"Now that NPD has released September 2007 figures, it strikes me as quite interesting that so many people were taken aback by the Xbox 360's jump to first place in hardware sales. In fact, if you remember an article I wrote back in September, it would have told you everything you needed to know about hardware sales for September.

But instead, there are a host of journalists and pundits making such a big deal out of the Xbox 360's rise, as if it wasn't expected. As I've said here hundreds of times before: videogames sell consoles, not the other way around.

So, with that in mind, I thought it would be nice to take a look at what is coming soon to a console near you and discuss what I think will happen by the time January rolls around. And while I still believe the Wii is a fad and Sony has some work to do, my conclusions may surprise you.

Microsoft Xbox 360

(Credit: CNET)

Generally speaking, it's Microsoft that has the most to worry about this holiday season. I believe the Xbox 360 will take the day when this whole console battle is over, but all in all, it looks like the next few months will be tough.

A quick glimpse at the Gamespot release calendarwill tell you everything you need to know for this holiday season. In a word, the games lineup is mediocre -- at best. Sure, games like Call of Duty 4, Assassin's Creed, and Mass Effect will be hitting shelves, but only the latter will be exclusive to the Xbox 360. And to be quite honest, it's the exclusive titles that will shape this holiday season.

Microsoft has already done what it had to do -- get Halo 3 out the door and enjoy unprecedented hardware and software revenue. In fact, the release of Halo 3 solidified the company as a major player in this business for years to come. But the main problem with its strategy of releasing the game so early is the lack of true hardware-sellers. Sure, Mass Effect looks neat, but is it on par with a game like Halo, which is the main reason the majority of people bought an Xbox 360 in September? I doubt it.

Overall Xbox 360 outlook for the holiday season: mediocre.

Nintendo Wii

(Credit: CNET)

I expect the Wii to have a huge holiday season once again. With Super Mario Galaxy around the corner, some are touting it as the biggest jump in the franchise since Super Mario 64.

All in all, I think it's safe to say that first-party franchises have always dominated Nintendo consoles, and the Wii is no different. And regardless of what you think about this, it works for Nintendo.

With an expected November 12th release date, Super Mario Galaxy couldn't come at a better time for Nintendo. Not only will it make every Nintendo fan jump for joy, it'll force parents to make a decision -- should I buy it for my kids now or use it as a gift for the holidays? I guarantee the majority of people will choose the latter.

Historically speaking, Mario games have always helped sell Nintendo consoles. And with the Wii hype dying down, Super Mario Galaxy is exactly what the company needs to stimulate sales and add some fuel to the dwindling fire of hype.

Overall Nintendo Wii outlook for the holiday season: strong

Sony Playstation 3

(Credit: CNET)

With Sony's decision to drop the price of the Playstation 3 to a far more affordable level, I believe the company will enjoy a significant surge in sales this holiday season. And while I have some issues with the upcoming catalog of games (it's a bit weak), it's strong enough to justify people spending their cash on the device.

As I mentioned above, the Wii will have a strong holiday season. Along those lines, the Wii will probably be sold out for much of the season and people will be standing in line once again. And for all of those who weren't able to pick up a Wii, the Playstation 3 will be the next logical choice.

Think about it: you're standing in line for a Wii and you're told it's sold out. Knowing all too well that your kids want a new video game console, the affordable Playstation 3 is sitting there for the taking. So, in a rush to get holiday shopping over with, you ask for the Sony console.

Now, will all Sony sales end up this way? Not a chance. In fact, you can probably expect a significant growth in sales from the price drop alone. But it certainly won't hurt that the Wii will be sold out again and the PS3 will not, will it?

Sony made the right move because, well, it had to at this point. Expect to see Sony surging in the numbers.

Overall Sony Playstation 3 outlook: moderate to strong "

What?..

The affordable PS3?..Um, the 360 is more affordable and has Halo 3. They're mentioning "kids"..yeah

I'm pretty sure little Johnny is gonna hear all his friends talking about halo 3 and he's gonna want one too.

I find it hilarious how since Sony had a price drop, they make it sound like its some extremely cheap console. There is still a $350 Xbox 360, which is cheaper than the cheapest PS3 at $380 (the 20GB at GameStop)

How much do these people get paid? I'm pretty sure I could make **** up just as well. He's saying that these will be the hardest months for the 360, but it will come out on top. If anything, I think 360's hardest months will be when the ps3 releases its heavy hitters next year. The 360 pretty much has this holiday over the ps3 just because this is the Halo holiday.

Not to mention this:

"Think about it: you're standing in line for a Wii and you're told it's sold out. Knowing all too well that your kids want a new video game console, the affordable Playstation 3 is sitting there for the taking. So, in a rush to get holiday shopping over with, you ask for the Sony console."

is just the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Guess what buddy, theres a $279 and a $350 gaming machine too, that have Halo 3...

