Why do people say that "the PS3 is selling well for a $600 console" like that means sales are good. Thats kind of like saying " That guy is really smart for a retard Its a backhanded complement and should never be used as one of your arguing points. That being said, sales are a little down from what i expected but I do foresee them getting a lot better in the near future. I think that part of their problem is that they are still making the PS2 a viable platform. Why should people go out and spend that kind of cash on a new system when good games are still coming out on the PS2 and they can play them until the price drops on the PS3. As far as exclusives go, Sony isn't stupid. If the loss of exclusives starts to really hurt their sales, they will start paying for exclusivity rights. Things will get better and everybody will be happy with whatever system they buy because there will be great games and great exclusives on all of the systems.Naseru

Actually, keeping the PS2 in place is the best thing Sony can do. First reason is for parents who want to buy a cheap console for their young kid. If they want to buy a console for their 5 years old kid, they would never buy a PS3, but by keeping the PS2, which has many games for that audience, they get many sales. Not only that, but the bigger game library will only push people to buy more games and thus giving more money to Sony.
Next is people who buy a PS2 now will probably like some series such as MGS or God Of War. They might want to play the sequel of their favorite game eventually. In that sense, it promotes the PS3.
People who get a PS2 now have enough games to keep them busy for a few years without buying a new console. This is good for Sony, because with the current prices, chances are they would buy something else than the PS3. And Sony loses money over each PS3 sold, so it is more profitable for them to sell a PS2.
Every companies care about one thing : making money. The PS2 makes money, unlike the X-Box and GC did, thus Sony will keep it here. If they would cut the PS2, PS3 sales would barely increase, as few people would want to pay 5 times more. All that would happen is that Sony would make less money, which is not what they want.Â
Sony's gaming division needs some income, and the PS2 is a big part of it. For now, I doubt most people repaid with software sales the lost that Sony had to eat when they sold the PS3. Thus they have to keep some income until great games are coming.
