Since games suck these days for the most part due to all these unwanted and unnecessary gimmicks, lifelike realistic graphics being the primary focus of a game over fun and gameplay, almost every game made now is a shooter, multiplayer in every single game, QTEs, DLC, motion controls, 3D, streamlining and casualization (making games simple and easy for simple and stupid people), who else wishes that modern games were like classic games?

I seriously wish that modern games were like classic games, but just with enhanced graphics and controls. (I MEAN IMPROVED GRAPHICS AND NOT LIFELIKE/REALISTIC GRAPPHHIKKKXX). Video games would be so much better, instead of the suckfest known as modern gaming.

I wish that Sony would go on doing their own thing like in the past, but with the current industry, they kinda are forced to go with the flow, so to speak. Classic games are superior to modern games and they still have their gameplay intact, before watering down video games for unintelligent people became the norm.

TLTR version: Video games have become bastardized due to unwanted changes that dumb down games. Video games have devolved for the simple minded, while those wanting a solid video gaming experience are left behind in the dust.

For me, it depends on the genre. While I like the direction that some genres have taken, I very much wish that JRPGs still played like they did back in the PSX days. They had a greater emphasis on game play and exploration rather than cutscenes that last too long and linear paths.

Play Demon's/Dark Souls.Swift_Boss_A
I have at least 400 hours put into both games.

Sorry but 2 games (despite being the best damned video games this gen), does not make up for a video gaming suckfest that has lasted this entire video game console generation.

Yeah, almost all current gen JRPGs suck, (with a few exceptions). Only good JRPGs this gen are like Lost Odyssey, Valkyria Chronicles, Jeanne D'Arc, Xenoblade, Tales of Graces F, and those are all the great JRPGs this gen. I can count all those on one hand.

(D Souls series are WRPGs, not JRPGs, which is why I didn't count them)

It seems like they have just been recycling the same crap with newer graphics the last 15 years. It seems like 90% of games are Mario 64 with new textures.Thankfully theres PC indies and cough*xbox live indies*cough to actually have new ideas and gameplay.

it would be nice, unfortunately it'll never happen.. i don't understand why they don't just remake some of the old classics such as contra, castlevania *the original* even battle toads could be awesome if done right with enhanced graphics and a cool fighting system, these are the things game corps need to be considering instead of *what other franchise can we shove mp into*

Not all, but most retail games. Because, unfortunately, many new gamers, think that the quality and fun of a game is determined by gr0phFFIIIXXKSSsss.

Some companies cannot even do that right. (see TMNT on PSN, and newer classics such as Silent Hill (HD collection)).

Oh and when they do something, like Goldeneye, everyone gets all excited and thinks it will be the same, but with improved graphics and controls and physics, but are disappointed and cry when it turns out that their beloved game was actually reinvented as something else that has nothing to do with the original and ends up sucking because of it. Why are video game companies so god damned stupid?

The problem is, in many cases of people's anger the cause is that someone only sees the bad in someone or something. In these scenarios a very good way to mitigate one's anger is tofocus on the good. Many of us grew up with the same games and have played many of the same games up to this point so why do some of us have drastically different outlooks and different levels of intensity when discussing video games? We are all different but that can't be used as an excuse. Some may say their anger is justified because what they are saying is true. This however is a very dangerous line of thinking and if spread toward other areas of life it will bring pain and sadness to anyone involved.

Shang, I have spoken out on GameFaqs for years about current gen devs ruining video games. I just do not know of a more productive way than to get the message out about how sucktastic video games have been lately.

We should start some sort of crusade, like, "Occupy Video Game Movement". 99% of current gen games are casualized multiplayer gimmick crap.

i blame the internet more than anything, cause its the net which gave these greedy bastards the ability to do things like force multiplayer on everyone and release half a game then charge more money for the rest.. i knew years ago that videogames and the internet don't mix, one word... CAPCOM! the best example i can give.. need i say more? lol

I don't troll. Maybe you should stop trolling.

I only tell it like it is, and saying that a red object is red, for example, isn't trolling. Also, just because you don't agree with someone also does not mean they are trolling.

