so if something is good, and you add an expansion pack to continue the story it should not be counted ? the why are halo 3 or kotor 2 counted ?

rexoverbey

Halo 3 is a full game based off a complete redo of engine, physics, lighting, material, game mechanics, features (Forge, Video saves, etc), and was reviewed as a COMPLETE new title, which also did not require the original game from 2002. If Halo 2 expansion came I would not count it as a full game and it would not be reviewed by gamespot as such either.

lots of game use same engine, so ? many expansions have more features than you listed, so ? halo 3 is not reviewed as a complete new title otherwsie the story wouldn't make much sense would it now ? requiring the orignal game, how does it makes another game less of a game, and how about expansion packs that are standalone ?

Halo 3 received the same review criteria that any new full IP would receive. If it is marketed as a stand alone expansion it is still an expansino not full game. The reviewer takes it as an expansion if it is marketed in that manor. Part of the reason it could get AAA is because it could be a cheap expansion, though it would of been rated much lower as a full game.

and? a cheap game with a lot of content will also get a higher score than it would as a full priced game.

Lets look at something like Burning Crusade. 7 new zones, over a thousand new quests, 2 new races, 10 new levels, almost 100 hours of brand new content (NOT counting doing things more then once). How the hell can that not count but something like Gears of War, a 8 hour game (a fantastic 8 hour game mind you) does? OFCOURSE expansions count.Cali3350

Blizzard spent alot less time, per hour of gameplay, than epic did.

You might as well count LIVE arcade games then.

you have no proof for that... Blizzard puts their soul into every game they release. That has been proven time and again... They worked on Burning Crusade for like 3 years.... starting RIGHT after they released WoW on the expansion... They had all 150 people at their studio working endless hours. Believe me, Blizzard isn't someone you want to try and question when it comes to how much they work on their games...

..... what? you forget the hours apon hours of testing drop rates, gameplay , net coding , enemy AI , the thousands of quests in outlands ... or thousand ( cant remember the number ) .... the fine tuning both Normal and Heroic instances, then the 4 weeks of each instance beta testing?

The Expansion took a year and a half, now add in all the work done on it since then aswell.

Dark Avatar is technically a "mere" expansion to Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords, but the added features are so profound that it feels like a new and even better game.Gamespot

Technically a mere expansion that right there shows it is NOT a full game. I don't care what it "feels" like, technically it is and should be coutned as an expansion only. With that itshould not count towards a AAA full game.

That's all I have to say.

[QUOTE="Pro_wrestler"]Expansions don't count. You can't play an expansion unless you have main game. I don't care if they ship with more content.horrowhip

ever heard of a STAND ALONE expansion? They don't require the main game. They still have just as much content as any full fledged game too..All the Galactic Civilization "expansions" are stand alone games. They count. Opposing Fronts and Forged alliance(both AA) also are stand-alone. Not counting Burning Crusade is perfectly proposterous because that has more content than all the games on the 360 COMBINED. Just wanted to point those things out.

99% of the time Gamespot PENALIZES games for being expansions. Not counting them is rediculous cause they actually score LOWER than what they would score as a seperate game... Like Opposing Fronts.... Thats a solid AAA game that was held back because of it being an expansion. Medieval II Total War Kingdoms was the same way... Forged Alliance. Many games are held back in score simply for being an expansion. Them scoring AAA is something that is EXTREMELY difficult to do.... If you don't count Expansions you are just a fanboy who wants to see his system look better by System Wars rules because expansions are essentially full games, no different from sequels.

Except you're wrong. Its a full fledged game with more content than the vast majority of other games, has improved graphics, more content, new gameplay mechanics, and new ingame assets. It IS a game.

So you want to compare arcade games .. these .... 1-2 hour games that have nothing new whatsoever really ........ to expansions that can double the story/features/gameplay/gametime?

Sorry, sounds like another biased lemming trying to get one up , its almost as bad as "The PC isnt a gaming system" ...

