Hasn't Sony dropped the price more than anyone to date?dsmccracken

Never as severely as this.

Didn't the PS2 drop it's price several times last gen? When was it ever desperate? Between rounds of kicking the competition's a$$?

dsmccracken

It dropped its price after it became cheaper to produce. As time passes, mass prodction of a particular product becomes less costly.

I know the pro is $299.99 Canadian, but is it dropping more?

I don't think so. Right now the 360 pro is $299 here in the US, but that's only until the 20 GB runs out, in which case it will be back at $349 with the 60 GB. But, if this price drop rumor is true, then the 60 GB pro will stay at $299.

Its funny how the 360 has not taken away any features and continues to add some (HDMI) and yet still drop the price.

Never as severely as this.

This is all just rumors. So a $79 price drop is severe? The 360 made it's debut at $399 and 3 years later it might hit $299. The PS3 dropped from $599 to $499 in only 1 year. How is that not as severe?

Actually the severness is not in only price drops but feature drops and hardware drops to get there too. now that spells deparation huh? Sony

The 60 gig dropped in price because it was apart of the clearance sale, which isn't a price drop. It was being replaced by another $599 model that was 80 gigs, which has only recently dropped in price--But not in only one year.

And please, by all means, just leave out the fact that the PS3 has been beating the 360 in sales. That's a pretty big factor. Also the fact that the 360 didn't have to compete with the PS3 during the first year of this generation. Now that they have to deal with a more popular PS3, they're cutting price percentages.

that would make sense. microsoft wouldn't say the 60 gig will also cost $299, then everyone would wait until the it comes out instead of buying a 20 gig. they'll probably drop the 60 gigs price without much prior announcement.

Fair enough. Now if you'd please read the second paragraph instead of trying to fall back on, "It's a tie!"

The circumstances here still differ. Greatly.

The thing about the Playstation 3 is that they never price-cut the original lower-end model, but instead offered more and more features over time at the $500 price point. For people who value backwards compatibility (and extra USB ports, SACD support...), they've never been able to buy a PS3 for under $500.

he might have to check his information. Unless the arcade version is not selling at all, I don't see MS dropping this SKU. Being it is their bargain basement entry into HD gaming.

I was thinking of getting a 360 Arcade unit, I wouldn't bother with XBL again now that I can play online for free with my PS3 but there are some 360 exclusives that I wouldn't mind playing. I'll have to think about it when I get the money, I was considering a PSP or Wii aswell.

Then it's interesting. Why did you say it, unless you're claiming that this is the case? It was quite obviously your intent - otherwise there's no reason to make such a remark.

Thing is, pricedrops can be a sign of desperation, a "combat" maneouver, or simply a reflection of the value of a console, which will be reduced over time in normal conditions. Considering that microsoft right now seems to have managed to start being profitable *and* that they pretty much have a record for slowest price decline in consoles, it makes desperation seem quite unlikely.

Or was sony very desperate in the PS2 days? They dropped the price quicker.

Thing is, that is absolutely incorrect. An effective reduction in price (or increase in value for the same price) is the standard for pretty much every electronic consumer product out there. The Xbox360 has been reducing it's price at a pace slower than the average by a very, very large margin.

For comparison, at 2.5 years, the Ps2 had dropped to 60% of it's original price (300 to 180), while the 360 has dropped to around 75% of it's original price in the most extreme case (pro model, from 400 to 300), and that's with a slightly larger timeframe. In the case of the core and Elite, the price drops have been even smaller, though in the case of the core, value was increased too, so I guess it could be said to have the same ratio.

Sony hasn't made any price drops this year. In fact, unlike Microsoft which slashed the 20 gigabyte price to $299, Sony specifically refused to lower the price of the 40 gigabyte SKU. The 80 gigabyte being offered for $399 is just the 40 gigabyte SKU with more space, which Sony calls "adding more value to consumers".

A lot of people are waiting for a genuine price cut under $400 for the PS3.
