ok. i have no bias here. IMHO, both consoles equally suck and are severely overhyped compared to a mid / hig end pc.BUT,  thats not the point here, they do have cool games, and so they constitute a  valid  option  for  YOUR  gaming  needs.

360 has a more efficient / dev friendly architecture. unified shaders and ram, good gpu, mediocre cpu...
BUT, they dropped the ball here :  thermal design and cooling solution ( they whent cheap )

ps3 has a broken hardware design. Sony and  IBM engineers created a frankenstein here, it has power, but it's not efficient nor dev friendly in any way  BUT  Sony didnt follow  M$ cheap / criminal / shameless   "cooling solution" ideas ,  so  the overall build quality and thermal design  of the ps3 is EXCELLENT

LETS TAKE A LOOK...

PS3 HAS  ROBUST ACTIVE COOLING

Heat pipes

Fan (16cm)

360 HAS PUNY  PASSIVE COOLING

PASSIVE GPU  COOLING ^                                                                        PASSIVE CPU  COOLING  ^

THOSE  TINY COOLERS  IN THE BACK ARE SYSTEM COOLERS,   ERGO  THE DAMAGE ON THE GPU / CPU IS ALREADY ONE , ALL THEY DO  IS TRY 2  ATTENUATE THE HEAT PROBLEM

TO MAKE MATTERS EVEN WORST THE GPU HEATSINK  IS LOCATED DIRECTLY ABOVE THE DVD DRIVE EFFECTIVELY BLOCKING  CIRCULATION OF THE HOT AIR TO THE OUTSIDE.

BUILD QUALITY

360   USE OF COILS + CHEAP ARSE CAPACITORS

VERSUS  NO COILS + expensive  Conductive Polymer Aluminum Solid Capacitors in the ps3

360 does have about 10 times the user base...

Oh and I'm not saying 360 hardware is good, just that how many PS3s are out there right now?

sorry but this are all FACTS this  thing

has a HIGH  level of  craftsmanship (and cost , $100 at least, maybe even more)
i mean, abundant and  large copper heat pipes, huge fan, a ton of aluminium fins = HUGE DISSIPATION AREA

vrs

this...

I agree with you. Not to mention, the PS3 is still pretty new. problems can crop up at a later time. But among those PS3s are out, there are a much smaller # of complaints. With the Xbox360, I remember people complaining right after launch about build quality issues. No such problems with the PS3. I'm not saying the PS3 is a better console. It's just better in terms of build quality and reliability. (And again, I'm sure MS is making the necessary adjustments to remedy this problem)

Firstly, there is nothing "mediocre" (as far as console CPU's go) about Xenon. Secondly while I do agree that PS3 is better built, and the cooling is better(heatpipes for the win!)...there is nothing passive about the CPU on the Xenon...thats a watercooled block.

What boggles me though is why they didn't do it for the GPU as well... or at least kept the large heatsink and attached some sort of fan on top.

there system works well, and other then GPU overheating...the rest of the hardware is just fine.

Sony did do a good job at making a console that was quiet, and didn't have much hardware problems, especially as significant as the 360, which is where Microsoft really dropped the bomb.

xbox360 has two 60 milimeter exhaust fans that pull cool air across heatsink fins and out the back of console.

ps3 has crappier build quality, outdated crap gpu, and crap cpu for gaming, cell cant access xdr+ gddr3...only rsx can use gddr3 +xdr, ..plus the ps3's fan sucks, also the ps3 gpu rsx has 256 mb gddr3 located on the gpu pcb heating up gpu.

I think it's funny you commented on the heat pipes on the PS3 and failed to see that the 360 also used heatpipes on it's cpu cooler (plus copper bottom). Also the 360 has exhaust fans that you did not point out. Even some of the most expensive Mobo's out there still use electrolytic capacitors BTW. Some of that cooling is also based on having the PS built into the system also which 360 is external and not needed. One last note 360 is shrinking it's die and the extra heating won't be needed anyway.

Notice the "exhaust fans" and heatpipe across CPU, not mentioned by the TC.

Plus the 360 uses a duct to channel cool the hot air out.  Two 60MM fans, two heatsinks one w/ copper base and heatpipes, plus air duct is not enough?  LOL!  Plus as I had said before half of PS3 cooling is going to PSU components and 360s are external.

