I could agree, but unfortunately that's a lesson of distinction that needs to be taught to a lot more people on here. They see a new Zelda entry in the main series, the reaction is oh, great another Zelda game, etc, Another Mario Kart, and so forth.
Again, you make a great point, and as I'm saying it's milkage of a character. Mario is whored out plenty, but then that just makes Nintendo guilty of whoring out Mario, not being the King of milkage.
[QUOTE="st1ka"]the problem i believe is that if we exclude metal gear and Final Fantasy none of those franchises are over 20 years

4 zeldas
3 halos

4 Call Of Duty (without counting some spinoffs)

There's way more than just 4 Zelda and 2 Marios (2 Marios only? The thought is almost laughable).

Weird, I didn't know that Super Mario Galaxy was the same thing it was back on the NES... or that Metroid Prime 3 is the same thing it was back on the NES either.... and here I thought Zelda had come a long way from its over head playing style (or the ever less popular side scroller it was in the second one). Each one of those games changes from game to game and adds more to it and builds upon what was already there. Yea I'll say Mario Party is just about the same damn game every time but oh well, not much can be done there. Even Mario Kart has changed drastically since it was first rolled out on the SNES so many years ago and its come a long ways from its N64 days. To say each of these games is the same as it was from the get go is just being blind to the changes they go through, I wouldn't even say each Metal Gear game was the same, or that every Final Fantasy does the same thing. The only series I really saw do the same thing was Halo and I never touched the first 2 because I wasn't impressed at all and only got the third one because everyone I know plays it and I wanted to join in.
Do your research and actually try playing these titles before you go claiming they haven't changed and are the same thing over and over again. All games change as they go along and sometimes its for better, sometimes its for worse, but very rarely are sequels the same exact thing as a previous entry into any series.
tell me, why does it have to be mario kart? why couldn it be a whole new franchise instead of just milking mario, like F-zero?
why mario party? why not just new characters and call it nintendo party or something?
why is it always MARIO TENNIS, MARIO GOLF, MARIO STRIKERS, MARIO KART, MARIO BASEBALL
MARIO MARIO MARIO

nintendo has been milking the mario franchise for so long that i cant even bare to play its new games anymore, i dont care about mario galaxy, other then the marios i played as kid on the NES SNES N64 and gameboy i just dont care about mario, because im tired of of that character

[QUOTE="Tykain"][QUOTE="-Despacio-"][QUOTE="Tykain"]It's not even comparable, Mario appeared in over 200 games.Auroni
You're talking about the milkage of a character. Yeah, Mario has to be the most whored our character in gaming. But he's also one of the most beloved. AND, he appears a HUGE variety of genres. Don't try to mix up the message.
Milkage of a character is NOT milkage of a series or franchise.
Making sequels of popular games is a good thing, i don't call that milkage. Using a popular character to sell crap spin off games is what i would call milkage and Nintendo is the master of this 'art'.
Ding ding.
After 5 pages we have a winner.
No, I disagree. The poster generalizs all the "spin-off" games as crap. Yeah, some are, but not all of them. The Strikers series has always scored solid, same for Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, etc. Mario Party has turned to crap. and for that Nintendo should be ashamed. It's so easy to say, oh yeah, all that spin-off stuff is crap. But that's just not true.

Why get so angry? And what different would it make if it was Mario Kart or Crazy Ken's Kart, as long as the gameplay is there right?
And honestly, Mario is a beloved character that does help sell titles, it would be criminal not to use him. Mario Kart just sold over a million titles last week. Would Crazy Ken's Kart have sold over a million? Even if it got solid reviews just like Mario Kart Wii did, it probably would not.