Also funny how MOST PEOPLE IN THIS TOPIC AGREE WITH ME!!!!!! And not you. So sorry. What I say is true because it is true.

No idea what SW is. Star Wars?

I think alot of the love for classic games is mainly just nostaligic. If we were to play them today, they wouldn't actually be that good. That said, I do enjoy many simple 2D SHMUPS.

thanks for your post but i wasn't talking about things remaining in 2D, since before this gen there have been 3d things since like super mario 64.

I'm talking about the core element of fun, mostly.

Modern games are not as appealing as past games...yes Demon's/Dark Souls is addicting, but I have gone back to games such as WoW...Diablo 2....CS:Source....Half Life series...etc....because those games are fun. Most games nowadays focus on a cinematic experience which was amazing at first but they feel that multiplayer will keep the game alive. I prefer single playr over multiplayer depending on the type of game. I even went back to Symphony of the Night and MediEvil because I love classic games like those.

Very few will agree, and since you can't get enough of trolling about "generic games with gunz" maybe you should take up another hobby, because quite frankly nobody cares in the vast majority who enjoy linear and shooting games

Even though I still enjoy this generation's games, I can't deny many of them are dumbed down. I played through Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory yesterday. Aside from scripted events, this game offers so much freedom. You can complete the game without killing one guard (unless necessary to for the mission).

I looked up Splinter Cell: Conviction and cringed when the producer said the original games are "too hard" so he wanted to streamline the gameplay to make a more stealth-action hybrid, which most people said was a horrible idea (I haven't played it yet but I'm afraid to).

Even Shinji Mikami upsets me. In an interview, he said God Hand failed to sell because he had "too much freedom" to create the game he envisioned. Now, whether you enjoy the game or not is irrelevant. The point is, he's basically saying that creative freedom should be limited to increase video game sales... what?!

I still enjoy this generation. There are plenty of gems in my opinion that I love but I can't deny developers have been dumbing down gameplay for certain games (e.g. annoying, arbitrary QTEs).

I tend to agree that modern games can be to easy compared to classic games. Demons Souls and Dark Souls are a least 2 modern games that require pratice and skill to beat. I would like to see some of the classic franchise revisisted. That may not happen, As gaming has changed these days.

I'm glad that I held on to my old consoles for when I need a classic fix

I am just playing through my collection of old classic CRPG's (think Baldur's Gate and so on) and the gameplay and whole world are completely different to modern games. While some call Dragon Age: Origins a spiritual successor to all those DnD games by BioWare and others its storytelling is horrible. Right from the get-go you know your enemy, you know what you have to do and ultimately you know how it all will end. It is sad that Planescape: Torment is still (for me) the best storytelling in any genre and especially a RPG to this day but what saddens me way more is the fact that not a single game came even close to PS:T. Sure there is definitely some part of nostalgia in this but I just can't imagine that "kids" who grow up with CoD or the modern Fallout installments or even the two newer Elders Scrolls games will think of them as true genre gems in some ten years or so. Not to sound to much like a hipster but great stories/characters/gameplay can be found in indie games nowadays. On a sidenote, anyone who misses classic games should try out Dwarf Fortress. It's free, it has a steep learning curve, it is overly complicated, you will lose - a lot, and it has a very strange kind of humor. Much of what I miss in games :P

First, don'T feed the trolls, if you reply ... you fell in the trap.

Second, i don't see your point. Different games for different tastes. I don't like hockey and football games ... desn't mean they are bad games.

What gives this impression is probably that longer developpement time for your game type, and the multiplication of game types as diminished the ration of your game type in the total game pool.

Casuals have as much the right to like games as we do.

Sadly, being more numerous the casual market as attacted too much attention from devs. Until they realise that more casual gamers do not always equal more sales (they called casuals for a good reason ... they don't buy 3-5 games a month ) we will see a higher ratio of games aimed towards them.

The consistant big sellers are not casual games, except maybe for mario titles.

As far as i'm concerned to real problem is the multiplication of gaming platform. Nintendo Ds, Wii, Wii U, PS3, PsVita, PsP, Ps2, Xbox360, Iphone, Ipad, Ipod, PC, MAC, etc.

