2008 has been a disappointing year for Xbox 360 and Microsoft

If anyone looks at Xbox 360 without any bias, there is no denying that 2008 has been disappointing for Xbox 360 and Microsoft.

So far in 2008

1) Microsft lost the format war.With HD-DVD dead, there is no way whatsoever for Xbox 360 owners to watch disk-based HD movies. On the other hand, with Blu-ray, the PS3 is the only console capable of playing the best versions of HD movies on the market.

2) Xbox 360 lacks AAAA/AAA exclusives.(Small downloadable games with PS2 graphics don't count). On the other hand, the PS3 has Metal Gear Solid 4 and Little Big Planet.

3) Xbox 360 no longer enjoys having multiplatform games that look or play better than the PS3 versions. In fact, with optional installs, multiplatform games, overall, slightly look or play better (less loading times) on the PS3. Some multiplatform games to be ported will look and play significantly better than the 360 versions. One guaranteed AAA title will very soon arrive in the form of Bioshock 2. It came a year late, but it has improved graphics and additional contents. Another game, Eternal Sonata will also come to the PS3 signficantly improved.

4) Undeniable proof that Xbox 360 has limited the potential of multiplatform games. Because Xbox 360's use of last-gen DVD 9, developer Id lacks the space needed to make their game RAGE according to their original vision. As such, Id had to alter their multiplatform game because of Xbox 360's limitation.

5) Microsoft has appeared desperate. After seeing the PS3 outsold the 360 all over the world, Microsoft, in the span of 3 months has had 2 price cuts and one games bundle (Xbox 360 Pro Holiday Bundle 2008 Includes 60GB Hard Drive). 3 promotions in 3 months!!! How is this not desperate? Perhaps the latest bundle is Microsoft's acknowledgement that the price cuts has moved fewer consoles than they had hoped. Indeed, according to the latest NPD, despite the price cuts last month Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 by less than 50%. This is a disappointment, folks; Xbox 360 underperformed as expected.

6) It is becoming clearer and clearer that the most technically advanced and most innovated console games are found not on the 360 but on the PS3. Metal Gear Solid and LittleBigPlanet say hi!

If theres one underperfming console of this generation, its definitely the PS3. Just look at the stark contrast to what the PS2 is compared to the PS3 and then look at what the Xbox was to what the 360 is now...

In short: 360 > Xbox; PS2 > PS3... Talk about twist of fate.

Xbox 360 a disappointment?

Shouldn't the console that was hyped to dominate the year be a disappointment? Seeing as it.. hasn't.

The 360 certainly lost the momentum this year, but they're gaining it back rather quickly. It's doing fine.

I will say though that I think Microsoft leaning on 3rd party games so much could very well end up biting them in the arse. Sony's first party pretty much owns MS's first party, and that's something MS really needs to work on if you ask me.

Me three. Further, it's only gotten better as the year progresses. The problem is that according to cows, this was supposed to be the year that the PS3 miraculously jumped from third to first and that the 360 was to take its place in the trash heap of gaming history. They will never accept the fact that there is a bona fide competetor to the PS3. The 360 survived the RROD debacle. Despite the narrowing gap, it still has (slightly) better looking mulitplats. Bioshock was promised to have graphical improvements over the 360 because of an extra year of development, but after playing through the demo several times, it doesn't hold a candle to the 360 version. I have some very enjoyable games for my PS3, but my 360 library dwarfs it quality, quantity, and overall enjoyment.

Listen, I'm not hating on the PS3. I have one. It's a great system. It's just that I'm sick and tired of these "360 is doomed" threads when it's the cheapest next-gen console with the biggest and best library of titles. Put this in your sig if you want; the 360 isn't going anywhere and it will remain a great console for the remaining years of this generation.

There was only one worthwhile exclusive title released on the PS3 during the summer season (MGS4), while the 360 has had 3AA titles released for its summer season. While PS3 is starting off their holiday season sooner than the 360 with the release of LBP, it will soon have to compete against such titles as Gears 2, Fable 2, Banjo, etc..

3) Xbox 360 no longer enjoys having multiplatform games that look or play better than the PS3 versions. In fact, with optional installs, multiplatform games, overall, slightly look or play better (less loading times) on the PS3. Some multiplatform games to be ported will look and play significantly better than the 360 versions. One guaranteed AAA title will very soon arrive in the form of Bioshock 2. It came a year late, but it has improved graphics and additional contents. Another game, Eternal Sonata will also come to the PS3 signficantly improved.

In 2008 games have had large differences between there multiplat versions, the PS3 version of GTA4 wasn't even native HD and ran at a lower frame rate, while games like UT3 had whole buildings missing in the PS3 version when compared to the 360 or PC versions.

4) Undeniable proof that Xbox 360 has limited the potential of multiplatform games. Because Xbox 360's use of last-gen DVD 9, developer Id lacks the space needed to make their game RAGE according to their original vision. As such, Id had to alter their multiplatform game because of Xbox 360's limitation.

ID has already stated several times that the PS3's ram is holding back the game, ID also said that none of the game is going to be cut due to DVDs. It is also a fact that the PS3 has held back many mulitplat games due to it being harder to dev for as seen in the development of GTA4 which was 4 months behind its 360 counter part, and the far cry team needing 14 people working on the PS3 port and only allowing 3 on the 360 port.

