Wow
Absolutely amazing. Alabama did the right thing and elected a Democrat over a pedophile.
Such wonderful news.
That's good, but it also makes me wonder what crazy shit Roy Moore is going to say tomorrow
He will probably say something tonight.
Something along the lines of : https://politics.theonion.com/roy-moore-retires-from-politics-to-spend-more-quality-t-1821235915
With the senate effectively being flipped tonight, trumps presidency is effectively and legislatively over.
Dumb bastard didn’t even last a year, with no legislative wins despite having all three branches of government.
No major legislation will be passed now.
Nothing but executive orders and fucking up net neutrality until he resigns in disgrace late next year.
Fox News and CNN also calling it for Jones.
The count is not over, but as it stands most of the precincts still to report in are in mostly democrat-controlled territory, and the likelyhood of Moore turning it around at this point is becoming extremely low with every passing minute.
Trump and Bannon went all in on Moore. This gives establishment GOPers a LOT of ammunition to use against Bannonism.

I wonder if trump will now delete all references to moore from his twitter

Nah, I'm predicting "voter fraud" cause you know... all the... Mexicans... in Alabama... Ohh look a butterfly

"That charge doesn't go away any time soon" Jake Tapper on CNN just said that, and he is totally right. Trump has to deal with supporting and endorsing an alleged child molester come 2018 and 2020.
They're holding out hope
Thoughts and prayers /s
I remember feeling the same way about a month and a year ago. I know what it feels like to desperate, vanishing hope. Its awful. I honestly feel bad for them.
For anyone wondering who to thank for the election of Senator Doug Jones. pic.twitter.com/OZWUN7Jy0Z

Moore winning would have still been a loss for Republicans, since it wouldn't have took long for Democrats to make him the face of the party, while bragging how they got Al Franken to resign rather than have him serve with the allegations against him.
Doug Jones, if he wants to get reelected, is going to need to avoid siding with the Democrats on a few things, since he's probably going to be running against an stronger Republican in 2020 that won't have a bunch of sexual allegations against them.
From the 538 liveblog
No doubt about it: Major, metro Alabama and the Black Belt came through for Jones. Voters in rural white counties didn’t move much towards Jones, but they utterly failed to turn out for Moore.
Of all Alabama senate races since 1990, only the 2014 race, in which Jeff Sessions ran uncontested, saw a higher share of write-in votes.
With 97 percent of precincts reporting, Jones has a margin of 0.7 points over Moore, and the share of write-in votes is more than double that, at around 1.7 percent.

This is why ANY republican backing Moore on a political tactics angle was a stupid idea anyway. Moore was *never* a reliable vote for establishment GOPers [he could easily vote against anything that shows up in Congress], likewise Jones *HAS* to vote with the GOP at least *some* of the time if he has any chance of winning re-election. Choosing Moore for the senate vote while completely sacrificing their moral authority was never going to be anywhere close to worth it.
@Nuck81: "With the senate effectively being flipped tonight"
How do you come to that conclusion, given the two member buffer plus the tiebreaker?
Isn't it one member plus tiebreaker? 49-51 right now.

Indication of things to come. If Alabama can be flipped then all seats in the red states are not secure. Guarantee you other GOP senators are worrying about their chances in 2018 tonight.

I wouldn't use this election as a sign of things to come considering that Jones' opponent had several sexual allegations against him, and he probably would have lost if he ran against a stronger opponent that wasn't an alleged pedophile.
I’ve been to a lot of celebrations for winning candidates. But this one (I’m at the Jones party in Birmingham) is something. Jones supporters were dancing in celebration here at the Birmingham Sheraton after the screen in the ballroom showed CNN calling the race for him. They played “Happy” by Pharrell Williams.
Kind of befitting the Jones coalition, the crowd of Jones supporters was about one quarter black women in hats and about a quarter young hipsters, with a lot of older whites also in attendance.

Considering the way things are going, there isn't going to be a politician alive in washington who don't have several sexual allegation against them.
@drlostrib: I can't wait to hear it!! Probably something like illegals and LGBT voters stole the election.
Moore is saying it’s not over. Demanding a recount.
They're grasping at straws, nothing more.

I assume anyone would do the same in a close election.
No. If you lose by more than 20,000 votes in a state election you except defeat and go home.
It's interesting that Roy Moore said it had to be a .5% difference to trigger a recount, and yet CNN is currently reporting a .6% difference. Also Jones currently has a 20,936 vote lead, that seems pretty significant in my opinion for a state wide race.
Assuming nothing weird happens like Wisconsin a few years ago, congrats to Doug Jones, and thank you Alabama for not electing a pedophile.

It is a 1.5% difference

Oh shit, your right! Sweet, I'm happy about that.
apparently the establishment republicans are a little happy because they see it a as a blow to steve bannon
I can't blame them. Honestly it was a lose-lose situation for them anyways. If Moore won they would keep their slim majority a little bigger, but then they would have to have a pedophile in their ranks and democrats could hit them with that fact anytime, all the time.

Well true the Republicans have been losing local elections as well. I think Americans woke up to the trump problem.
Congratulations to Doug Jones on a hard fought victory. The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win. The people of Alabama are great, and the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!

Ok, well done. That was a lot more mature than what I was expe...
The reason I originally endorsed Luther Strange (and his numbers went up mightily), is that I said Roy Moore will not be able to win the General Election. I was right! Roy worked hard but the deck was stacked against him!