So it being unable to be bought seperately is criteria that enables it to be counted as a full game? Shivering Isles has to be bought seperately and is only $30 from XBL. You might aswell count the horse armour aswell, seems fair to me.

I guess the 360 gets 2 GTA4 games since it has exclusive DL'able content.

... that.... Seriously.... Some of those expansions were among the best selling games in a long time. I know for a fact Burning Crusade was. Galactic Civilizations has always been a niche game. Opposing Fronts sold really well. The general public does play and enjoy these games. I seriously suggest giving Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts a serious try. Its an amazing game. I bet you would enjoy it even... Stop being a fanboy and enjoy games.... I do. Played an enjoyed Halo 3... Not the greatest game ever and not a 9.5 in my books but it was good. Gears was lots of fun a while back even if it was one of the worst balanced games I have ever played. Forza is a good racing game. PDZ was pretty fun and gets too much flack IMO... Get off your fanboy pedestal and actually enjoy games for what they are... Seriously...

They even say in thier damn reviews these things, about Gears being ebtter in everyway and still graphicalyl amazing ... ye it got 9.0 ( which imo should of been the freaking 360 rating anyway ... overhyped on graphics ).

Ah so because the review is "short" it doesnt count?

Hes wrong anyway, they are under the same categories as all PC games, in thier normal genres.

Yet hermits belive PC games get rated under a different criteria than consoles a sput that all the time. Believe what you want to believe.

Then why more people vote that expansion count on the poll?

You know that not always the 360 will win in everything, you have to accept that. Maybe in a future the 360 will get more AAA games but that time will tell.

i really laugh at the lengths lemmings go to proove they have the most superior library - pc and 360 are brothers, console exclusive, pc is not a console and now expansion packs don't count. yet they fail every time

PC game scored10> Console game scored 10.

Also as Console game scored 10> handheld game scored 10

10means best of what platform can offer, and it is logical that PC can offer more than Handheld device or Console.

What a terrible thread, as if PC titles shouldn't be counted before the 360's release. There are so many classics on PC still worth playing, it negates any kind of list, period.

Oh and you forgot F.E.A.R for PC(9.1), which came out a month before the 360 came out, but in the same season. That counts as well as it's still a better game on PC that needs to be given credit.

Don't forget about Civilization 4(9.4) as well, which came out literally 3 weeks before the 360 launch, that deserves credit as well, it's the same holiday season. Why would you discount these games because of MS's scedule????

[QUOTE="Pro_wrestler"]Expansions don't count. You can't play an expansion unless you have main game. I don't care if they ship with more content.Pro_wrestler

ever heard of a STAND ALONE expansion? They don't require the main game. They still have just as much content as any full fledged game too..All the Galactic Civilization "expansions" are stand alone games. They count. Opposing Fronts and Forged alliance(both AA) also are stand-alone. Not counting Burning Crusade is perfectly proposterous because that has more content than all the games on the 360 COMBINED. Just wanted to point those things out.

Bro..If I cared, I would be a hermit. Stop acting as if anyone but PC fans can play these games.

Wow, your logic is astounding. Why talk about any 360 game when only 360 Fans can play those games...and so and so on.

Of course PC fans enjoy these games, they're PC Fans!!!

I feel sorry for people who only care about AAA games. You're going to miss out on alot of quality AA games if you ignore those.

Underrated games likeSTALKER for example. PC has the most AA games by FAR! PC wins even without all the AAA counting.

How far back are you going into PCs past? I mean, if you took it's entire exsistence into consideration NO console touches it's number of AAAs!Nova_Mongoose

Then if we are going to count the past lets take the PS3 and count all the PS2 and PS1 AA and AAA titles :)

Apprarently not since a Console has beat the pc 4 out of the past 5 years in the overall GOTY categories.

Funny to see people flack to defend the PC and expansion packs. I'm not disputing it's the best gaming platform overall, just amused by the response some people have whenever is is compared to other systems.

