Hey guys, I recently came across an article http://www.retrocollect.com/Articles/deus-ex-still-the-best-game-ever.html

And I have to say.....

I completely agree, Deus Ex is the PINNACLE of choice in game play, I have played it like over 20 times and I still discover new things and new ways to play. People always talk about the Half Lifes, the Zelda's, The marios, the Halos, the Uncharteds, the Mass effects, etc but yet people seem to dismiss this masterpiece over more high profile games.

You can literally play any way you want. Deus ex is a shooter, a platformer, a stealth game, an RPG, etc You can literally do ANYTHING you want and every choice branches off into another set of choices both gameplay and plot wise. This includes killing a few major characters early on. If you have not purchased this game yet, DO IT NOW. I don't care if your not a PC gamer, if you don't like shooters, if your a graphic whore that only plays current gen games, there is no reason not to buy this game. ..

Speaking of graphics hears a neat guide I found to maximize graphics and performance on Deus Ex: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1235278

So what say you, System Warriors?

I played it for the first time a year ago and beat it. Great game no doubt, but I see too many flaws to praise it like some do. The VA is atrocious at times, which is the most obvious flaw. IMO it and the new Deus Ex overstay their welcome.

One of the best no doubt.

Not "the" best but it's up there. If only HR didn't have such pace breaking bossfights.

Something tells me you havnt even played it. Hasnt aged well? That explains why I enjoyed my layest playthgrough more than I enjoyed Halo Reach.

The only thing that hasnt aged well are the graphics, which were outdated the day the game came out. Luckily, there are graphic mods to make it look alright if you saw the link in my first post.

Yeah, the boss fights (along with somwhat dated visuals) held HR back a bit no doubt, still my GOTY though.

Liked System Shock 2 way more.

Also, playing DX:HR right now, the story and music are incredible, but constantly being in corridors has put me off the game and ive just reached Hengsha.

no we musn't. if it wants to be the best game ever, it must hold up today. and it doesn't. not even close. that's why i really liked HR. it grabbed what i liked of DE and polished/streamlined it.

It holds up VERY well today, DE HR came close IMO in beating to original, and it was pretty damn close too. The boss fights and the fact that it wasn't as complex as the original held it back though. (althogh the boss fight in the missing link was good though).

you should take off your nostalgia goggles. the game plays and controls on a level of clunkiness so bad it's hard to describe. the AI is bad to the point of being obnoxious. and there are the obvious audiovisual issues.

It has begun to age rather poorly now. But it still is and always will be a great accomplishment. With that said, System Shock 2 runs circles around it.

Nah. The concept is one of the best ever. But the game itself, the whole package, was never the best ever. Many of it's elememts had clear flaws.

when you can stack boxes to fall in a black hole of computer glitches, or when the game has the world's most bizarre keybinding layout, i call it unpolished. and the game already looked dated back then, but i digress. controls are very poor, gameplay is very clunky, AI is obnoxious, among other things. it is unpolished.

Deus Ex is pretty overrated by the community. I played it back then when it was at its most relevant and did not find it as compelling as alot of you. I thought it was an excellent game, but best game ever? No way..

I don't agree. It hasn't aged perfectly, and it has some clear flaws, particularly the AI. That said, I do believe people are being too harsh in this thread. Deus Ex is still a masterpiece, and, even with the flawed parts, it's still much more than the sum of its parts. I cannot label it the "best," however. There are too many brilliant games to consider for that title.

Hey system warriors!! I would love to get more incite into why people liked/disliked the original deus ex. I LOVED Deus Ex:HR, thought the story was interesting, music and voice acting was great. The game just had great atmosphere. I even loved the at-times wonky gameplay mechanics. However, when I look into the original Deus Ex, it just seems like it hasn't aged well and I'm skeptical (although I would love to be wrong). What do you guys think? How would it compare for someone who never played the original?

