This is strictly for consoles only--not handhelds nor PC.

There will be three games that will make this generation-- by that, I mean a BIG game that will do everything right: a game that will bring innovations to a certain genre. These three games will change the way we play, and interact. These games will be the new GTAs, the new Halos.

There will also be three games that break this generation--by that, I mean a BIG game that will provide little to nothing in terms of innovations, and significant changes in comparison to their predecessors or other games in their respective genres. This does not mean that the games will be bad--these games might change the way we play and interact in a negative way.

There are also three games that are in a neutral position. These games may or may not  MAKE or BREAK. Remember, I am not trying to "bash" a game. I am only trying to spark a discussion--to make a point. So please use this as a rule of thumb.

Anyways, here they are:

===============================================

Games that Will Make This Generation

1. Bioshock (360/PC)

Bioshock puts you in the middle of an underwater-utopia. This game has a good chance of making this generation by successfully blending a phenomenal atmosphere and various gameplay elements into one package. Bioshock will require critical thinking, as there will be multiple ways to take down your enemies. Bioshock Producer, Ken Levine says that players will begin to wonder why other games haven't successfully done all of the things that are incorporated in Bioshock. This game will make this generation, and developers will begin to make more atmospheric games after the success of Bioshock.

2. Army of Two (360/PS3)

EA suprisingly came out and announced a brand new shooter, Army of Two last year. This is not your average shooter, EA is developing one of the most intiguing, innovative, and interesting shooters in years. In Army of Two, you play as "guns for hire chums" (EGM#206) Tyson Rios and Elliot Salem. Yes, this is meant to be a co-operative game. This game will be developed by ex-Ubisoft Montreal memebers (the ones who created Splinter Cell), and the main focus is to bring out a fully co-operative game where each player relies on his teammate. If your teammate is dying, you can give him CPR. While your teamate is giving you CPR, the player dying has a near death experience and is supposed to complete a minigame in order to avoid death. This game will MAKE the generation by introducing a new type of genre: fully co-operative games where teamwork is your only key to success. After the success of Army of Two, other developers will begin to use the same formula.

3. Assassin's Creed (360/PS3/PC)

At first, you will think that Assassin's Creed is just a Splinter Cell esque game with a different setting. If you think this, you are absolutely incorrect. Assassin's Creed will provide an incredibly unreal experience that no other game has ever provided. One of the big innovations are the realistic NPCs. Hiding in the dark is no longer a solution for you--you will have to blend into a lively crowd and make sure you do not make a scene will excecuting your mission: and more importantly, escaping the crime scene. Assassin's Creed will MAKE this generation by enticing other developers to stop neglecting NPCs in their games, and make games more lively and realistic.

Honorable Mentions:

1. End War (360/PS3)

2. Mass Effect (360)

3. Little Big Planet (PS3)

4. Heavy Rain (PS3/360/PC)

========================================================

Games That Will Break This Generation

3. Halo 3 (360)

Yes, I said it. Halo 3 will BREAK this generation. Now, the gameplay is absolutely excellent. I am a huge fan of Halo, but I don't see it offering anything new to the genre as the games I mentioned (Bioshock, Army of Two, Assassin's Creed). The problem is that Halo is a big influence to many developers of the genre. If Halo does something, their game has to have it. When Halo 3 is selling millions, developers are going to avoid risking their game by making something revolutionary--instead, they are going to copy the best selling FPS. Now, I hope that I am wrong. I hope that Halo 3's single player will be revolutionary.

2. Devil May Cry 4 (PS3/360)

Am I mad about DMC4 going multi-platform? Yes. Am I bitter? Yes. I wish Capcom made Devil May Cry 4 for one platform--I don't care which one it is, I just wish it was made for one. Why? Because Devil May Cry 4 could have so much more. Capcom would have only had to focus on the PS3, and its capabilites--its strengths and its weaknesses. But now, they have to make it for two consoles disregarding each consoles strengths and capabilities. Various Hands-On reports and previews have said that Devil May Cry 4 is great thus far. Imagine how great is would be if it were only on the PS3...or 360? I have a bad feeling that this trend will continue in the long run.

1. Fabula Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy XIII (Multiplatform-mainly PS3)

This series hasn't even came out, and I am already sick of it. This proves that Square Enix is getting worse and worse each year. Why are they making so many Final Fantasy XIIIs? Why can't they just make one Final Fantasy XIII, and focus on their other great IPs? (Chrono Trigger being one of them). This is absolutely ridiculous. I love Final Fantasy, but this is pushing it. This will BREAK the generation for gamers wanting more than Final Fantasy. Square Enix stated that they are not finished announcing more FF13s--they want FNC to last for many years. Gamers wanting other great RPGs from Square Enix, will have to suffer because of Fabula Nova Crystallis.

=======================================================

Neutral Games

1. Super Mario Galaxy  (Wii)

It is so difficult to predict the fate of a Wii game. The Wii is a new device, with a new way of interaction. It would be difficult for me to predict how well or how poorly Super Mario Galaxy will do.

2. Metroid Prime 3 (Wii)

(See Above)

3. Lair (PS3)

Lair has the chance to, essentially, MAKE the PS3 or BREAK the PS3 in terms of controls. If Lair's control scheme (a la motion control), works effectively, then many PS3 games will begin to use it--if it is used in a poor manner, there won't be many games that incorporate motion control on the PS3. It's difficult, at this point, to predict Lair's fate.