im angry because he has already called me a fanboy but keeps missing my point, the gameplay is there yes but im tired of the same characters, why is that so hard to understand? if instead of mario the game mario kart had some generic character i would probably feel more inclined to play it. Why? because im sick of the character.
I have been trying to maintain a rational conversation with you, but your snide comments are starting to anger me, look at this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_games
how can you say you are not tired of the characters? othen then metroid and the franchises that nintendo has abandoned or recently introduced im sick of nintendo characters, its just milkage after milkagest1ka
Glad I'm getting to you then =p
Many of those games listed there aren't in the same genre and if it weren't for the Mario characters being there then it wouldn't be anything close to the orignal game at all. Game likes Mario and Donkey Kong's March of the Minis was a cool game and beyond starring Mario and Donkey Kong had nothing to do with any other series Nintendo has put out there before, I loved the game and it put a whole new spin on things and was very challenging and fun. Other games out there I think Nintendo puts Mario and friends in them just to make sure they sell and because Mario and friends better fit the mood and style of the whacky gameplay than just a random group of characters no one knows. I know if I played Mario Tennis on the 64 without having any of them in it I wouldn't have stuck with it long because it wouldn't have felt right. The Mario universe is something everyone knows, gamer and nongamer alike and anyone can easily recognize the universe so its easier to sell an odd game like Mario Tennis than it would to sell a game called "Super Whacky Tennis!" or something like that.
You claim milkage of characters and its slightly true, yet they hardly ever constantly appear in the same game doing the same thing (outside of Mario Party, which I do wish they would discontinue) and I think its sad to be upset because Nintendo has found a way to bring us these characters in new ways we've never seen before. I'm not sick of Mario and them because I don't focus on them, I focus on if I'm having fun or not. Such as with the March of the Minis game, I didn't care that Mario was once again appearing in a game, I cared that I was enjoying the game and it was challenging me me along the way. I didn't care that Mario and friends were in another sports game because I was having fun with it and if I don't enjoy a game then I don't buy and just go find another game to play while waiting for something else to come out that I enjoy.
That's the problem with people, they focus too much on the wrong things like "OMGWTFBBQ!!!1 Mario again! Milkage! That game has to SUX!" when really its fun and very addicting. Personally I still think its sad to avoid games simply because it has a familiar character in it many will recognize, who cares what set of characters a game stars just so long as the game itself is fun. Isn't that what gaming is really about? Having fun?

im angry because he has already called me a fanboy

Besides, last E3 was it, or the year before we had waht?
HALO Wars
HALO 3
The Peter Jackson HALO Project
A Halo movie in the pipeline.

just so you know you got to me for all the wrong reasons, if anything im even more appaled by mario then i was before theis conversation.
You people never get tired of that character, if you want to be stagnant, fine have fun, just dont expect me to like seeing mario on every single nintendo game...
It doesnt matter to me wheter or not those games are in the same genre, it matters to me that im sick of the mario franchise, im sick of its characters, you aparantly seem to be fine with it, but as long as nintendo keeps this up i wont buy their consoles, the Wii was the console i wanted the most this gen, but when i realized that all this mario thing still held, i decided to go for the 360, way to go nintendo, dont count on my sale

i like it how you convinently ignored the second part of the sentence but hey i guess insulting is better then rational discussion for you isnt it?
just one last question, if Gameplay is all that matters then why dont we just make the main character in every game mario? how about? instead of master chief we have master mario
instead of the unamed hero on Baldurs gate we have mario
instead of gordon freeman we have mario
i meant isnt this your perfect world?

I'm sure the top selling console this generation will miss not having you purchase their console.
Be as tired of Mario as you want but it won't change anything so why let it get to you when the games are fun regardless of who it stars? That's my main point about all this, and I think its funny you think I'm getting you all wrong about what your point was, I understand it perfectly and can understand where you are coming from and why you would want to see new characters, I just simply explained why Nintendo uses Mario so frequently and how in most cases you can't really call it milking because they use Mario and friends in so many different ways. Also I've been insulting simply because I saw your annoyance and how you were getting worked up and trying to hard to disprove what I had to say when this is an online forum, who cares what my opinion is or how I feel about things, and who cares what you feel and if you do or don't buy the Wii. Like I said before I'm sure sales will suffer because you went with a 360 and as long as you are happy with your purchase then what does it matter?
EDIT:
Way to totally miss my point, I never said that it'll be ok if every game out there has Mario in it but the ones that do I see no real reason to avoid simply because Mario is on the cover. Also Mario doesn't fit every ****of game and I'll start to buy into the milkage thing abit more when I see Mario set outside his typical off the wall games and start doing games more along the lines of Grand Theft Auto, Half-Life 2, Halo, Baldur's Gate, and games like that, until then your point fails because you took it to the extreme when I simply said that in the manner and the ****of games Nintendo uses Mario it fits him so instead of running the risk of a game flopping because people don't recognize the game, throw in Mario and them to make sure it sells. Beyond that there's no real reason to care since the game itself is fun.