Devs end up programming for too many platforms to reach a correct amount of customers, which makes developpement time and costs skyrocket.

why can't they just make 2 versions of a game? one for the multiplayer *for the casuals* and another for the 1 player story *for the real gamers* this way both party's could be satisfied and neither would be skimped on, me and a friend were discussing this one day when we were on the topic, he's heavily into mp and i only play sp games so we started to question why game devs haven't thought of this yet..

First of all, how are games with gunz in them not generic? How are they not all samey? Do you have a legitimate answer to that? I think not.

Anyhow, if nobody agrees, there's like 5 or so other people aside from myself who feel somewhat of the same way as me in this topic.

You are saying that you enjoy shallow linear shooting games? Why don't you like games with more content and options? Games that let you do what you want to do? Instead you are constrained with severe limitations on your game and aside from multiplayer, the linear campaign is like 5 hours long.

Who the F could possibly like that?

Devil May Cry has guns, BioShock has guns and Vanquish has guns. Are they all samey and generic? Yeah, I didn't think so.

And I don't think he said he exclusively only likes linear shooters. Not every game needs to be open ended and gives you hundred and one different options. That makes it difficult for the developer to tell a tightly scripted story that is well paced and well written.

DMC isn't TPS or FPS tho. Anyway, the series is being destroyed by Ninja Theory, who are a terrible developer who have never made a good game. But I am going off topic here.

Who wants tightly scripted story that is well paced and well written? You beat the game once and you won't give an f about the story anymore. Better to focus more on gameplay and exploration for a more expansive game that is less boring and more to do with many more options.

Bioshock is kind of generic, with it being a FPS. Vanquish is somewhat generic being a TPS, and also with having QTEs. QTEs are awful garbage.

[QUOTE="anime_gamer007"]Devil May Cry has guns, BioShock has guns and Vanquish has guns. Are they all samey and generic? Yeah, I didn't think so.

And I don't think he said he exclusively only likes linear shooters. Not every game needs to be open ended and gives you hundred and one different options. That makes it difficult for the developer to tell a tightly scripted story that is well paced and well written.

So, let me get this straight, a story is pointless after you already see it the first time? And a game is simply generic because it can be categorized into a genre, specifically first person and third person shooters? Yeah, I'm not gonna bother trying to have a debate with you.

Very few will agree, and since you can't get enough of trolling about "generic games with gunz" maybe you should take up another hobby, because quite frankly nobody cares in the vast majority who enjoy linear and shooting games

soundcellx

First of all, how are games with gunz in them not generic? How are they not all samey? Do you have a legitimate answer to that? I think not.

Anyhow, if nobody agrees, there's like 5 or so other people aside from myself who feel somewhat of the same way as me in this topic.

You are saying that you enjoy shallow linear shooting games? Why don't you like games with more content and options? Games that let you do what you want to do? Instead you are constrained with severe limitations on your game and aside from multiplayer, the linear campaign is like 5 hours long.

Who the F could possibly like that?

it really depends bro, if you're talking about shooters like killzone 2 an 3, CoD, MW, battlefield.. yea those games are multi-fvcked, generic, shallow, and boring as piss! now on the other hand u got fps games which are just masterpieces! like Bioshock *the original NOT the multi-fvcked sequel* Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Bulletstorm, ect.. now what makes these games so fun to play? VARIETY! u do much more than just run an gun, in bioshock u got plasmid powers which let u control fire, lightning and ice elements, or splice up any way u want! in deus ex u got all kinds of sh!t, graphic stealth kills, cloak, hacking upgrades, u can even see thru walls! bulletstorm has a harpoon type thingy kinda like scorpions spear made of energy.. point i'm trying to make is not ALL shooters are aweful, it all depends on the type of gameplay involved.

