I am asking this question because it seems slowly but surely that 3D is entering more homes as new tv's, games & movies come out. I am awaiting my new 3D tv to come here next week (although I am not buying mainly for the 3d experience). I know that we have a few games out that are 3d capable (& Uncharted 3 on the way), so what do you guys think? Are you going to invest in it or do you think it will fade out?

I've yet to see anything in 3D (except, you know, the real world). No Avatar, no video games neither on consoles or handhelds. Chances are when I need a new TV, I'll get a 3D-capable one, but until then, 3D is a menu option I won't even glance at.

I hear you. I needed a new tv & that's why I jumped to an 3d capable tv.

well they are developing glasses free 3d tv. they had A TON at CES... the problem with those now is that there are only a few 3d viewing angels... i think its 3 or 5 positions so far... once price goes down like HDTV's did I'm sure 3d will become a viable option for most consumers... It adds nothing (for me) in movies and games, but I will probably get one in a few years once the price has shrunk.

I haven't seen any games in 3D but I have seen movies and I don't think offers anything special. In fact, I kinda think 3D is distracting and detracts from the overall experience. It forces to focus on certain parts of the screen rather than taking in the whole image. Plus it just looks stupid in my opinion.

Two biggest problems I have with 3D:

1. The glasses are mad uncomfortable.

2. Most "3D" movies that have come out in the past few years (with the exception of Avatar, which.. crappy story isn't made up for with amazing effects imo) have been lacking in the 3D. There might be two or three things in every movie that kinda came out of the screen at me. Definitely not worth the extra money if they're not putting the effort into it.

I am not a "fan" of 3d, but come on, man. In HD shows..EVERYTHING isn't full HD. So, your #2 problem really misses it's points. I mean that's like people saying "I won't invest in HDTV'S because everything isn't in FULL HD when it comes to shows/games.

There's a BIG difference in something that's in HD and something that's in 3D. Sure, not everything in everything is HD... but most of every movie/show/game actually is. Play an HD game on an HD screen, then play it on an SD. One of the advantages I like, for example, is Dead Rising. on an HD screen, the words aren't effing tiny!

Now, think about a 3D movie... Monsters vs. Aliens, for example. There was ONE part in that entire movie where the 3D actually seemed to be 3D and not just popped up from the screen slightly. There's a BIG difference in that comparison. :\

I think that is because most movies are not shot in 3D, but rather get a post processing 3d treatment.. I'm sure that will change in the next few years.

Never thought of that, but that is probably true. Only movie recently I think was shot in 3D was Tron: Legacy. Still watched it in 2D in theater, though. :\

However, 90% of things in "HD" are actually shot in HD.

And somehow this is relevant?

I didn't say I didn't like 3D because it was 90% 3D and 10% NOT. I said I didn't like it because there's a very minimal amount of 3D in most films right now. We're talking 20 maybe 30% of most movies are actually in 3D. Now, you may think it's okay to go to a movie theater and pay an extra four (or 8 if you live around here) bucks for only a sub-par 30% of a movie being in the format you're paying 100% of a price for, but I'm not going to do it.

I've tried it on both movies and games at home. It's not worth the discomfort of the glasses and the headaches from the way 3d is done. I won't be interested until we can have full 3d without glasses with wide viewing angles that doesn't cause headaches. In other words, something not likely to happen unless holograms become popular.

I could care less about 3D movies because I stated before that I am not a fan of 3D. I don't pay extra for ANY film because of the 3D feature.

I think it's a waste of time since all you can do with 3D is look at it. If 3D provided us with more interactivity with games then maybe I would be more interested in it, but so far it's not something I would go out of my way to have.

Well, to be quite honest... the way the 3DS works is actually quite nice. You can adjust the amount of 3D it shows if it hurts the eyes. Only problem right now, not many good games in 3D. Personally can't wait for OoT 3D, myself.

Google it, CNET have an FAQ on 3d tv, their bottom line was that it's unnecessary, but it's your choice. As for me, not interested in it, utter waste of money.

My experience:

I wanted a new HDTV with a LED display after christmas this year and while browsing to find the best one I wanted I found 1 which pleased me, was cheap enough with tons of goodies thrown in and had 3D to boot! Never been a fan of 3D ... buthell ... why not this TV had super review on it, was in my price range and they gave 2 pair of glasses with it.

My TV is a Sony KDL-46HX800 for anyone interrested.

A few points of interrests:

- 3D in general is more interresting than what I thought at first, I was thinking it would be pretty pointless because of the smaller screen (compare to theater) but I was wrong even though the "feel" is different.

- Some movies are really impressive but the game I tried so far are not really worth the 3D investment. The 3D trailer of uncharted 3 gave me a really nice impression however so hopefully this will change.

- I have no eye strain like many people do with the glasses but they are a bit heavy. I don't have problem really but my gf can't watch 2 movies in a row.

Overall I like my investment, but if your current setup is not completely outdated (I had a 26in screen) I wouldn't feel the urge to change.

