Just recently picked these games up, but aside from my sighs at the spoilers you just doled out, I must say amen.

Sorry 'bout that. I didn't think about it while I was writing. Guess I didn't see them as important spoilers most of the time (dogmeat and the prez excluded), or thought they were those things that everyone knows, like the Soylent Green ending. In any case, sorry again and I've spoilered it.

Wow, gee. God forbid anyone ever treasure a game for its gameplay. I loved the story, settings, characters, events, everything about the Fallout games. I also happened to totally love the gameplay it was wrapped around. I thought the SPECIAL system was fantastic, loved the AP turn-based system. To me, the ****of gameplay Fallout represents is every bit as important as any other aspect of the game. Every Fallout fan here has the right to defend it. If they're going to screw it around a bunch why even call it a Fallout game any more? If Bungie retained the Halo story but turned Halo 3 in to a side-scrolling shooter, don't you think there would be quite a few unhappy people?

And what makes you think that the new system will either be all that different or... god forbid... better? I firmly believe that things should be built upon and improved.Â
Fallout was made Fallout because it had a great setting. You can (and actually do) make a very good point about gameplay, but I don't think you can keep the system stagnant: It would be a disservice to Fallout. My big problem is that a lot of people have obviously set an image in their minds regarding fallout, and NOTHING will make them happy, even if they won't admit it. If it's an oblivionish game, it will be lambasted for the departure. If it's Fallout with HD graphics, it will be lambasted, mark my words.

Bethseda has a great track record, and has made some terrific RPGs. I think that, even if people didn't enjoy Oblivion (I did, btw), already going up in arms even before seeing the first image, or hearing the first word about the game is not the right way to tackle this.Â
Â
For the record, Fallout is my second favorite game of all time (just behind the original X-Com), and I've played the heck out of it. I love it, and would not mind seeing Fallout 3 be the exact same thing (even same graphics!) as Fallout1, just with an equally good story and ambiance. This, however, does not mean I'm limited to thinking it has to be like that. I trust Beth. I trust Fallout. I think waiting to see what they have up their sleeves (which might not even be "Oblivion with guns") before getting all riled up about the bastardization of the series is the least we can give the devs and the franchise.

P.S. Your Halo analogy irks me, in that you're proposing a much more radical change instead of an adjustment within the genre. I probably would be disappointed by a Fallout Racing Sim with the Forza 2 engine. Even then, Halo Zero was quite fun :P