YES. GET IT 2 YOUR BRAIN.  ITS NOT ENOUGH

THE COOLING STINKS. ( MAINLY THE GPU COOLING)

IN THE " PC WORLD " THERE IS NOT A SINGLE HIG END  / LOW END PASSIVE VIDEOCARD  THAT RUNS COOL

THEY  USE  MASSIVE  ALUMINIUM HEATSINKS PLUS TON OF HEAT PIPES  LIKE THESE  AND REQUIERE REALLY GOOD AIRFLOW

ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF REALLY HOT PASSIVE  GPU

LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THAT THING. YET IT RUNS HOT. IN A PC CASE. WITH LOTS OF SPACE / AIRFLOW AND FANS.

OK, I WILL TRY 2 EXPLAIN THIS BETTER

PS3 COOLING IS SIMILAR TO THIS ( IN CONCEPT)

DHES (Direct Heat Exhaust System)

The DHES draws cool air from inside the case and exhausts warm
air outwards. This prevents the fan from recycling warm air to cool the
GPU, which increases cooling performance.

Further the DHES lowers the air temperature inside the case, because the heat
of the GPU will be carried out directly.

MORE INFO HERE

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_Cooling

DHES (Direct Heat Exhaust System) technology, they significantly reduce core temperatures as well as computer case ambient temperatures. The DHES works by drawing cool air from within the computer case, passing it through a high efficiency heatsink over the core chip, and then directly disposing of the heated air out the rear of the case, thus preventing circulation of hot air within the case.

NOTEBOOK COOLERS USE  SIMILAR SYSTEMS.

360 COOLING IST NOT ENOUGTH.  THE GPU ITS ALWASYS ON THE LIMIT,  AND THE SYSTEM FANS IN THE BACK  TRY TO EJECT THE HOT AIR OUT OF THE CASE. THATS IT.

THEY ARE NOT "THROWING COOL AIR TO THE GPU"

THEY ARE ONLY EXAUSTING HOT AIR OUT,  THE LONGER YOU USE YOUR CONSOLE. THE HOTTER IT GETS THATS A FACT.

360 "COOLING" ITS LIKE THIS

BUT IN A CONFINED SPACE. ( NOTE  XENOS DSNT HAVE HEATPIPES)

My 360 has never overheated... Why would they have put a better cooling system in there? Perhaps the PS3 needs a cooling system like that due to its massive power consumption?

Exactly he is showing $50-100 aftermarket heatsinks and comparing it to a $300 console heatsink. For one the PS3 heatsink doesn't compare to any of those shown either. Not to mention the fan is on the bottom of the unit! WTF? Second the 360 GPU is clock throttled which you are not going to find in a PC GPU. Plus he fails to realise that the 360 gpu only uses a mere35 watts and that includes the eDram! Find any recent PC GPU which does that.... Guess what!?!

The PS3 uses a high wattage GPU based off a PC GPU.   I don't know the exact number for RSX but the Cell and RSX use 385 watts!

[QUOTE="Marka1700"]TC sounds like one of them people who would spend $1000 in a PC on performance parts, CPU, Ram, Graphics Card Ect, and spend $1500 on cooling gear.rexoverbey
Exactly he is showing $50-100 aftermarket heatsinks and comparing it to a $300 console heatsink. For one the PS3 heatsink doesn't compare to any of those shown either. Not to mention the fan is on the bottom of the unit! WTF? Second the 360 GPU is clcoked throttled which you are not going to find in a PC GPU. Plus he fails to realise that the 360 gpu only uses a mere 35 watts and that includes the eDram! Find any recent PC GPU which does that.... Guess what!?! The PS3 uses a high wattage GPU based off a PC GPU. I don't know the exact number for RSX but the Cell and RSX use 385 watts!

low consumption on IDLE. try LOAD.

That is under load try again. The whole system is only at 200 watts.

That does worry me. It's understandable for a laughably underpowered system like the Wii to have a mostly-passive cooling system, but I'd expect something a little more agressive for a powerhouse like the 360. They should consider gaming laptop-style cooling for the 360 revision.

All high end GPUs are high wattage I already explained that to you. There is a reason why all new high end GPU's require high wattage power supplies, 1-2 power supply connectors on top of the power coming from the AGP/PCI slot. I already explained to you that the 360 Xenos is the most effecient GPU availble w/ it's unified shaders and only needs 35 watts of power. If you can't understand that then that is your problem.

HIGH WATTAGE = HIGH HEAT

LOW WATTAGE = LOW HEAT

^^^ It's  pretty elementary understanding.