The Core model is a waste of time. The premium model is the only one worth a damn. It costs $350 after the first price drop. It does not include an HD movie player, it runs games on DVD-9, it comes with a 20 gig hard drive, has very limited backwards compatibility, no wi-fi, and no internet gaming. In order to facilitate HD movie playing, you need to spend an additional $180. In order to facilitate internet gaming, you need to spend $150 for a wireless network adapter and 12 month gaming card (are you planning on playing online for more than 12 months? Let's say, 3 years? Add another $150).

The Playstation 3 is definitely affordable at $400. 40 gigabyte hard drive, wi-fi, no backwards compat, USB, free online gaming, and an HD movie player and Blu Ray gaming drive. This console will facilitate gaming in every way, 100% of the time. If you already own a PS2, which I assume you do, you've got a done deal in a big way.

Playstation97

that's to be expected. the price drop + Uncharted, R&C, Haze and UT3 timed exclusive.

it's probably going to sell better than the 360 this november and december.

I like how they said it...

360 = Mass Effect = Mediocre.

Wii = Super Mario Galaxy = Strong

PS3 = no Wii's on shelf = Moderate to strong

it makes some sense... but there are many other factors in what makes a good holiday season.

rofl i love how he says its about the videogames but doesnt mention a single game for ps3 holiday lineup

and the affordable ps3 when ppl cant find the wii, rofl what is this guy smoking

just because something drops in price doesnt make it affordable

if a ferrari drops from 1 mil to 750k does it mean its affordable? i thought so

Somehow he figures the PS3's now $399 price tag is justified by average games whereas the 360's $279 price tag with 2x the amount of great games will equate to mediocracy for the Xbox camp?

"videogames sell consoles, not the other way around." -This guy

Then he says:

"Its the exclusives that will shape the holiday season"

BioShock, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Forza 2, Ace Combat, Katamari, PGR4, F.E.A.R PM and all of the other multiplats that will be bought and played most on 360: COD4, Assassins Creed, K&LDM, The OB, NFS et cetera.

Why would I buy a PS3 for AC and COD4 when I can play it for hundreds less. Didn't Madden 2008 and Skate teach these people anything.

ANALyst these days cannot be taken for word of mouth because it seems like their trying to seperate themselves from a consensus and its just not reasonable.

We are talking about parents who are trying to buy a Wii for their kids and find them sold out. They'll gravitate to the next cheapest thing. They might be able to be talked into a premium 360 over a core, but they are not going to know all of this information.

All of those things you list that cost extra for the 360, absolutely none of them are necessary. You can play 360 games for $280, and you can play ps3 games for $400. That's what parents will see.

Oh, and you don't need a wireless network adapter for internet gaming... Don't use something that the vast majority of 360 owners don't have just to make it look expensive.

Exactly. They remembered that and once they saw that giant wall-o-games that the PS2 had, it made their choice that much easier. Things are the opposite now and once they see the amazing line-up that is the 360's library, their decision will be that much easier. Its common sense, casuals =/= loyal.

I'm no lemming, but damn, that guy runs under the assumption that you CAN'T buy games that are ALREADY on shelves. I hardly doubt every person who wants Halo 3 already has it, or Bioshock, or Gears of War for that matter. "Video Games sell consoles," he says. Great way to contradict yourself.

Sometimes the holidays becomes the perfect excuse to reward yourself (or your kids) with a video-gaming treat. Heck, I'd rather have a 8800 Ultra, but I think the 360 definitely has the strongest console line up out there. And Christmas is definitely gonna reward all the patient and eager twelve year olds who are to young to "save up" and "get a job".

I call B.S on the article.

I was going to make this point but trup summed it up quite nicely :)

Most parents don't know the technical aspects of consoles, they just get what is cheaper and is all the "rave" usually for their kids.

Think about it: you're standing in line for a Wii and you're told it's sold out. Knowing all too well that your kids want a new video game console, the affordable Playstation 3 is sitting there for the taking. So, in a rush to get holiday shopping over with, you ask for the Sony console.jessie5788

There is still a $350 Xbox 360, which is cheaper than the cheapest PS3 at $380 (the 20GB at GameStop)

hes talking about what you get in the ps3 for 400. look yes the 360 has halo and is 50 cheaper but for 50 more you can get a blu-ray. This strategy will win over a lot of people.

It would, if people actually cared about blu-ray.

what makes you think people don't care about blu-ray.

Dismal sales, despite 5 million ps3s being sold. Yes I know hd-dvd is doing even worse, but that doesnt mean blu-ray is selling.

Let's say, 3 years? it the ps name that will drive parents. even grandmothers know of the playstation name. now some may of heard of the 360 but it's probably because they heard it s a pos. The brand name on a product will sell anything if it's a strong name.

