PC games don't charge, but they also don't support anything beyond the actual online gameplay. PSN and XBL have loads more features including their respective storefronts that they have to pay people to maintain and update on a regular basis. I thought paying for XBL was the stupidest idea ever, but after finally signing up I am glad to have it. Its a great service. If Sony implemented some of the features that XBL has as well as XBL does then I'd gladly pay for it. However, I do feel Sony should keep a certain level of access free as to not completely alienate too many players. Care to elaborate on what they offer more that we should pay for ? Steam, has pretty much all the features of xbox live and psn, and ya, it's free. I never said we SHOULD pay for anything. I'm just saying it cost them money to maintain the services, so its not unreasonable for them to want to charge for it. And Steam is a whole other ball of wax. They have thousands of games for sale and they make a killing. If anyone can afford to maintain a free service its them. Steam isn't a necessary service, either.[QUOTE="MrSelf-Destruct"][QUOTE="jack00"] Xbox users have been paying a subscription since the beginning, for them it's "normal", even tho it shouldn't be. Try to tell the people who bought a ps3 for free online that now they will have to pay for it, i'm sorry but that's not going to pass. Online have been free on PC since FOREVER and will continue to be, why should microsoft or sony charge for it ? Give me one good reason, I dare you. (Don't bother telling me "it's cost them money for server bla bla bla, it doesn't cost crap for them).jack00
Lol, you guys are pathetic, you're really going to sell your PS3 and basically give up on console gaming because like $4 a month at most... (I doubt Sony would ever do this, and even if they would, I doubt it would be $50 a year, probably $20 or $25).

Granted, but Steam makes a killing and if their service wasn't free it probably wouldn't be nearly as profitable since people can just get the game straight from its publisher and play it for free anyway. Steam is only necessary for the sake of making Valve money and they offer extra features to make themselves even more appealing. PSN on the other hand is necessary for the sake of playing the games at all. There's no other option.dk00111
here in Finland it costs 70 euros to buy a new ps3 game. I'll be damned if that would not cover the cost of playing that game online. Oh well, the rich get richer and so forth..
Wouldn't sell my ps3 though, love it over the other possibilities (consoles), and I still have my PC. But like so many already have pointed out, it is a huge selling point for sony that it is free. Dunno, they have to calculate a little to see if it would be effective (lost console sales vs. money they get from subscription to play online).

You don't have to pay them anything. Sony actually lost billions of dollars from the PS3 in the beginning of this gen
What no one saw was that the article was dated Feb 2, 2010. I think this is the speculation that followed with the announcement of PSN+.
If Sony decided to in the future charge all users for PSN, then they'd seriously have to offer everything, if not more of what XBL offers, else I can honestly say that I'm switching consoles. If I have to pay for it, I want the best online experience. I'm not bashing the PS3 online service or anything, but I want what my dollar pays for. PSN+ has great ideas like offering free game downloads and early beta access and stuff, but if PSN becomes a paid subscription for every user, I can't say I'd want to pay the mandatory fee for just that small aspect.
The one reason I bought a PS3 over the Xbox is so that I could play my games online for free. I would have gotten and Xbox if live were cheaper, but it's 60 bucks a year which to me isn't worth it. I can buy a brand new game for that much and it will last me forever. I still have games for the NES and play them.
If PS3 starts to charge me money, if it's 50+ a year, I'll just switch to Xbox and pay the same amount but also be able to play games and talk to my friends. Seriously, all my friends have xbox, and the reason I don't is so I don't have to pay.
I won't be the only customer they lose from this.
Oh thanks for fighting for our freedoms hackers.......... Ironic its taking away our freedoms. DRM, online fees.... great.hotfireeThis has nothing to do with hackers or freedom at all. Its about revenue.
PS3 has a large enough player base to charge a MSF and still retain enough customers to make a huge profit.
People can complain about paying but the fact is that it takes a lot of school, people, and hard work to make a game. Its a very competitive market, and a risky investment that follows the dollar. The more time and money put into a project, the higher the quality of the product. The PSN will charge because it will help the industry grow and vast majority of consumers will continue to buy.
The dollar you give to any gaming company is an investment that gets returned to the product, not something that gets shredded and put into a salad bowl for some fat corporate emperor to eat for lunch. Its economics and business, not charity and good will garage programmers doing this on a 10/hr pay rate and our games are better because of it.