so your saying putting halo on mountain Dew isnt milking?
that mario party isnt milking?
i mean its not what they usually do
funny isnt that part of the definition of milking?
You have explained why nintendo uses mario so frequently, and that is exactly the same reason why i dont buy nintendo games anymore
oh and by the way, im angry because i just cant understand how can you people be fine with all of this, it just makes me crazy how stagnant people can be, in my opinion people like you who just keep gobling up mario games that were the reason why nintendo lost last gen (and dont talk about this gen sales , because you are not to thank for that, the casuals are)
Now you are just being lazy and not reading what I have to say since I already said Mario Party is milking and has pretty much been the same thing since the first game came out on the N64 and I already said I do wish they would just discontinue the series. And putting the Master Chief on a Mountain Dew can isn't milking, its just over advertising and over hyping something, and basically selling out. When you can come back and honestly say you read everything I posted please continue to argue with me over nothing, I made my point and you just failed to understand what I had to say is all.kejigoto

Nintendo took 22 years to make 8 mario platformers, 20 years to make 7 console zelda's.the problem i believe is that if we exclude metal gear and Final Fantasy none of those franchises are over 20 years
Edit:
one last thing, Halo and Cod milking? none of them have over 4 games, how is that milking? how many zeldas or marios are there by now?
st1ka
sony took 6 years to make 5 ratchets, ms took 6 years to make 3 halos, sony took 4 years to make 3 gow's, capcom took 6 years to make 4 dmc's, etc. Shall I keep going? OWNED.
This of course does not negate in any way how Nintendo overuses its franchises. Then again, this argument is mostly seen or used that way by Nintendo haters. Or at least that's what I usually see anywhere.
It's very interesting to see a gamer discredit a Mario or Zelda for that exact reason and in another thread, proceeds to give props to a game like MGS4. It's mostly a hilarious overabundance of hypocrisy.
Making sequels of popular games is a good thing, i don't call that milkage. Using a popular character to sell crap spin off games is what i would call milkage and Nintendo is the master of this 'art'.
Tykain
Sure sequels aren't necessarily milkage. And yes your definition above is surely milkage, except that a lot of those spin off titles are regarded by many a gaming media to have an average quality, even though I mostly never touch them or am I that interested in playing them in the first place.
*Looks at avatar* In any case, we're talking about complete spin off games here that have nothing to do with Nintendo's main franchises at their core, only at their surfaced image. You cannot say the same over franchises like FF however... wich I cannot even name the number of remakes, tied with spin offs, that have appeared on this gens time frame alone.
The over abundance of milkage in the SE series in its main franchises at this point is tremendous. They may not be the masters in milking its main franchises with spin off games that have little to do with them at the core, but they sure as hell milk their main games with a ferver that is hardly compared to any other company in the industry.
[QUOTE="KhanhAgE"][QUOTE="JuarN18"][QUOTE="st1ka"]the problem i believe is that if we exclude metal gear and Final Fantasy none of those franchises are over 20 years

4 zeldas
3 halos
2 Marios
4 Call Of Duty (without counting some spinoffs)
WTH?
There's way more than just 4 Zelda and 2 Marios (2 Marios only? The thought is almost laughable).
2 platforming marios (SMG and SMS)
and 4 zeldas (WW,TP,MC, and PH)
If you're talking about platforming Mario here's the list:
Mario Bros. (NES)
Super Mario Bros. (NES)
Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES)
Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
Super Mario Land (GB)
Super Mario World (SNES)
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (GB)
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES)
Super Mario 64 (N64)
Super Mario Sunshine (GC)
New Super Mario Bros. (NDS)
Super Mario Glalaxy (Wii)
If you want to exclude the handhelds that's 10 Mario games.
If you want to be even more selective and only include the 3D platformers that's 3 Mario games.
I'm not going to include the his first appearance in a video game, Donkey Kong, even though he was the main playable character.
Other than that there has been a total of 12 2D and 3D platforming Mario.
As for Zelda, there's more than 4 mate. Considering how you mentioned MC and PH (Minish Cap and Phantom Hourglass) I guess you're not being selective with this one. There has been 14 Zelda games.
oh? so now it has to fit the character?
i tought you said as long as the gameplay is good it doesnt matter whether or not its mario

As I said before you are just being lazy, so I went and found what I said before and cut off some of the fat so you could read what I already posted thus making your newest and latest points... well pointless.

