Wrong, it did indeed have competition: the spectre of the PS3 and Wii. Every gamer who held off on buying a 360, either to wait for the PS3 / Wii or to at least simply sit on the fence and see how the console war plays out after all 3 had launched, IS A LOST SALE DUE TO COMPETITION, regardles of whether the competitor's units were on the shelf yet or not. How does no one get this?

If you're thirsty and go into a store to buy a Coke, and all they have is Pepsi, you'll probably buy a Pepsi. Bigger ticket items, unlike convenience items, don't work like that. People will indeed wait for their prefered console (you did didn't you?), so how you can't see that this qualifies as competition is beyond me. Average Joe Schmo does not have a "preferred console". And Average Joe Schmo is the buyer that drives the rediculous sales along with Little Billy's parents. These two groups are just looking for the newest gaming machine that'll put a smile on someone's face. They are not staunchly brand loyal like a few idiots are. I think that Joe Schmo would stay loyal to the PS3 if all else is equal, as it is familiar, a known quantity. PS2 dominating last gen was no accident. Casuals are not as rabidly loyal as fanboys here in SW, but brand loyalty and recognition does count for something (again, all other factors being equal). The problem is, as it is turning out, not all other factors ARE equal (price and games against Sony, BluRay and HDMI against MS, just to name two each).PS2 is a "known quantity" not the PS3. The average buyer is smart enough to know that this is "different" then the PS2 in that it is new. People are skeptical of new stuff until they have seen it all over the place and gain a sense that it has proven itself in one way or another. Even if this is following the footsteps of the PS2 there is still skepticism. Consoles are not like car brands.
And no the PS2 dominating was not an accident by any stretch. However the factors that caused it to dominate are not the same this time around. Each company is in a totally different environment then Sony was in 5 years ago. To the point of being upredictable.
HDMI is not even common knowledge yet. For people like you and me it's important, but for the guy that just got a big HDTV because it was the lowest price, they have no clue if their TV even has HDMI or not.
The first thing the average guy will see when looking at the PS3 and Xbox360 next to each other is the price. After that they look at what games they can take home with them that day. These two factors probably around 90% of a buyers decision. That other %10 covers the "perks" that such as HDMI, HD Space (most people don't even realize what the HD space will be used for), Bluu-Ray, bells, whistles.
To this person, the 360 wins.
To people that actually investigate a little bit and begin to weigh the other factors, the PS3 has the "potential" to win down the road when more games are out, and even more potential when the Blu-Ray factor kicks in.
