering dust. I hate FPS and well, 98% of Western games ingeneral really.

Well it's obvious why they sell casual gamers(especially western ones) love to shoot things. Hardcore gamers get into shooters because they love the competition of MP. Myself though, looking back though I find that FPS are never the most memorable experiences in my gaming career. Even the ones touted as "best game of the year" by gamers and journalists alike. GeOW, RFOM, Goldeneye 64, Perfect Dark, Halo have been all been fun but little more than that. Even the recent Bioshock, promised to be a revolutionary FPS/RPG I found to be more of a rehash of System Shock 2, i.e a good shooter with a lot of options. I'm not saying that the genre is fundamentally flawed in any way, it's just my own tastes I guess. Never have I experienced such an immersive atmosphere in a shooter as in Shadow of the Colossus nor have I ever been as interested in the game's characters in a shooter as in Beyond Good & Evil.

TONS of shooters come out, but how many of them are actually worth playing? Its a popular genre with alot of games under its belt but only a handful are memorable, I love shooters but I agree fully. We could use some more fighting games right about now and platform games are far from over, I cant wait until the new Ratchet and Clank comes out. Im missing my rpg's as well, ff13 cant come fast enough.

what bothers me is when they give games lower scores soley cuz they arent fps (they make up stuff like camera angle sucks or control scheme is confusing)

and yes, i personally can only stand one fps per console whihc is a big problem rite now.

I like fps, but I do agree with u about how there are too many of them. Developers just have to remember fps r not the only popular game types. I miss when ps was mostly rpgs and platformers. a balance between all game types would be much more awesome.

Wow this thread was made for me. I'm very annoyed by the amount of shooters coming and those already on shelves. A few of my friends and I spent about two hours today ridiculing the newest Game Informer (the one with Borderland, another shooter that says it does something new,on the cover). They covered their top 50 games of E3 and Call of Duty 4 was number one. It looks like it could be a great game, but it will still just be a beautiful FPS. I can almost say with complete certainty that no one will play it and feel as though they're playing something new. They may think it's awesome (hell I probably will too) but it won't be an original experience by any means.

I like tactical shooters but I will still only play one of those every few years. I've been through every big FPS on the 360 and PS3 since 2005 and I can't help but think most of them were the same. Each adds one new twist but they're all either Halo or Doom. Resistance has great optimization and lagg-less online. Gears has insane brutality and a somewhat tactical cover system. Prey has the special powers. FEAR has slow motion and two or three scary parts. The Darkness has a few special abilities in the form of the Darkness powers. You could buy all of these games and each one would still be basically the same.

I probably won't abandon shooters ever, but there are WAY too many. That genre needs much more than just a new "twist" on each game.

Couldn't agree with you more, one of the main reasons I didn't get an Xbox last generation was because most of their games were FPS, which I don't have any interest in. It's okay if a FPS gets released every once in a while, but not around 4 in a single month ! :S

I'm hoping this stupid FPS trend stops soon, and Playstation starts getting some unique games like they did in the previous generations.
