Would anyone reject to a game much not unlike Chocobo Tales if it were Locke instead? And it had a very small story? Andraxal
hmm... I don't know about that.. I suppose you could make it work out okay.. but a "kiddy" game is much better off with something fanciful like a Chocobo than Locke in my mind. What kind of storyline? What kind of mini games would make sense for a character such as Locke??
I don't know woman! Perhaps treasure stealing ones? Stealing expensive items from rich people? Exploring new uncharted lands? Collecting special items? The story could be about Locke before getting involved in the FFVI storyline, perhaps they could even add cameos? I wouldn't mind seeing a shadow cameo. Andraxal
I would see a Splinter Cell kind of game with Locke.

Um...I would really hate a game like that for Locke. That kind of setting is definitely set for the more "cute" things in FF like Chocobos.
Locke is a badass "treasure hunter". I could never see him in such a colorful, happy game. Although I would love to see him in a pre-FFVI game (I think I had mentioned that before, maybe on another thread or a few pages back on this very thread). Where him and Rachel are both in it. Although we all know how that would end, so it'd kind of be a tragic game.
I don't know, Locke is one of my favourite characters ever...but I am not sure in what kind of spin-off game he would fit in. I really wouldn't want to see him in a game where it wouldn't take him seriously.

Mmm....no. I can't see him in a platformer either. I am picky when it comes to Locke. hahahaha :P
You know what kind of a game we need? A fighting game MUCH like Super Smash Brothers, if they did they'd instantly create a classic. Especially if they do a great job on the fighting system, there's hundreds of characters they can add, so many enviorments, so much to play on....Imagine fighting as your favorite characters!!! Also Eghrez doesn't count....Those cameo's were terrible. Andraxal
Yes.....Erhgeiz shouldn't count...for anything
SSB type FF fighting game?!?!?!?!?!?!? That would be a dream game for me..... *imagines the possiblities* they could do it though, and it would most likely sell too. If only SE would dare....I just hope Dissidia will be good.

I know!!! That would be a dream come true for me too. SE has SO much to work with - tons of characters, cameos, environments, items, magic, music....I could go on and on.
I am hoping for Dissidia to kind of be the answer to that. Although to see a true SSB type of game featuring FF, I'd rather see it on a console - as they could do much more with that.
But let's say SE does do that...let's hope they don't get carried away doing non-RPG-related games, kind of like Nintendo does. I think I would die if I saw a Mario Party-like game with FF characters. (And die, in a bad way, not die like oh I am so excited.)

 Final Fantasy Party!
Bad thing is....they could do that by combining mini games from all the FF's, the snowboarding game from VII, Blitzball from X, Triple Triad from VIII, the list would go on  Snowboarding with Sephiroth, Tidus, Fran, and Kefka....hmm...

hahahaha, yea I would really dislike seeing all the FF characters exploiting themselves in all the sports in the world like the Nintendo characters do. I mean come on - it's quite tiresome after like the 100th installment of "Mario *insert sport here*".

Actually, you know what? Me too. I guess Nintendo, in a way, is just like SE in those regards. How many Mario Parties are we at now? Like 8 or something? Those games really lost their originality way back at like 2, but Nintendo keeps hashing them out. Why? Because people buy them.
SE will still make remakes. Why? People buy them! It's the same exact thing.
I think ever since games like Madden and stuff started coming out with new "versions" every year, other developers jumped on board. That includes both Nintendo and SE.
Look back at the SNES era - Nintendo was still making their awesome platformers, even though they did throw in little spin-offs like Super Mario Kart. But still, they mainly focused on their standing franchise. Now? We have Mario everything.

That's absolutely bang on.
I really don't know what to put a blame on this. Development costs rising? The fact that it takes larger dev teams and more time to make a game regarding today's consoles? And so devs must rely on things like remakes/spin-offs for extra cash? Maybe it's a whole blend of everything. Maybe we really should just blame EA.
Regardless, I don't think this will change, and we should just accept this as something that we can expect from at least EA, Nintendo, SE and probably others as time goes by.

