Sometimes the most unexpected news will hit you in the oddest places. That was the case tonight as we sat merrily eating dinner with developers and journalists from around the industry at the Tengu Restaurant in Hollywood, California.

We were coming from a joint Sony, Activision event there in Southern California, when we were told something we definitely weren't ready for.

The discussion at Tengu was fairly simple in its scope: various sources in the press and development team state that Sony is looking to take Rockstar "under their wings". While we learned that any agreement Sony and Take Two entered into would not affect the upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV, such an agreement would presumably affect any future releases from Rockstar, including the new franchise Sony has been discussing and L.A. Noire, which looks likely to be a PS3 exclusive at this point as well.

Rockstar, which is currently a part of Take Two Interactive, has produced several blockbuster franchises, including the Grand Theft Auto series of games, Manhunt and Bully. The studio has become famous for both the games it produces and the controversy surrounding their production. Rockstar has earned itself a reputation however as a developer which is focused on making excellent games, something that many of the studios that make up Sony World Wide Studios are known for.

As with any news this interesting, we must affirm that we trust our sources, but that our sources do not constitute an official confirmation. PSU will report back to all of you when we have more.

Yeah I saw that too, but I can't help but be skeptical about it. Even if it did come out on both consoles, I would get it on the 360 if given the choice. I don't want some lazy port of a potentially great game.

PSU learned while talking to developers at the dinner that Bioshock, the game that won the 2007 Game Critics Award for Best Action game, will be coming to the PS3 sometime in the near future.

BioShock is a title from 2K that fuses a scary atmosphere illustrated with horrific scenes, a deep storyline with an open-ended freedom to interact with anything and anyone, and a gameplay facet which incorporates actual thinking instead of raw gun power and a Hell Mary. Originally announced for all next generation consoles, BioShock appeared to be shaping up into an amazing multiplatform adventure. Soon after on September 26th, 2006, Microsoft announced that BioShock would be "released exclusively to the X-Box 360 and PC platforms this spring" at their X06 event. Soon after, Take Two Interactive released a press statement detailing BioShock's exclusivity: "2K is excited to release BioShock exclusively on Xbox 360 and under the Games for Windows brand on the PC."

There was positive discussion almost to the point of confirmation that this title would hit for the PlayStation 3 next spring. While there have been various sources since X06 that claimed a PS3 version was in development, it would seem not a question of whether it's true at this point, but when it will happen. Despite our confidence in the integrity of our information however, we must emphasize that this is still a rumor, and Take Two has not officially confirmed this with us yet.

This is going to be huge if true.

With Liepzig a week or so away, is this news filtering through about one of the big announcements they said they have to make?

Sony World Wide studios are already the best group of devs in my opinion, adding Rockstar to the fold makes them untouchable.

As long as they don't do an EA/UBI on us all and go all sucky :lol:

I can picture Take Two selling Rockstar to SONY for 3 reasons.

#1:

Rockstar has been developing games on SONY consoles for many years now. Most of their games were built on the PlayStation platform and then ported to other platforms. Generally speaking, Rockstar is a pro-SONY developer in the same way that Bioware is a pro-Microsoft developer. Not every game is exclusive, but most are at least timed exclusives.

Personally, I'd rather have Bioware, but that's just my opinion.

#2:

For as much revenue as Rockstar generates for Take Two, they also bring lots of drama and controversy. For a company that is not doing too well financially (Take Two that is...) this marks a good opportunity for them to cut their losses and save face with shareholders. I think the ban on Manhunt 2 really hurt Rockstar's standing within Take Two...The delay for GTA was just icing on the cake.

So we've made it clear that Rockstar Games is a pro-SONY company and that Rockstar isn't exactly on good terms with Take Two shareholders. I think the point has been made over and over during the last couple of months that SONY needs to get themselves some exclusives. Obviously that problem has been taking care of itself, but wouldn't the acquisition of arguably the most FAMOUS/NOTORIOUS game developer in the market, be news?

SONY has a LOT to gain from making this move if they choose to go that path. It would be a huge boost for PR and marketing.

GTA was a Playstation game and just went multiplat, i dont think its ever been delayed for that long when it was on the Playstation Brand - It 360's fault :roll: and R* they shouldnt have paused production on the PS3 version, they coulve finished it first tbh, because they've only got so little to do, yet with the 360 version, you got extra content :|

I think Sony would accept a lot ...but a manhunt 3? you serious?

Why would they make another manhunt when part 2 got banned everywhere? If they make a part 3 it would be softer than part 2 anyway otherwise that would just get banned to.. Banned faster even because of the higher quality graphics.

But It would be awesome if rockstar is taken "under the wings of Sony" :D

There are very few stories about Rockstar games that couldn't have been avoided if Take Two were stronger toward them.

Not everyone has the money for all 3... But if the GTA franchise being PS3 exclusive will be HUGE. M$ knew that, thats why the spend 50 mil so that the x360 can run it.

In grown up world, money decides, not some crappy speculation of love and loyalty.

First off, they have a $1.89 BILLION loss to cover from manufacturing unreliable P.O.S. hardware that can only flaunt its specs.