Well, Deus Ex HR was spectacular. I have the platinum trophy and went through the entire game without killing anyone except bosses. If you had to shoot enemies in it, then I might not even like the game.

soundcellx- i hear ya man, u should see how i play that game, i play like a kill crazed psycho who can't be stopped! only people i let live are the pedestrians.. lmfao Deus Ex is the perfect example of just how awesome a game can be when its not held back by stupid crap like multiplayer, Deus Ex had no mp what-so-ever leeching off it which is the ONLY reason it did so well, had they shoved mp into it like every other shooter i garantee u it would have sucked balls and we wouldn't be talking about it right now.. see games like this are the reason i'm just dumb founded sometimes trying to understand why so many game devs can't learn from this and just STOP FORCING MULTIPLAYER INTO EVERYTHING! seriously it just makes me shake my head in confusion... we don't need it!!! game devs need to wake up and realise this!!!

Ya. I do admit though that developers do not always have a say in multiplayer or not, since publisher's like EA and Activision pretty much force the devs they publish to have certain things on their checklist, such as multiplayer. Publishers for the most part do not give gaming studios freedom of creativity, and that is one of the major problems, since just to be safe regarding sales, that is why they force nearly every game to be a generic shootie since it is almost guaranteed to be a smash hit sales wise with the new 9 year old gamers who haven't experienced anything outside of Call of Duty.

sword games are definitely so much cooler than gunz, but Ameribros only care about teh gunz and short hand holdey games.

Getting angry at someone over something can make us look like fools if we don't have all the facts and even moreso if we don't even know the thought process involved in the actions that led to our being angry. Imagine that we're sleeping and the doorbell rings at 2:00 A.M., we would then ignore it in hopes that it will stop. The doorbell rings more and more and then we yell at the top of our lungs to this person and tell them to go away. The stranger calls out to us and says "Your house is on fire!" Now would we still be angry at this stranger?

dude no offense, and although your philosephies are really intelligent and well thought out... they have nothing what-so-ever to do with the topic of videogames, perhaps u should try a self enlightenment forum.

this is very true, and i've noticed that even when there are non-shooting games created most never make it to the US.. like the new samerai showdown game *one of my favorite series of all time* and they DID make a new one for ps3 an 360 but here's the problem.. we'll never see it cause it was only released in japan! :x check it out on utube.

I too really like the older games and still play them today. Just because there are things one would dislike about games today, would it be fair to start demeaning it and the people that made it? If I made a videogame today and I wanted to put multi-player in it would you start insulting me and what I made?

Ever hear of Bobby Kotick?

That guy is the very essence of evil and worthy of insults that there are no words strong enough to emphasize what an evil douche he is.

You DO know that video game CEOs only care about $$ and they do not care about delivering a good video game, right? Also, many game devs have been prevented from delivering a good video game, because of the pressure of video game politics from CEOs and the like. And they're the ones dumbing down games to appeal to the drooling sheople.

It started as guys in garages who loved gaming made games. Many failed and the best are what shaped gaming.I remember you couldnt have games that used the same mechanics you always had to have something new to stand out. Then gaming got bigger and turned into companys, then CEOs from Doritos and pepsi came in to run sheet. They looked at charts at the meeting and said"that Call of Duty thing, there really doing some business.Lets make our game like that,so we can get in on that"."I know what Im talking about I use to run pizza hut".

So now every other game uses unreal3 engine,if the game actually lets you play and doesnt play itself, the camera will be right behind your head with 1-3 options of height, right stick looks around, and there will be 3-4 icons in a corner reminding you what the buttons do like ocarina of time.Rather the character im moving around is called Mario,Captain Sheperd,Enzio,Markus Fenix,or Link theres just so many times I can play THIS game before i say I GET IT lets try something new.

TC you should check out Kingdom Rush on Kongregate. Its a simple tower defense, but develishly clever and cool graphics that enhance its fun gameplay.Beware you may blink and it will be dawn outside.

Mostly what im saying applys to those who like RPGs and strategy. If you like FPS and TPS then good for you you are in the golden age of gaming.I like those and a little of everything.I view the problem as everything has turned into that small segment and stagnated.Fallout, elder scrolls, mass effect the new "RPGs" they might as well call them Gears of War 4,5,and 6.As Al gore's supporters say"Ive been disenfranchised".I want a recount on this game development.
