And Chicago welcomes them.

The mayor of Chicago, Lori Lightfoot, has vowed to welcome immigrants bussed to the city from the Mexican border, as the hard-right governor of Texas opened a third front in his confrontation with the Biden administration and Democratic sanctuary cities.

Lightfoot delivered a defiant speech on Thursday in which she accused Governor Greg Abbott of cruelty and racism, and pledged to respond to the Texan’s controversial scheme by greeting the released migrants with open arms.

Chicago received its first busloads of 79 migrants, in this case Venezuelans, on Wednesday night.

They were dispatched by Abbott, who has already sent about 9,000 people who crossed the US-Mexico border without documents giving them entry to the US to Washington DC and New York City.

I'm proud of the response from my state, and to Abbott I say, "feel free to keep them coming."

If the FED wants to ignore the border. Texas shouldn't have to carry the entire load on their own. So yeah send them to sanctuary cities. If we can't just deport them then screw it.

@LJS9502_basic: it's most definitely gotten worse. Biden already sent out the message for them to come. Biden got rid of the mexico rule and stopped production of the wall. Has pushed for amnesty.

Everyone and their third cousin is coming now.

These are refugees he's busing. Not illegals. Most illegal immigration is caused by overstaying visas.

Biden should have left the "remain in Mexico" policy. no reason for "refugees" to pass through Mexico to get to us.

So you are against immigrants but don't want to admit it. FYI the US actually needs immigrants.

I love how the Christian right is the most vehement against helping immigrants and the poor in need. Taking a hard stance on immigration is one thing, reconciling it with the teachings of Jesus is another. They need to pick one and stick with it since it's fairly obvious that they are largely exclusive to each other.

What does this video have to do with the topic? Kind of lame to expect us to slog through a 10+ minute video with no exposition.

@HoolaHoopMan: After watching it, the answer appears to be that it reinforces the OP. It features Lightfoot's comments (stating welcome to the immigrants and shaming Abbott) followed by some goofy exposition asking what's wrong with bussing them to other cities and implying that they'll be a drain on society and committing crime.

On short, the author of the video and presumably sargentd who posted it are against immigration.

So basically it prescribes to presumptions of immigrants = bad, while not subscribing to data or evidence based observations to back it up.

Because she's disgusted at their treatment, not how it will effect her jurisdiction. She finds republican immigration policy disgusting.

Don't even waste your time by bringing facts into such a discussion as it doesn't matter to those in full defense mode.

If sanctuary cities are being allow to exist by the leaders of such locals, not one should ever complain nor have any standing when complaining about those who now expect them to walk the walk. Admiral Ackbar, Adams, etc.., complaining doesn't help their position.

Honestly, I give Abbott some cred here. Dems like to rally around open borders and immigration, but then then cry when they are faced with the repurcussions of that. They arent on the border states that have to absorb all that. Talk a big game, but then whine when they have to pay the bill.

No what's dumb are how many people struggle with the definition of an Asylum seeker.

If you want to leave because of the economy you need to come over through legal means. I'm not sure why this is such a struggle for so many to understand. An Asylum seeker is someone who has been " forcibly displaced ". That is not the case for 92 % of our immigrants who come across the southern border.

Examples of this would be Ukrainian refugees who have been Forcibly displaced due to war. Those would be considered "Asylum seekers".

He's just trying to justify his hatred. These people are legal asylum seekers. But he needs an excuse why these legal asylum seekers don't count so he can maintain legal/illegal dichotomy facade, so he's throwing whatever he can at the wall, Trump style.

You're still making an assumption that they're here for only economic reasons. Which again, is usually a symptom of other forms of oppression or natural disaster. Crime, poverty, and a lack of resources are all reasons why people can be displaced. Does someone need to be forcibly removed from their home, thrown on the street by local police for you to see that as a reason for entry?

Averaging those estimates and applying them to the education level of illegal immigrants shows a net fiscal drain of $65,292 per illegal — excluding any costs for their children." - link

So, bus 2K immigrants at 65k each ... 130 million...

No I'm not. I'm basing it off the survey I linked. 92% are here for economic reasons.

Abbott is an idiot lol,

Gov. Greg Abbott’s migrant busing program costs Texas $12 million | The Texas Tribune

costs more to have them stay in texas

"The NAS estimated the lifetime fiscal impact (taxes paid minus services used) of immigrants based on their educational attainment. Averaging those estimates and applying them to the education level of illegal immigrants shows a net fiscal drain of $65,292 per illegal — excluding any costs for their children." - link

So, bus 2K immigrants at 65k each ... 130 million...

Interesting.

Maybe it's true, but is there a better link?

CIS is horrific. "LOW fact" and "EXTREME Right". Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) - Media Bias/Fact Check (mediabiasfactcheck.com). I didn't even have to look up MBFC, I saw Tucker + Laura Igram plastered on the side wall.

He seems to be parroting a similar study from FAIR. Which is also a fake source. The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) - Media Bias/Fact Check (mediabiasfactcheck.com). Which was also making a false analysis: FAIR’s “Fiscal Burden of Illegal Immigration” Study Is Fatally Flawed | Cato at Liberty Blog

Let's temporarily assume it's real, is his "estimated" $65,292 lifetime per undocumented being paid entirely by Texas? If so, is this being off-set by their taxation/production?

This is what I was able to find,

Economic benefits of illegal immigration outweigh the costs, Baker Institute study shows | Rice News | News and Media Relations | Rice University

Indeed, for every dollar the Texas state government spends on public services for undocumented immigrants, new research indicates, the state collects $1.21 in revenue.

@silentchief: Do you not consider extreme poverty a reason? Christ, the right in the US love to scream about American exceptionalism and the awesomeness of our economic system. Why does it make sense to provide such a high barrier letting partake in a system them hold above even god.

I'm not saying they shouldn't be allowed to come over here because of extreme poverty. I'm saying they need to come over through legal means. Asylum Seekers are put into a position where they need to leave the country immediately. That is why they are typically able to avoid the process. However if you are leaving because of poverty you need to go through the process.

If you were talking about a few people, maybe. The American taxpayer can not take care of tens of millions with millions more coming in every year. It's gotten to a point where nations send their poor here so they won't have to take on the responsibility. You're also ignoring the fact that none of them are being vetted, and vetting exists for a reason. You've never thought about the situation honestly, intellectually, or from a fact based position, merely the usual emotionally driven diatribe.

That "system" you people like to look down upon and shit all over is why our country is not like theirs, and ultimately why they are leaving theirs for ours. Which is hilarious because half the shit people like you think we should adopt in this country is the same kind of crap that wrecked theirs. If there wasn't a level of exceptionalism and awesomeness of our economic system, the illegal immigration would be flowing the other direction.

So you'd be OK with reforming the entire process to expedite these same people then? The current process is an expensive monetarily and time wise, which ironically, would preclude more poor people from ever entering.

Immigrants are a net benefit to the country. This idea that they are a drain isn't true.