I can't imaginethat any significant number of parentswould jump from a $250 console to a $400 console just because they couldn't find the cheaper one, especially if their kid asked for it specifically. If the PS3 experiences a surge in sales this holiday season, it's because parents whose kids want a PS3 might finally decide they can afford one. The whole No Wii = PS3 rationale is sketchy at best.

I like how they said it...

360 = Mass Effect = Moderate

Wii = Super Mario Galaxy = Strong

PS3 = no Wii's on shelf = Moderate to strong

it makes some sense... but there are many other factors in what makes a good holiday season.

kansasdude2009

ace combat 6

left 4 dead

splinter cell conviction

mass effect

fear files

naruto 360

those look like pretty solid titles coming out this year for the 360

The PS3 does not have a single console selling game while the 360 has like 5, and still analysts think it's going to win. What exactly are you supposed to play on the ps3 apart from movies?

please give me links on sales. if your talking about stand alone blu-ray players then that not a an accurate source. you have to include the ps3 its a blu-ray player. I don't get how people don't include the ps3 in blu-ray sells.

You guys are really caring on about PREDICTIONS made by CNET. Come on guys ..... what have we (suppose to be hrdcore Gamers) come to.

If CNET reported the facts/NEWS is one thing, but a prediction in the gaming market.

another note .... Believe it or not, some people don't think BluRay has made a significant mark in the movie market. Tranformers being on HD DVD (not BR) helped me with my decision, along with the HD DVD addon working on my PC or laptop as well as my 360.

Im talking actual Blu-Ray movies. hard to find much abour recent figures as it seems neither Blu-Ray nor HD-DVD camps are saying anything about sales.

HD-DVD may actually become mainstream. Right now most people dont even understand what blu-ray or hd-dvd is.

one movie made your decision. i mean you can do what you want but it weird to me how you think hd-dvd is going to win just because of transformers. I mean pirates come out on blu-ray that was a hit in the movies and spiderman coming out on blu-ray also another hit . And they were both bigger movies then transformers.

 Were do I start..

1. Keep your technology rant. Casuals are not tech savvy. Casuals cant tell the different between games printed on DVD9 and Blu-ray. Hell, we can't even tell the difference so that eliminates the thought of "Casuals not buying 360 games because their on DVD9 as apposed to BD"

2. If all your saying is true then explain to me why people spend $1500 on pre-built PCs each year apposed to building one with greater performence for $800 less? Casuals are casual because they never buy technology as soon as its availible so what exactly do you think they've been playing for the past 2 years? Their PS2, Xbox and Gamecubes. It doesn't make sense for backwards compatibility to dictate their holiday purchase when they've been playing those 'backwards compatibility' games all along.

3. WTF are you talking about "No internet gaming?" Then WTF is Xbox Live?

4. In your first paragraph your criticize the 360 for its lack luster backwards compatibility yet in your second paragraph your listing PS3 40Gig's lack of backwards compatibility as a pro to buying it?

5. Your post is the biggest case of contravene I have ever read:(

weird why isn't my name on my post, but any way. its not fanboyism. brand names are a lot stronger then you think. Why do you think analyst aren't declaring the 360 the winner or have ever called the 360 the winner. why isn't the 360 selling world wide yea it had a spark in sells but not much to get everyone to change their views. Do you think ms could selll a system for 600 and make it to 5 million. I think not. You should go to best buy and circuit city and ask mothers which system they know of. You can think brand names aren't going to help all you want but you'll soon realize that having a good name like playstation will help in the long run

Pirates of the C.... and Spidy part what ever can be enjoyed on DVD as much as BR(IMO), but Transformers have people standing there in 'aw' ... (did for me ..)

More delusional replies, just because it has the name playstation does not mean it will instantly win. honestly, my mom probably doesn't remember playstation or xbox, so in theory, she would probably buy the cheapest one if no one had told her anything about the consoles.

Also, if I had a say in it, I would tell her to get the xbox because I like it more. :P

Edit: Oh, and also, are you saying that Sony is a bigger brand name then Microsoft? Think about this for a minute.

I believe it was its second best month ever. But regardless, it is incredible at how it's selling so much in months where no huge games come out.

Sorry, just being nitpicky for some reason.

If the Wii is sold out parents are going to buy the Xbox 360 Arcade or Core over the PS3... GundamGuy0

I agree. This is how i'd rank them.

360: Moderate/strong

Ps3: Moderate

Wii: Strong

Guess what buddy, theres a $279 and a $350 gaming machine too, that have Halo 3...

trup522

I agree.

Thats one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.

People understimate the multiplatforms, which are going to be a BIG part this holiday. If a person who doesnt have neither console desides to buy one, guess which one he is going to get. The cheapest one and the one with the most games.