Dammit, Ninja_Zombie. :lol:Oh...we're not in 2010 anymore ... *runs away* Come back here and read this calendar! :PI always figured Sony wouldn't charge for online until they moved into 2nd place, or until the PS4. I'd be surprised if they do it before, since it's one of the main selling points of the PS3 against the Xbox.
I'll never pay to play online, never paid for XBL gold and never will pay for XBL gold or PSN. If they charge I would only use my PS3 for games I'm mainly interested in local MP / SP and play on my PC, where we have a better service (Steam) for free -.-' Oh and sorry for the references to PC/x360, I know it's the PS3 board here, but I just had to include it to explain my point on how I see it
If they charge for online multiplayer then I will never use online multiplayer on the PS3 ever again. Screw them. I don't have Xbox Live gold for that reason. Sony wants to charge for online too? Fine. Don't expect to get my money though.
However, if instead they charge online for used players then I'm fine with that. THQ and EA do that. No argument with me. Just don't penalize all players with a subscription fee.

That is $50 to $60 I could use to buy another game instead of paying for online. We already money for games. We play on the developers servers not the console company's. This is why some games have lag and others do not. If a game has both singleplayer and online, then to me it seems I am already paying for online $30 for the singlplayer and $30 for online, I don't need other charges. If a console company wants to charge extra for features that are not directly part of the game like cross game chat, in game music and the like, then fine. But charging just to play games online when people already pay the developer for the service is not right. If Sony ever ends up using the Microsoft model for their online, then I want Sony to help make sure that no lag happens on any game, or that there is absolutely no problems with server connections or anything else. If I am going to pay for it, then I want it flawless.
That article and that video are nearly a year old now? They where probably referring to Playstation Plus. An DC Universe is an MMORPG, it's normal for those games to have monthly fees.
The only thing I could say for certain is that it would give me another reason to upgrade my PC and limit consoles to single player. I much prefer the community and responsiveness of PC controlsover consoles, but the cost of it is delaying my upgrade of it. There are already enough PC games I want to play that my comp can't handle anymore, so it would be worth it me. I've already decided to not renew my Gold subsciption after the announcement of the cost increase justout of principle. I refuse to pay anymore money nowto play games I've already paid for when I can play them for free elsewhere whilst having a superior experience.
i dont ever play online so i dont care. as long as i can update my ps3,patch my games and have the abilty to buy expansions, dlc ect with out being charged for the prevlige of spending mony or getting fix's for bugs ect in games i already payed for then im fine. how ever if they try and make me pay for thise things they can go stuff them selves. no way am i going to pay for the ablity to spend even more mony on psn games, dlc ect or pay for the game patchs ect that fix a product that i already payed for. that would be just BS. it would be like wallmart chargeing a door fee just so you could shop in there stores.no F'n way lol. i already pay 50+ bucks for internet as it is.
I would easily drop $50/year on PSN is they did four little things:
> Cross Game Voice Chat
> In Game XMB
> Ability To Listen To Music During Gameplay
> Less Lag And Crashes
Do that, and I am sold.

If people have less free money to spend, they will buy less games, and Sony will lose that money on the game licensing. I don't understand why you think that a subscription fee paid to Sony would go to game developers?Dear god... My friends make fun of the PS3 enough already, I couldn't imagine what it would be like if Sony started charging.
You should make fun of them for not having one. "You can't play Uncharted or Killzone? BAHAHAHA!" :PDear god... My friends make fun of the PS3 enough already, I couldn't imagine what it would be like if Sony started charging.

lol I'm happy I'll still have free PS3 online...now PS4 online is another story. getyeryayasoutHopefully one we won't hear (I still stay 2012) but if it happens, I'll bite the bullet... kicking and screaming... I'll bite it.
I'm not going to pay money to buy things off PSN.
That whole claim that it's "cannibalizing" is a load of crap. They'll just claim more BS to justify it. It's as if chopping up games and making people pay full game price for 60% of it wasn't enough. It's nothing but greed. You can't even logically justify it.

Eh.... you still sparked an interesting conversation. It's just a small error, no big deal.
Sony would be giving away a prime reason why people buy their console.
Yes, they could make more money, but it's one thing they have over the console contenders. Hell, it's the reason why I bought a PS3.
Agreed. I'm not usually to one to say it but back in the good ol' days(anything before this gen) developers put out a game with 100% of the content that it was ever going to get. That was it, they had one shot. Sure, some games saw re-releases or got more content when put on a different platform, but it wasn't some BS like "Oh, BTW here's the rest of the game just pay an additional $10, $15, $20 whatever we can charge! MAWHAHAHA!" For Christ's sakes, to have to an actual "full" game now, can easily run you $80-$100 with DLC. You don't have to pay, but publishers/developers know more than enough people don't have any value of money and they'll be more than happy to drop $15 on a mere map pack. I really have a hard time believing publishers are losing money with it comes to online games. If $60 a pop isn't enough for them, consider me done with online gaming.I'm not going to pay money to buy things off PSN.

If they charged for online, I think they'd more than make up for the few customers they lose, XBL online prices don't really hurt sales.