EA rehashing games every year???!?!?!? Say it isn't so?!?!!??! If you look in the dictionary next to the words: Rehash, Re-release, Milkage, and any other word relating to those you can think of, you would immediately see EA right smack dab next to it :P
Indeed, as companies get larger and costs rise to maintain their employees, production costs, etc. they've gotta put out something to maintain their income. Compare SE today to what Squaresoft was 10 years ago, they were a decent sized company, but nowhere near what they are now. After the FFVII explosion they slowly became larger and haven't slowed down since, especially after the merger.... *sigh* It is as you say, we just need to expect it, from those 3 at least.
Mario Party 10 here we come!!! Or perhaps Mario Lacrosse? :P

 Joking aside - I guess that's the price we pay when we see our favourite companies get bigger and bigger every year. :( I once read something about new devs not being able to make games up to par on the newer consoles simply because they didn't have the money to develop on them. (By not up to par I mean, unpolished graphics, bad sound quality. Basically not taking advantage of the hardware to the fullest potential). So at least we can see these companies use the hardware as much as they can, because they have the money.
I read an article somewhere, in a magazine I beleive that said being a game developing company is very hard. It said that the way they get paid is in advanced to make a product in certain time periods and they checked on it, if it didn't past the requirements they trashed it, and they'd lose funding from it. I guess remakes and rehashs are the only way to really make easy money, and I don't blame them-it's the name of the game; money. :) Andraxal
Partially true. It depends which option you choose to get paid in advance. You also negotiate a time when the game will be finished. They trash the game before they start the programming.

From what I understand, the system works against originality because all the publishers all want "guaranteed hits" and part of this means pitching ideas on the basis of what been done before (and sold) rather than what hasn't (which is a risk). It makes good business sense, but it's pretty depressing.

You are right on about this. It makes sense for publishers to only want guaranteed hits. There is nothing worse than a risk turning into a flop. But you never know when a risk might be a good idea. But that's the problem - they don't know.
It almost seems like bigger companies should be able to take risks since they have more money, but I guess they'd rather be safe.

Yeah, I agree, especially when their salary probably already went up because of the previous hit, imagine if the next game does bad... they won't be able to pay those people. There was an article from GameInformer two months ago depicting this whole publisher vs. developer theme...

They also have shareholders to answer to. ;)
Yep;)

Yes!! That's what I was reading!! :) Also that is why I LOVE third party developers, they aren't bound by the big name company of Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo.

Yeah, but it is more risky.
You can't do anything without risk. :) That's how new and imaginative things are created! How new genres of games are brought into being. So does anyone else think FFXIII will features a pure Technological setting, similar to that of FFVII? I think it'll have a few esscences of fantasy, but it'll probably mainly be technological. I hope it's dark and gritty like FFVII! Andraxal

I wish a lot of publishers had that optimism you have larxene:)
Sometimes you have to put quality over cash, because sometimes, it might pay off.
I want to know how the Blue-haired kid's(Versus) personality will be.
Thanks Cecil. :) Yeah if you put more quality into your game and accept some set backs like lower pricing or properly marketing your product people will be much more happier with you as a game company. I get giddy as a school girl every time Nippon Ichi announces a brand new game for the PS2, because I know it's going to be a quality product and is almost always put on the market on the time they specify. Not to bash Square Enix or anything, but they aren't very well known for that as I'm sure you know. Even so I don't mind if they take an extra while to make the game more polished.
Edit: This is the third time I had to reply as Gamespots having issues. Sorry if I triple posted.

That is so true. Sometimes you just gotta use your gut feeling and go with your ideas. You'll never know until you try. Unfortunately, I don't think it's that easy for devs, since there is always money on the line.
Regarding FFXIII - I, too, think it will be more technological! Of course it will have a little bit of fantasy...since it's not realistic, but for the main part, more technological. And I think it will be more technological in the sense like VII was, rather than VIII. If you look at VIII (even their clothes), it was more of a modern technologica, where VII was more of a technlogical/fantasy.
I hope I made sense.

It's very sad that SE has lost that. Let's remember shall we?
SS used the last of their finances to create what multi million dollar game series? How was the quality of that game series?
We all know the answers
1. FF
2. Great quality
SE lost where they came from and is slowly turning into EA. That is harsh, but true.
It's not just SE though. If you think about it, companies like Nintendo are kind of doing the same thing. I used to be a huge fan of Nintendo, but after their million rehashes of Mario *sport*, Mario party, and now with their whole "casual game" stuff (even though they are saying that they're still doing games for the "core gamer") I am starting to shy away from them. :( It's sad 'cause I grew up with Nintendo, you know?
I guess this is just something that happens nowadays. Hadn't we all discussed this already? :P :)

I know that. I was just using SE as an example.
I wonder if they'll make FF Tennis?
