Donald Trump Jr posts emails of Russian offer of material on Clinton: 'I love it'

Donald Trump Jr has been forced to release damning emails that show he welcomed what he was told was a Russian government attempt to harm Hillary Clinton’s election campaign.

The emails show music promoter Rob Goldstone telling the future US president’s son that “the crown prosecutor of Russia” had offered “to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia and would be very useful to your father”

Goldstone adds: “This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr Trump.”

Trump Jr replies 17 minutes later and welcomes the offer. “If it’s what you say, I love it, especially later in the summer.”

In a later email, Goldstone describes the Russian lawyer they were due to meet, Natalia Veselnitskaya, as a “Russian government attorney”.

The formatting of the emails suggests that Trump Jr forwarded the whole chain to Paul Manafort, then Trump’s campaign chairman, and Jared Kushner, Trump Jr’s brother-in-law, before the meeting the three attended with Veselnitskaya.

Trump Jr released the email exchange on Tuesday apparently to pre-empt their publication by the New York Times, which, this weekend, first broke the news of his meeting with Veselnitskaya in June last year. Veselnitskaya had promised compromising information about Clinton but apparently failed to deliver.

The president’s eldest son denies any wrongdoing and tweeted on Tuesday: “Media and Dems are extremely invested in the Russia story. If this nonsense meeting is all they have after a year, I understand the desperation!”

On Monday night, the Times had reported that Trump Jr was informed in an email before a meeting with the lawyer that damaging information about Clinton to be handed over was part of an effort by the Russian government to help the Trump campaign.

The Times did not publish the Goldstone email, but reported that three different people had described it to them. On Tuesday the paper published the email, and Trump Jr posted the email chain to Twitter.

There is no such position as crown prosecutor of Russia.

Pardon me? I have no idea what you're referring to.

At a minimum it shows that the Trumps are the real liars who no one should trust. Above that, it shows that they clearly had no problem working with the Russian government to influence the outcome of the election.

The desperate right wants to concentrate on only comrade Trumpski Jr. to try to downplay this, but Kushner and Manafort were there and they all participated in this meeting. Intent matters.

It seems like Matt was saying that republicans quite recently had higher standards than just the law, and they were far more concerned about the russian government/Putin gaining influence in the world just around 8 months ago. Now that it looks like the guy republicans voted for was assisted by the russian government in a very direct way and Putin wanted their candidate to win, republicans egos are at stake and thus their standards have been greatly lowered in an attempt to turn a blind eye to this story.

But then again Matt's a smart guy who may have been saying far more than that as well. :P

Conspiracy to commit election fraud and conspiracy to obtain information from a foreign adversary are federal crimes.

Seems the narrative has suddenly changed from, "this Russian collusion thing is made up by the deepstate establishment and media to save Hillary" to, "He did nothing illegal".

Did he not? This is literally the president's son coming forward and showing he welcomed getting compromising information from a source within Russia on Hillary prior to the election. This is pretty damn close to demonstrating conspiracy, which, as Perfect_Blue noted, are federal crimes.

This may not be a smoking gun (although I'm failing to see how it isn't), but it is a damning piece of evidence for the investigation. If anything, this outright proves that those closest to Trump were fully willing to engage with Russia to help him win. For crying out loud, the guy talking to Don about this incriminating information even SAYS he can send it to Trump himself, but due to its "ultra sensitive" nature wanted to run it by Jr. first.

Trump jr. wouldn't of made a peep if his lawyers told him it wasn't okay to leak. Now news outlets are dusting off they're lawyer degree trying to prove this is a Trump-Russia collusion.

FYI it IS a Trump-Russia collusion. There is no other way to look at it. But I guess it's better to repeat those mantras to yourself and the blame the media for finding out the corruption exists than it is to admit you were wrong in your vote.

Clinton was investigated by the FBI and they had over 10 Congressional investigations related to her emails, Benghazi, White Water, etc. and nothing was ever found.
