Guess that fairly much settles that.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Hirai said, "We want to promote games only available for PlayStation 3. This stays very much on-message with statements made late last year by Sony Computer Entertainment (UK) managing director Ray Maguire "When we launched, we said we would focus on forward production than backwards-compatibility, but there was more of a need for backwards-compatibility six months ago. So, from here on in, there are no plans for backwards-compatibility in PlayStation products."

I still don't get why thay don't just stick with the software BC. It doesn't cost them anything...and if it's that big a deal stop releasing updates but don't scrap the thing all together.

How else are they going to re-sell all those old titles over the PSN?

Why give it away when people will pay.

I doubt it is about production costs, Sony just wants to move forward. Besides, getting a PS2 isn't hard, if you're still into your PS2 games. I have a 60g and can play all my PS2 and PS1 games on it without a problem, but I bought a PS3 for PS3 games. BC was merely a bonus, one which I rarely use. Last Ps2 game I played was FFXII, about 4 or 5 months ago.

For what? By that time, you'll be playin God of War VI on your PS4.

BC is over rated. Games continue, keep your favorites and whichever consoles you need to run them, if it's that important. Out of all systems, Sony is still the one with the best record for BC, so we really can't complain. Let's move forward people, not backwards.

There has never been a software only BC solution - even the 80gb uses internal hardware that costs money. In addition people buying $20 ps2 games vs. $60 ps3 games......which do you think Sony prefers?

I dont even own a PS2 game so I dont care. BC what to say. I'd rather play new games on my PS3 and if there was a game I really wanted to play on PS2 I would have bought one by now. My wii has BC and I've used it about two times. I've already bought/played all the original GC games on that system.

I'm not going to defend Sony on this one. Maybe you guys don't like BC or would rather have two PlayStation products taking up desk space, but I don't. I love playing the old games from the PS store and popping in a PS2 game once in a while. It's honestly giving me something to do while I wait for new stuff to come out.

My PS2 is gone and next generation I don't want one console just for old games.

I think the bottom line is money.

PS2 is still alive and makes a lot of money. They want to sell PS2 stuffs & PS3 stuffs in parallel.

the HD transition would still take a few years. Before the transition is over, PS2 would still be around to help Sony make up the loss from PS3.

I would not be surprise when Sony stops PS2 production a few years down the road, they may as well offer a software only PS2 emulation through firmware updates and start selling PS2 titles on PSN. by then, they may even have PSP 2 that can play PS1 & PS2 PSN games.

If you read this...

And focus on the part of this statement that says "Playstation products", it sounds like the next platform might be called something else other than PS4 and BC will be maintained.

So, from here on in, there are no plans for backwards-compatibility in PlayStation products."Yuck_Too

Ok. this is pissingme off. When will you understand that the PS1 games on PSn are PS3 format and PSP at the same time!! I don't think that PSP has BC for PS1 games!

Jesus! AND!! IT'S FURTHER PS PRODUCTS! Where the hell in the article you read " Current PS producst will be updated and in this update we will cut BC"

I'm not seeing ANYBODY playing FF7 in PS4 or 5. Get over it!

If you hold onto your older system, playing older titles should not be an issue...and if you have an up to date computer you can also play older titles via emulation software...tryfe_lyn

As long as my ps3 doesnt break, my ps1 and ps2 both did.

You can still get the 60b online which means that for people that think BC is important there will be almost 1 1/2 year opportunity to get the BC. At some point it makes sense to cut the overall production cost and move forward without BC. The compromise from Sony was to provide it for awhile - the compromise from the consumer had to be not waiting 2 years to buy the PS3.

Now the "era" of compromissing is "over" (80gb still supports large scale BC) and Sony will move forward for the rest of their consumers. You can't sit around with your thumbs up your a** to save money and then complain when you arrive at the buffet table and all the goodies are gone.