Right now, there's nothing about 3D that got me interested, actually. I never got impressed by 3D movies, and 3D on the 3DS just hurt my eyes.

I've watched some 3D TV sample discs in stores and they've also had it set up for video games. After no more than ten minutes of watching them my eyes felt rather strained, and I fear that after a prolonged experience it will just be more annoying than anything. But really, it's just a gimick that will fade out eventually then come back and do the same.

while i think its a nice little niche fad and could probably enrich gameplay elements somewhat. i still see too many cons for 3D as far as investing with price being a major issue. tv, glasses (for me and the resr of my fam), enabled player (check!, thank you PS3) and at this point i still consider the tech to be in the early stages...ill wait a little while longer when the prices go down and the reliability goes up...

Eeehh. I have a 3DS, and it's pretty cool, but until it's near mandatory, I probably won't get a 3DTV. Unless they make an autostereoscopic TV without a necessary "sweet spot".

3DTVs wont catch on until the glasses go away. Personally, I don't mind 3D, if used well it's a cool effect. But it's nothing mindblowing.

I think it's way too expensive right now to be as viable as those in the industry seem to think it is. I don't mind wearing the glasses (which are hideously overpriced), but I hate the idea of having to replace the batteries on those things every so often.

not worth it. 3d will never be a standard in video games, but only an option to those who prefer it.

What most of you seem to forget is that they are HDTV's with 3D capabilities, so it's not as if you're investing in an all out 3d tv.

I really dont understand the "it costs too much" stuff. The panasonic i got was purchased for less than the 2D version was listed for. Got the Avatar combo pack, turned the movie over on Ebay which paid for the glasses and left me spending roughly $900 for 50 inches worth of 3D capable plasma WITH glasses that are USB rechargable.

Even if the panel lacked 3D functionality it would have still been the same panel i purchased. I just wish there was more content. I definitely would not buy 3D to be buying 3D. Fact of the matter is that if you are buying high up in your price range, chances are you are going to get 3D whether you want it or not.

Not to mention that going forward it will be almost impossible to spend $1000 or more on a panel and it NOT have 3D.

I really dont understand the "it costs too much" stuff. The panasonic i got was purchased for less than the 2D version was listed for. This 100%.

Firstly, 3D makes my head dizzy..

Secondly, 3D tvs are listed on the DOOMED TECHNOLOGIES by cnet

What most of you seem to forget is that they are HDTV's with 3D capabilities, so it's not as if you're investing in an all out 3d tv.

yeah its not on all the time. I never get the headaches or get dizzy at home i do get it at the movie theatres though

I think it's way too expensive right now to be as viable as those in the industry seem to think it is. I don't mind wearing the glasses (which are hideously overpriced), but I hate the idea of having to replace the batteries on those things every so often.

MusashiSensi

I agree about the price & having to change the batteries often will be a kick in the butt. I just say if my new hdtv comes with 3d capabilities...why not go for it?

Not that bad, the glasses are rated to last 100 hours, so far I've watched a lot of movies and they are still going strong. + you can buy CR2032 that you need in the HX800 glasses for like 65cent on monoprice ...

It's coming way too fast . We've just had HD gaming . And the glasses are a step back . I also get headaches when looking at the screen too long (als 3DS) and lastly, when we get holochamber 3D rooms, I'll gladly invest . Until then, I trust my HDTV .

a single coin cell batter lasted me 4 months or regular usage of sony 3d (according to sony -> 1coin cell = aprx. 100hrs.) , that not something that should bother you , a replacement coin cell costs about 2$ (energizer , not a chinese noname , these may be even cheaper)

I got it, and I love it. Killzone 3 is a great 3D game, and the Ubisoft remakes should continue to be fun. Crysis 2's 3D was merely OK. And I love the movies, but I wish Netflix would let you rent the 3D version.

why is everyone so against the glasses, i think it adds to the experience, and they are not uncomfortable, thats why youre paying so muc for them, because they are designed well

i would rather have awesome 3D with glasses over jumpy 3D you can only stare direct at with no glasses

i agree ,i got the feeling that most people who bash glasses do not even have 3tvs nor those glasses and most probably cant even afford them , there was literally nobody who complained about 3d glasses while actually wearing them and everyone liked the 3d effect when whatching my tv, 3d with glasses is so much better today , that may change during time when different better glassesless 3d tech will exist , but seriously glassesless 3ds is not nearly a competition to a 40+ 3d lcdsand ps3 games , im not saying 3ds i bad before you start to flame me , its just the same differnce of quality when you compare lets say god of war 3 and god of war on psp

I too feel that most people bashing the glasses (not all of you) have never experienced it & either tag along with the bashing crowd or go by what they HEAR. 3D may not be for every but neither is HD. If someone came on here with a standard TV saying how much HD sucked or it isn't needed I am sure the majority of you would target that member with a search & destroy flame reply (I have seen it happen here already more than once).