Are we done here yet or are you going to continue to carry on and on about this and try to make me out to be the idiot when you just aren't simply reading what is posted and attempting to win a disagreement you lost many pages ago?
the problem i believe is that if we exclude metal gear and Final Fantasy none of those franchises are over 20 years
Edit:
one last thing, Halo and Cod milking? none of them have over 4 games, how is that milking? how many zeldas or marios are there by now?
st1ka
Halo Wars.
Call of Duty
Call of Duty: United Offensive
Call of Duty: Finest Hour
Call of Duty 2
Call of Duty 2: Big Red One
Call of Duty 3
Call of Duty: Roads to Victory
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty 5
Making a high quality sequel like Halo 3 or Metal Gear Solid 4 is NOT milkage. It is a sequel. A good sequel does not equal milkage.
Milkage is when you make low-budget games in the hope that the franchise's popularity will help sell it regardless of the quality. Would you call Halo 3 or MGS4 "low budget" games? No, these are quality sequels. However, Halo Kart, Crysis Party, Resident Evil Table Tennis and Metal Gear Solitaire will be classified as milkage.

None of the companies that developed those games have been around for half the time as nintendo (when it comes to Console gaming atleast). The only reason Nintendo releases MORE "recycled" titles is because they have a been around longer to create MORE franchises.
[QUOTE="JuarN18"][QUOTE="KhanhAgE"]2 platforming marios (SMG and SMS)
and 4 zeldas (WW,TP,MC, and PH)
KhanhAgE
I only count last gen and current gen marios and zeldas, why? because call of duty and halo franchises start last gen, so i just wanted to compare that...
btw i forgot DS marios sorry for that :P
Mario was created in 1981, hes first officail game was in 1983.
Donkey Kong was also created in 1981
The Legend of Zelda was created in 1986
Metroid was created in 1986
and it goes on
Thats milkage my friend

Yes and not really. It's definitely milkage when you have to pay for a title that does not exceed or equal its worth in comparison to how it costs. Like the Wii for instance, even tho I'm mostly getting that out of my arse with no proff whatsoever. Still, judging by the consoles performance, Nintendo is definitely sucking money out of it. Then again, they are gaining what is called as profit.
MGS4 is not milkage? I remember a time when Kojima used to say a hell of a lot, on how its last mgs game would be the last in the seires. Do you know why Kojima still continues to work on the series? Because he can milk the franchise to his hearts content and its fans will be there on day one with the money out of their wallets to get it.
Hell Dirge of Cerberus could contain a high ammount of production values, a very high quality to it and it would still be utmost milkage of a number in a franchise that has seen days of glorious sucess. A game that has only gained life exactly because of it.
Milking implies squirting the milk out of the udders of the same cow. So basically, any sequel, spiritual successor, or products made under that brand name is milked. Nintendo is technically the king of milkage due to the spin-offs with Mario and the fact that their games branch from console to handheld. However, Nintendo has been around longer, and with two platforms to work on they should not be the only ones accused of milkage. If Sony or Microsoft had been around this long, you cannot tell me that they wouldn't have milked their fair amount.
I also believe milkage includes companies creating a new IP that burrows too many elements from its counterparts. For example, if Bungie created what they claim is an all-new shooter series that has a lot of similarities to Halo, then it would basically be a new game in a different coat of paint, thereby being milkage.
So while Nintendo is the king of milkage, I hope nobody will foolishly claim other companies are not doing the same. Everyone is guilty of it, and do you know why? Because the public likes it. They want to see their favourite hero continue his journey, or see this imaginative world played out again, simply because they like these things. Like cows in the barn, some of us like to be milked, and it should not always be coined as a negative term.

I agree with you. However, your definition of the word "milking" is slightly different to mine, but since I respect your opinion I will go by your definition then. In this case, I can see "good milking" (high quality sequels that are worth our money) and "bad milking" (crap sequels and spinoffs made on a low budget and riding on the popularity of the brandname). Good milking actually makes people happy (we all love a good sequel), but bad milking hurts the game franshise and disappoints us (I don't want to play a Halo Ping Pong game). Well, thats my 2 cents :)
I'm starting to see "milkage" as a good thing. Seeing all of these quality titles(posted by the TC and many others), and them being considered milkers, makes me happy companies milk.
I think I'm going to have myself a nice, tall, cold glass of milk.