On topic: Some expansion packs contain more than the originalgame, others do not add enough and might as well be patches. However, there needs to be a standard for counting scores and I agree that expansion packs should count as full game. The Burning Crusade is a sticky situation because its more content for an MMORPG, which receives new content patches every few months (Zul'Aman this week). So by the time the expansion comes out, the "original" game is not original anymore. Just pointing that out.

Ummm,accordingtotheGalacticCivilization2website;

"Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar

Requires: Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, or Vista

Also Requires: Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords (don't have GalCiv II? Get it here)"

Personally, I'm in the camp that thinksthat if you can not just buy the disk and play it by itself, it should not be counted. (ie: Gal. Civ. II : DArequires GC II : DL so should not count.)This seems like needless padding of the numbers. Should we count these again when they are combined in a single package as well?

My my my, where to begin?

Firstly, congratulations on making the most blatantly biased name for a poll ever.

Secondly, people don't want expansions to count because the PC has them, and the PC is currently kicking your asses in AAA/AA titles. Twenty bucks says if consoles got expansion packs regularly, this discussion would not exist.

Thirdly, not all expansions need the original game, and many expansions have more content than some "full" console games.

Fourthly, this is a lot like saying PCs shouldn't be in system wars at all, because it has the advantage of expansion packs, or STEAM, or internet, or word processing, and so on. Its an advantage that we have, deal with it.

They're listed on this site with full games, they're reviewed like full games, and they're sold on the shelf next to full games. The only reason people want them to not be counted is so that the PC won't be winning as bad. Sad, really.

1. It's obviouslyquite clear and if you didn't like it you shouldn't vote or comment on it.

2. If you consider one extra game kicking ass I feel sorry for PC gamers. Well Assasins Creed and Mass Effect shouldlevelthat out even more.Heck if I had 1000s of no name 3rd party game developers I think I could pump out a few more AAAs. Plus what uber AAA title on the PC right now? BTW expansions have been regular on consoles since last gen try to keep up with the times (GRAW, Halo, Oblivion).

3. Content seems to be the word of the day in this thread. Yet alot of those expansions are nothing more than an added couple levels or maps. You act like every expansion is 200 hours of added gameplay and no need to buy further iterations. I don't care if you make a one level game 100 it is still adding to the original game. It's like buying a 1 page book and adding the rest of the pages later. It is still the same book and not counted as many.

4. Enjoy all your "advantages" such as word processing. Also enjoy patches, turning off processes, blue screens, windows updates, freezing, viruses/trojans/spybots/worms/etc, file coruption, conflicts, OS hogs, compatiablity issues, upgrading, memory leaks, ............

Lastly they are marketed as expansions, they are reviewed as expansions, they are developed as expansions, and they are on shelves next to expansions. The only reason people want to count them is because they don't want conoles to be winning as bad. Sad, really.

..... HL2 won SOTY over Halo 2 which scored higher, now by your logic if standards were the same Halo 2 would of won , but thats not the case.

They even say in thier damn reviews these things, about Gears being ebtter in everyway and still graphicalyl amazing ... ye it got 9.0 ( which imo should of been the freaking 360 rating anyway ... overhyped on graphics ).

Meu2k7

They always have a seperate category for PC and Console GOTY so HL2 did not win over Halo 2. Metroid Prime scored 9.7 and Halo2 scored 9.4. That is why MP won GOTY that year it had nothing to do with HL2. Get your facts straight.... BTW Halo 2 had more awards from the majority of gamesites than HL2 (including developers choice award). Stings doesn't it?

Second Gears came out a year later on PC that is why it scored 9.0. Not because of it's uber standards. Also the controls for keyboard suck on PC and they recommend using a 360 controller. Don't believe me go look at reviews at almost every review site. Here is a good quote from bit-tech's review..."It doesn't have the shocking "OMG! JAWESOME!" effect that the original had when it launched". PC gamers hated that too because nothing was remotely as good last year when gears launched. BTW it deserved the 9.6 deal with it.

You know, you really should've done exclusive AAAs. Who cares about AAAs in an argument if they are on multiple platforms? Do the same thing with exclusives. PC wins (which is funny, because even if you use ALL AAAs PC still wins).