Time to move on or buy one of the last 60gb's out there. It is like buying a cheaper car and b**** about the lack of leather......buy the expensive car if you want the leather

For all of those that are negative towards BC consider this. If by the time the PS4 (or what ever they decide to call it) comes out and Sony decide to scrap BC completely then that is their perogative. However unless they launch the next, next gen console with a s*** hot games catlalogue and not the half a$$ed one we got with the PS3 it will do serious damge to its initial sales.

The PS3 struggled (sales wise) in its early days. Q. Main reason? A. Not enough GOOD games to launch it with. In the early days of being a PS3 owner I found myself playing a lot more PS2 games on my PS3 than I did PS3 games because there simply wasn't enough good PS3 games. I'd wager I wasn't on my own

The PS2 didn't have this problem because they launched with a better games catalogue not bigger just better.

In conclusion if Sony decide to scrap BC then they better have the games to back it up when the fith version of a playstation console comes around. If they don't well if you thought the initial PS3 sales where bad...................................

Sony would be stupid not to make sure the PS4 has a stong launch lineup if they were going to get rid of BC altogether. That's just common since. It's looking more and more like Sony ultimately wants to go the route of putting PS2, and PS1 games up for download on the PSN in the future. Is that something that alot of of you would be ok with? Me personal that's fine with me as long as there at a good price point. This would give gamers a perfect opportunity to play older PS2, or PS1 games that they might have missed out on.

It's certainly a convenience to not have to have 2 systems in front of the tv, but not a big deal to remove it.

You want to play the old games, buy the corresponding system or pay a bit more for a 20/60/80.

Backwards compatibilty is so overated. If you want to play your PS2 games that badly, perhaps you are not ready for a PS3. I have a 60 Gig and I never play PS2 games on my PS3. PS2 is dead to me. I waited a long time for PS3 and I am only looking forward.

Sad to say, but that just screams money hungry. Think about it for a minute. You have 2 kinds of people starting out on the ps2 games these days. Ones who look ahead, and get a 80gig ps3, and then theres those who get simply a ps2 and wait it out. Though apparently now, all a person can do is buy them both once the next generation of systems comes out. There won't be one solution to it. Makes me think that they'll discontinue the 80gig someday. But considering sony is actually MAKING money off of it, they might not.

But apparently, the psp is going the same way. If the rumors are true and all games are memory stick based, there probably won't be a umd drive in it. More reasonable on it though, since the umd never has been that great of a medium.

So cause YOU say, then it should be right? Just cause you don't play PS2 games, everybody should follow you right? If not, they "aren't ready for a PS3". That's the dumbest comment I've ever read. I happen to like BC on my PS3. It suits me just fine. I play whatever game I feel like, PS1/PS2 or PS3. BC on PS3 just makes it easier.

Didn't anybody read this guy's article. It says that Sony is looking for people to work on BC for PS3 and a possible next gen platform which could be PS4. If this is true, then BC will be in PS4 and may still be worked on for PS3.

But BC is probably still in the back of Sony's mind, however I think they will still keep BC to some degree.

I take it you don't play Guitar Hero 1, 2, Rock the 80's. If you did then you'd keep your PS2 hooked up. I have an 80GB PS3 and still keep the PS2 hooked up to play those games.

I take it you don't play Guitar Hero 1, 2, Rock the 80's. If you did then you'd keep your PS2 hooked up. I have an 80GB PS3 and still keep the PS2 hooked up to play those games.

Yeah you go me there. I don't play those three games. Other than those three however, it makes sense for Sony to continue supporting BC. If Sony wants their machine to be the all-in-one magic machine they intended, they should allow me to play old-gen games.

This is why i picked up a 60 gig while i still could, im sure bc will come back later on when sony realizes having no bc pisses people off.TerroRizing

Yes, I agree with you. They will see that is a mistake. Whatever the case is, why we continue to talk about the next-gen consoles is beyond me, we will deal with it when the times comes people.

I never understood why people (or at least my friends) where so mad about the new 40gb ps3 having no BC, we have to move forward... if you want to play ps3 games buy a ps3 and if you want to play ps2 games... well BUY A PS2! :P