When do you think Halo's gonna end? When it starts to suck. What about COD? Same there. MGS? Final Fantasty? God of War? The thing is, the franchises will end when they start to suck. In the case of Mario, Zelda, and Metroid, they haven't started to suck yet, so therefore they're gonna continue to make them. Nintendo milks and so does everyone else.

Nintendo isn't the only one to bring their games from console to handheld. But, otherwise I agree.

Oh but your definition is definitely correct. The definition I used may have been different, but they were only used to ammount more examples to the definition in itself. That's why I said yes and no. Any of these possibilities fall into what the word milkage originally means and if that doesn't make it milkage then I don't know what does.
Coming from the word in itself Kojima is milking the MG series, what it means is that according to him he could have finished the series before MGS4. There was even a time when he backtracked on saying that MGS4 would not be the last game in the MGS series. Then, he finally decided on this game being the last of the MGS series, but not the MG series in itself. He means that the will not work on the series anymore (probably because he is sick of them, I don't know) but the series will continue to be used by konami and a profit will still be gained by them in the end.
And yes I agree, MGS4 is definitely good milking :P and despite of what I said above, the money would still be out of my wallet on day one of the MGS4 release :) .
I dont think u know what milkage is. Its making u buy more and more things to go with the initial system u got. Or game. So While the Wii does milk u (60 bucks for a noninnovative controller is rediculous) Microsoft takes the crown. Not only does their system not last (RRoD). But in order to make the 360 equal (in terms of package) to the Ps3 you would need to purchase a bigger HDD (they dont sell anything other 20gb and 120gb. tho) A wireless networking adaptor, Xbox Live, and rechargable controller batteries. Just the networking adaptor, a yr of xbl, and the rechargable batteries come to about 170 bucks. So which is really more expensive?
A 40gb PS3 $399
-Built In WiFi
-Free Online play (which in my monthes of testing is better than XBL)
-Built in Rechargable batteries on the controllers
Total - $399
or
A 20gb Xbox 360 $349
+$100 Wireless Network Adaptor
+$50 for a yr of XBL
+$20 for 2 rechargable batteries for your controllers
Total + $519
The xbox comes to be $120 bucks more than the PS3. So who is the king of milkage? Its an inferior system (if u dont want to admit its less powerful Ill let that go, but u cant argue the failure rates).
Im guessing either alot of people dont notice theyre spending more for their xbox than for a Ps3 or the "exclusives" are really worth the $120 bucks more and enduring RRoD. I give kudos to Microsoft tho, they can sell anything for any price they want basically.
[QUOTE="kejigoto"][QUOTE="st1ka"]I have been trying to maintain a rational conversation with you, but your snide comments are starting to anger me, look at this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_games
how can you say you are not tired of the characters? othen then metroid and the franchises that nintendo has abandoned or recently introduced im sick of nintendo characters, its just milkage after milkagest1ka
Having fun?
just so you know you got to me for all the wrong reasons, if anything im even more appaled by mario then i was before theis conversation.

Wow that made me laugh. Sig worthy I believe.
i like it how you convinently ignored the second part of the sentence but hey i guess insulting is better then rational discussion for you isnt it?
just one last question, if Gameplay is all that matters then why dont we just make the main character in every game mario? how about? instead of master chief we have master mario
instead of the unamed hero on Baldurs gate we have mario
instead of gordon freeman we have mario
i meant isnt this your perfect world?
you're complaining that mario is in so many games that are quality titles and you're sick of seeing him, and yet i guarantee you haven't played all his games, so your point is?
no that's damage control. I would rather play mario kart than a pos like halo 3. see? that's an opinion. just because you don't like those games doesn't mean they are bad. mario kart is a great series, but it's very casual, hence the lower scores. most review sites would rather play 10000 fps a year than even try to enjoy all types of games.Making a high quality sequel like Halo 3 or Metal Gear Solid 4 is NOT milkage. It is a sequel. A good sequel does not equal milkage.
