You all sound like a bunch of judgmental douche bags. Every response is typical and a good indicator that you're a product of society that conforms to one way. If it makes him happy then I say go for it.

i actually like your point, and to an extent agree with it (minus the insults).
but it is somewhat naive...
Yes, on the most basic of levels, beyond all of the superficial **** that blinds and enslaves us (i.e ideals, culture, politics, finances, etc.), our happiness is what should truly matter. and ultimately, it's a person's decision how he wants to live his life; whether I or anyone else agree with that decision or not.
But unfortunately, we DO live in a society. A Society that forces the "average guy" to bust his @$$ in order to earn a living (which often involves getting an education first), and pay up if he want to be entertained. This is something that simply can't be ignored; no matter what your philosophy is on the matter. You can't just live in your own little world, cutting yourself off from society's ways, and expect to be happy forever; especially if you're already at the "college" age.
Even if this guy will enjoy his time-off (and i hope he does), he will still be forced to abide to society's structure if he wants to hold on to that happiness (which for all intents and purposes could also be superficial). Only now, he would have wasted an entire year that he could have used to help set his future in order... like it or not, that's the way things are. and if that sounds like line from someone who's a byproduct of society, then so be it...
With all of that said, it's entirely possible that this guy's circumstances allow him take considerable time off to play games, but if not, for his future happiness's sake, i hope he'll reconsider...
My intention was not to insult, but more of a "giving you a hard time" remark. I am not an angry person so sorry if it comes across that way. I agree with what your saying except the part about how we must abide to the structure. That structure has been constantly drilling us from an early age to go a specific path.(school, more school, job, savings, retirement and then death) This path is what keeps the economy going and is suggested as the only path to happiness.
I see unhappiness in people everywhere I go, so obviously we are doing something wrong. The majority of the people attach themselves to labels and considers success based ontheir job title and how much crap they can collect. It's pretty evident that the people who choose to step outside the norm are drilled for it because it's different then howwe are told to live.
yes, that's true. (please read if you can)
a lot of people do indeed suffer due to our society's structure. In reality, who wants to go to school, get an education only to work 9-to-5, 5 days a week (some work even more), almost every week in the year, just that by the time you're old and crusty you'll have enough money to eat and bury yourself. I know that's overly generalized, but it's roughly what our society expects us to do.
so naturally, that kind of "set" lifestyle could bring a lot of unhappiness to people (obviously there are other factors that may contribute to that unhappiness, but let's just stick with "society" for now). But that's the structure we have, and there's nothing we can do about it if we want to live in the US. Sure, people can escape the clutches of society if they achieve financial independence (if you're unfamiliar at the term, it basically means that you've amassed enough wealth to not have work a single day or rely on government/social handouts for the rest of your life)... but unfortunately, only a handful of people will ever reach such a level in their entire lifetime.
Now let's ask ourselves what "happiness" is. Specifically, it could be anything. From collecting rocks to having a nice home to live in. Or maybe all you really need to be truly happy is to have "peace of mind". But no matter what it it that makes you enjoy life, you will always need money (even if earning that money doesn't make you happy). Bottom line is, any sort of happiness must be financially funded; even if that funding is indirect. If playing games is your source of happiness, then you better have the necessary income; not only to afford the obvious expenses on gaming, but also to provide a roof over your head and food in stomach. Because how happy are you going to be if you have no place to live and nothing to eat; let alone, how the hell are you ever going going to game in the first place? I know that's kind of an extreme example, but money is tied to everything. It is the blood of this society (people are probably the soul), and if you want to even be remotely happy, then you better have some.
I realize that it's kind of ironic that if you want to to be happy, you must often engage in activities that make you miserable.
But if that happiness is important (and unless you reach financial independence) you better believe you'll be abiding to society's structure. Well... you can always move to a different country that has a slightly more favorable structure or participate in the criminal world (but i can't really say how happy you'll be swimming in that ****...)
So to wrap things up, yes, our society is flawed. Lot's of people are unhappy with their lives, and some are so miserable that they've long forgotten the happiness that made them strive in today's society in the first place. The happiness that many do have, more often than not, is tied with materialistic goods and the general economy. And like i said before: unfortunately, this is the structure that we have... and one can only hope that if it'll ever change, it will be for the better... but, it at the very least, it functions; even if you're in the middle (or even ihn the bottom) your entire life, you can still live and theoretically be happy about "something". And that's not something every society can offer...
So if you want to break the mold, and gain that financial independence, the least that you can do start building for your future by getting an education and widening your horizons. Even if society suggest that your future is toward mediocrity, it's still up to you how hard you're willing to work, and no one will stop you if you want more than what society offers. And with that said, i hope that you can see that taking a year off to play games is counterproductive in all regards...
your friends friend is an idiot
no one in their right mind would take a year off of college just to play a video game
Unless you consider his immediate happiness.[QUOTE="Rakuho"]...i hope that you can see that taking a year off to play games is counterproductive in all regards...
emitsu97
If ever there was an opportune time to take a break from responsibility it's during the college years.
I did consider his immediate happiness... but a whole year? really?
no one is talking about any sort of responsibilities, as for many undergrads, the only responsibility they have is to simply get an eduction.
so in that sense, it could be pretty lax if you take the minimum full time unit requirement, and then spend the rest of your free time doing whatever you want and only crunching when a midterm approaches or a paper is due.
but when you're chilling for a year, you're not in college, you're just wasting precious time. But like i said in my original post, if his circumstances allow for him to take so much time off, then more power to him... and i would be a liar if i said i didn't want to take so much time off to do stuff that makes me happy; but if that's not the case, he's only going to make it harder on himself later on (not to mention that coming back after a year of absence is very difficult)
 for all intents and purposes, i don't even care if the guy is real or not, it's just the concept that matters...
but i see your point as well, because happiness "right now" matters as much as the happiness of "tomorrow," and for many it matters even more. I just don't think procrastinating this much is going to help in the long run.

If this guy's friend is that stupid I don't think education is for him.Education > Video Games

It was probably mentioned on here already but on the 360 forum, someone said their school principal is giving their students a MW2 holiday.
gago-gago
That's worse than the student taking a year from school to play MW2. What an amazing society we live in. It never ceases to amaze me.
People have taken a break from college for a lot dumber reasons... unless this guy plans on playing for $$$ in tournaments... he better have a plan B.

Its made stupidier by the fact that its MW2

That's a pretty interesting word lol
My bad. I did not do that on purposePlaying a game for a year? everyday? and not go to school? so I assume this dudes school life is really long per day becuase if you played everyday for jsut 3 hours (thats after school) you have played over 1,000 hours. if you play for 9 hours (without going to school) your looking at 3,285 hours. I dont think I could play one game for that long. but if he does I think he should get a guiness record - for being the biggest retard and making gamers look like the steroetypical 'no-life-in-the-dark rejects'

Yea, the whole internet was laughing at him. It's really sad when you think of the whole situation.
You don't know many CoD fans, do you?[QUOTE="The_Pig_Hostage"][QUOTE="armorbreaker"]
I really doubt this guy would play MW2 everyday for the whole year.
armorbreaker
Nope, but I do think that nobody can play the same game everyday again and again. Surely, it gets boring after a while.