I would put, Disaster Day of Crisis in neutral also; the idea sounds good, but little is known, and its a Wii game.

i was about to call your a mental fanboy, until i read what you said about Wii, where you are right. in that case every Wii game will be neutral because each one offers something never before seen, for better or worse. that is why Wii is the perfect console. most games will either be awesome or crap. and as an educated gamer i can sift through to those awesome titles. good job man, nice post.

Bioshock and Army Of Two = Nothing special. //In my opinion

No, I don't feel that way, just going by what he said at the end of his first post to keep it simple.

how does that make the wii the most awsome console?

the games could be 95% crap to 5% quality.

in fact, because its so up in the air, that makes the wii the WORST console. most games could suck. whereas, with the 360 and ps3, you can generally tell a quality title from miles away.

Developers have already been copying Halo for the entire last generation. That part's nothing new.

But in some ways, they should copy Halo more. I don't know why it's so difficult for other companies to recreate the matchmaking and party systems that Halo 2 introduced.

that is EXACTLY like the PS1 and PS2, and my guess is that it worked out for them...  and no. nowadays developers have found a way to flop the greatest looking games (Zelda, Lost Planet, Resistance, etc.)

I wish developers could make Halo's matchmaking system a standard. Gears of War is pathetic in comparison to it.

Well, by that logic the PS2 was the worst console, since its crap to great ratio was the biggest of the three consoles, even if it did have the most good games.

Anyone who dismisses the possibilities of the Wii as a gimmick has no vision whatsoever, or is just being a fanboy.

you said that just because a game uses the WiiMote doesnt mean it couldnt be done on other consoles. well it actually does. i bet WarioWare would suck on 360 or PS3. Trauma Center would be the most boring game ever on anything but Wii or DS. i really hope you see where im going. BTW, i would like to see a PS3 game so far that couldnt be done on 360 or PC...

dude just because FFXIII bears the name Final fantasy that doesn't mean it's going to be anything like teh ff's before it, ff12 shows how the series is changing, and the teaser trailer of XIIIkinda nodded to the change in gameplay. People who keep moronically saying that every ff is the same clearly havent played each and every ff.

you have no basis to state that this game will do nothing for rpg gaming.

in fact you have no basis for saying the same thing of halo 3, all we've really seen of the game is multiplayer.

bioshock artiscally looks very interesting, but in terms of it gameplay all i've really seen is weird weapons and kinda querky A.I, (big daddy and the creepy little girl), this is really cool dont get me wrong but who's to say the campaign mode of halo 3 won't be as complex and intricate obviously in a different sense, because of the war setting

imo mass effect's scope completely outshines bioshock. Its a bioware game man...

Metal gear solid 4  takes place in 3 different parts of the planet: middle east, Eastern europe somewhere, and south america

i thought metal gear solid 2 was epic, but this just seems bigger.

sorry dude the only thing i really agree with you is where you put asassin's creed.

-Sora

Thanks for telling me that, i might have to get a Ps3 now

I didn't even know it takes place in three different places. I just thought it takes place in the Middle East. :?

you said that just because a game uses the WiiMote doesnt mean it couldnt be done on other consoles. well it actually does. i bet WarioWare would suck on 360 or PS3. Trauma Center would be the most boring game ever on anything but Wii or DS. i really hope you see where im going. BTW, i would like to see a PS3 game so far that couldnt be done on 360 or PC...

You're right about Trauma centre and Warioware. but neither of those games are really industry changing.

as for the ps3, every game it has could be done on 360 /pc. your point?

well you said show you a game that couldnt be done on other consoles. any 360 or PS3 game could be done on a high end PC either now or in the near future too.

Well done, but Bioshock will certainly not make this generation. It's design is simply too 'soon to be a cult hit' to make any large impact on the industry. It will be a fantastic game, but casuals will simply reply with "Bio-what?".

Assassins creed will just be another game.

Bioshock will be a good fps......until you beat it and its over

Army of two will be a fun co op expeirience........until you beat it and its over.

thats my opinion.

halo 2 is still being played on xbox live ALOT. halo 3 will have more replayability than ever.

I know that it would be too "soon to be a Cult hit" but if people that play it get there friends to play it, then they get more friends to play it and so on, then it could be big also Irrational said that they're making the game so that when the game will end the story will be complete but still leave it open to a sequal also they said there is atleast 1 other ending.

I don't know what to think about the appeal of BioShock...the graphics alone will attract the mass public, but maybe the lack of MP will scare them away again. :? Too early to say, but I'll definitely enjoy it. :)

Sorry but I'm not seeing the fuss with Army of Two. I know about it, I've seen the whole co-op gimmick, but it doesn't really pull many strings. There have been other co-op games in the past that have done such a bang-up job, not to mention this is EA - they do jack crap in terms of doing things 'new' let alone 'revolutionary'.

There's many other titles you can replace Army of Two with. Metroid Prime 3 looks a lot more promising than 'neutral' too.

I prefer a good single player game over a good multiplayer game.  I'm not saying that I'm not a big multiplayer fan, it's just that I appreciate a good single player game over anything.

Halo 3 will be fun until everybody starts to mod and bungie encourages players to superbounce again.