5) Microsoft has appeared desperate. It took the 360 almost 3 years to make the same drop as seen in the PS3's first year on the market. The 360 has also outsold the PS3 in all regions, including japan for the last few months and is expected to do so until the end of the year.

Im guessing that your trying to say that Metal Gear Solid is the most technically advanced game, but that is far from a fact, not only does MGS4 have a native resoltution that is below HD, it also has a average frame rate below 30FPS, some terrible environment textures, Lower polygon characters than gears 1, and has to go through several installs that can last up to 8mins.

I also don't know if people really considered LBP to be innovative due to the fact that there has been many games that allowed users to create and share content including such things as maps, vehicles, etc...

1 so what if ms lost the format war sony hasnt won over yet with dvd still being made lol

2 lacks aaa? lets have a look ,, gears 2 , banjo nuts and bolts , dn3d , plus saints row 2( just recently) quantum of solace nov 6 .. music speaks for it self every 360 game supports it unlike ps3

3 wrong. gta iv looks darker on ps3, , , then it does on 360,,i tested and own both versions , on their brightest settings,

oh and about disc installs, 360s getting that november 11th -17th any time around there,

and ign has proven so many times ps3 games look a little worst to on par with the 360 versions ,

yes few games like alone in the dark have updates to em , well thats because you guys have to wait longer

1) MS took no side nor invested much money into the format war and believes digital distrobution is the way to go, so how exacly did they lose there?

2) LoL you named 2 games, one of them is being rumoured to being ported and the 360 has way more AAAEs then the PS3 so you fail again...

3) Microsoft is adding the game install feature and making it OPTIONAL, and the 360 is still the prefered dev console for larger publishing companies like EA and Epic (who design the Unreal Engine that probably 30% of all games use).

4) All consoles have limited potential as they are not uprdeable, only a PC has unlimited potential based on how much money you are willing to spend. Also note the PS3 has limited potential with less Ram and a softer Video Card....

5) With the raise in demand in blu-ray players and at the cheaper price the PS3 player did sell more, however MS lowering prices (due to better cost reduction techniques, something Sony doesn't know how to do) and trying to establish a strong brand through marketing MS has climbed out on top, this isn't desperate this is good business practice. This post on the other hand is desperate to make you feel like your PS3 purchase was justifiable even though no one cares.

Some multiplatform games to be ported will look and play significantly better than the 360 versions. One guaranteed AAA title will very soon arrive in the form of Bioshock 2. It came a year late, but it has improved graphics and additional contents. Another game, Eternal Sonata will also come to the PS3 signficantly improved.

4) Undeniable proof that Xbox 360 has limited the potential of multiplatform games. Because Xbox 360's use of last-gen DVD 9, developer Id lacks the space needed to make their game RAGE according to their original vision. As such, Id had to alter their multiplatform game because of Xbox 360's limitation.

5) Microsoft has appeared desperate. After seeing the PS3 outsold the 360 all over the world, Microsoft, in the span of 3 months has had 2 price cuts and one games bundle (Xbox 360 Pro Holiday Bundle 2008 Includes 60GB Hard Drive). 3 promotions in 3 months!!! How is this not desperate? Perhaps the latest bundle is Microsoft's acknowledgement that the price cuts has moved fewer consoles than they had hoped. Indeed, according to the latest NPD, despite the price cuts last month Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 by less than 50%. This is a disappointment, folks; Xbox 360 underperformed as expected.

6) It is becoming clearer and clearer that the most technically advanced and most innovated console games are found not on the 360 but on the PS3. Metal Gear Solid and LittleBigPlanet say hi!

3 - If I'm not mistaken, wasnt it the IGN review of the PS3 version of Bioshock that rated it lower than the 360 because of graphics? At least, I'm pretty sure I heard that. But, hey, we dont need facts here, do we? You are OBVIOUSLY assuming things with fanboy goggles, so why cant I?

4 - Didnt ID state that the 360 was NOT the reason they couldnt make RAGE to their vision? If you want to go that route, didnt Kojima state that he also couldnt make MGS4 to his "vision" either because the PS3 didnt have the hardware for what he wanted?? You have no undeniable proof.

5 - 3 promotions in 3 months is considered good business sense. I dont see Sony doing the same thing, and it will affect them. There have even been discussions here in SW where people are wondering exactly what the heck Sony is doing with their promotional team. But honestly, anyone with common sense will look at your post and see that it screams that you are highly insecure with your choice of console. But point number 5 here gives us "Undeniable proof" of that. :)

You know, it seems to me like you are trying WAY too hard to be something akin to Renegade. However, Renegade at least researches what he states on here, and puts up links to back up what he says (regardless of how vague the source, he does still do this at least) and can garner at least some credibility to what he says. You, however, need to look up the definition of credibility and take a few notes.

Xbox 360 has yet to get one AAA exclusive game this year. Kinda sad considering it's entering it's third year on the market. PS3 on the hand has two and has even more lined up for next year.-Renegade

Ok, I guess I will have to take back what I said about you. You have better sense than to say something like this, with Fable 2, Gears 2, Left 4 dead, and Banjo right around the corner. At least two of these will be AAA, and you know it.