HR is very good, no doubt. The original is a bit more complex though, with more paths to complete a mission and more factors such as multitools, lockpicking, wtc

For me it is still the best game ever made. Mass Effect had a great story, Stalker had great combat and atmosphere...lots of games have lots of things.

It is flawed and it is old now, but there has still never been a game that has surpassed it as an experience for me. The music still sends a tingle down my spine. It still has, despite the crappy graphics and dodgy game mechanics, more atmosphere than 99% of games combined.

I hope one day it is surpassed, but it will take something incredibly special. DXHR was great, I loved it and it was probably my GOTY, however despite being vastly superior to the first in a lot of technical ways, it still didn't quite reach the heights of the original.

Deus Ex is still the greatest game ever made. There is just something very special about it.

Deues Ex 1 is overrated, it was an amazing concept, but mediocre execution. The shooting sucks, the game is far too unbalanced, the VA is terrible, the pacing of the story was atrocious, the characters were all one dimensional, weak endgame, and gotta love those invinicble NPCs, so much for freedom of choice. Its funny when people rat on the sequel when its got a far better story and better characters and a better finale. Its too bad they removed the "RPG elements" but kept the clunk. HR is clearly the best in the franchise. Except for boss battles, its DX done right.

yes and this is what is appealing to me. I guess I'm more asking if the mechanics of gameplay hold up. Also, I really loved that the world in HR was very alive and detailed. I know the game is older so it obviously wont have all the same detail, but I am concerned it may be a sterile world. For example, cs_assault is somewhat of a sterile looking city level in counterstrike. its no italy, thats for sure.

I don't think it was the best game even 12 years ago, let alone now. WAY too many things that are poor in it for me to forgive, even for the time it was made. It definitely is a very interesting game, and a good one, but hardly the best.

The original is inferior in the obvious ways to DXHR, graphics, mechanics etc etc. However, the original had certain qualities that are hard to describe without an essay of explanation. All I'll say is that if you like games and you liked DXHR, you absolutely must play the original. It might be hard to get into to begin with, with the initial dodgy aim for the guns etc and the dodgy graphics. It is worth your time and attention though. When I say it is the greatest game I've ever played, there is no doubt at all in my mind. That's incredible for a 12 year old game with so many flaws. It's just a very special game that has never been surpassed in many many ways. Story, atmosphere, music...just bewilderingly good for a video game. One thing I never forget about it is the ability it gives you to make your own decisions at points without walking your through it, without giving you a radial dial to answer one way or another. You are left to your own initiative to do something or not do something with no real prompt at all. Hard to explain without spoiling it.

One thing it really has though, is a sense of complex mystery. Of genuine intrigue.

Play it, complete it, you won't regret it.

The mechanics weren't particularly good even then, but in other ways they are sublimely good. Most of the time you will be using stealth and sniping/headshots etc. For which it is absolutely fine. Unless you want to go throgh the game as if you are playing COD, you should find it enjoyable. You have to level up your gun skills though, so initially your aim will be wobbly and awkward. It gets better though.

In my opinion, in some ways the characters/world have more life to them than any other game. Obviously there are limitations though that come with a 12 year old game. It's very hard to explain much without spoiling it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOIx_i8dTLA - video of totalbiscuit playing the first level. It's a good video demonstrating some elements of the game. Watch it and see what you think. Just understand that there is a very good reason a lot of people believe it is the greatest game ever made.

In all honesty Deus Ex:HR is the best in the series. I didn't think HR could be better than the original but for me it has surpassed it. Besides the boss fights, it is the better game. HR is by far one of my favorite games of all time and I would love to see how the next Deus Ex will be.

I wish some developer would make a cyberpunk/steampunk open-world RPG Elder Scrolls style game, in Deus Ex style, that would be amazing. :o

In terms of what it does with its gameplay, story and choice systems? Sure. Technically? F**k no. Deus Ex is a textbook example of a game that does not age well, at all.

There's no such thing as "Best Game Ever."

Haven't played the original, but I doubt I'd think the world of it 12 years on after playing DX:HR.
