I was watching my cousin play CoD4 yesterday and I was thinking that there should be no lag, yet when he pulled up the opponents list, the connections weren't all perfect like they should've been considering that most people here nag about how the 360's online play is far superior to both PS3 and Wii. He sometimes had to shoot a little ahead of the opponent due to lag just like the Wii version of CoD WaW, and sometimes he had a perfect connection just like the Wii version of CoD WaW.

Also, we were playing Left 4 Dead (Great game btw), and halfway into the second match, the match dropped due to connection failure and he stated that it happens quite often which is also weird because people here claim that it is just sooo perfect.

Now Halo 3 worked fine with no lag or anything but so does Mario Kart Wii and Battallion Wars 2.

As much as people here try to down the Wii for the same stuff, I noticed no difference in the actualonline play. Now seeing who's online playing what is nice but you can do that in EA online games on the Wii as well, that's just an user interface, a nice one but that can be added with an update.

Now I'm not an expert on 360's online or anything, I'm just stating what Iexperienced yesterday.

Now can anybody tell me honestly, why is the 360's online play considered so much better than the others?

Because we don't have to punch in 15 digit code whenever we want to invite play with someone specific?

I haven't experienced any lag with a 5mb connection. Maybe you were on a slow connection? As for L4D that would be valves fault (or again your slow connection) as that game has dedicated servers.

How is he wrong? It's a fact that you have to put in your Wii friend code and a friend code for most games (individually) on the Wii whereas for the 360 you just add the Gamertag.

As an avoid COD4 online player. . .I can tell you no, this is completely wrong. The "shooting ahead" has nothing to do with lag but has to do with how the bullets fire and is only needed when you have a person running across your Line of Sight. Also, Connection rates are different not due to XBL but due to people's own connections. How can XBL control how well someone connections to them? The truth is, lag is very rare is COD4 and usually only occurs when the host drops out the game.

Well, you could say that about any online service. I've experienced lag in my limited journey through PC gaming, and on both my friends PS3 quite often, and very very rarely on my xbox. And most of the lag was in BF BC, which has dedicated servers.

@Jandurin: Maybe TC should have a more specific title then..he's generalizing a lot with the current title. Also, I don't think any 360 game has the kind of lag that Super Smash Bros. Brawl has.

To everybody that didn't understand the thread topic, it is stated toward ONLINE PLAY, NOT DLC(Which the Wii is about to fully support soon). I am referring to how the actualexperience is online when you're playinga game online.

Friend Codes is true but some games on the Wii do not require friend codes to add people (MOH H2 for example).

And the shooting in front of people on CoD4 is due to lag mainly because if everybody was given perfect connections, then the bullets would hit as soon as you pulled the trigger.

And saying my connection is slow couldn't be further from the truth. I'm running Wireless N through 6mb connection.

From my experience yesterday with 360's online play, there is basically no difference in it compared to the other systems. They all lag depending on what game it is, they all have games that work perfectly online, they all have dropped connections every now and then.

Hurmmm.

Do you understand the concept of other peoples own internet connections - be is speed, ISP and location being a factor for each individual game?

360 games for most of the part - those listed - have perfectly fine netcode.

All I got out of the 1st paragraph was.....

Sometimes a Ferrari drives at 30mph, and sometimes a Pontiac Sunfire drives at 30mph, therefore they are exactly the same.

Ah, but you do have to punch in 15 character alphabet gamertags sometimes though. Do you not? And that only takes maybe 1 minute tops, what's the big deal about that? You can't spare one minute? Obviously you can if you ccan punch in a gamertag that takes the exact same amount of time. Yes, you only have to put in gamertags once but what if someone has the name that you want? Friend Codes allow you to always be able to use the name you want no matter if someone else has it because they don't have your exact unique friend code.

Words/names are easier to remember and type in than pure numbers. How would you tell anybody apart if we were all named using numbers?

And the 360 has every online game working at top notch correct? I agree that Brawl's online (as was DBZ BT3 - Worst experince online on Wii ever)was bad but are there not any 360 games that have bad online experiences? You're making it seem like Brawl's online determined the Entire Definitionof Wii's online play. Yes the Wii has some bad online games, but so do the 360 and PS3 and PC for that matter.

nini200

Your issue comes from several different things. Any game played online will have lag, period end of discussion. Infromation must travel from system to system and this creates lag. Now a way around this is to have dedicated servers so "everyone experiences the same lag". Most 360 games do not have dedicated servers. This can be good or bad depending on your view of things. The bad is that if the "host" of the game has a bad connection then you will experience potential game breaking lag. The good is that no matter how long a game has been out my friends and I can play the game if we both have internet and copies of the game since thier is no server to maintain.

This all being said I would suspect that your friend has a poor internet connection or has not addressed his potential router connection issues. L4D has dedicated servers so any lag he is experiencing is self imposed. COD4 on the other hand does not so he could have either had a poor connection with someone or another issue may have been present.

Now to address your topic. The 360's online play is not exactly like th Wii's. Live's gold experience is ahead of both Nintendo's and Sony's. This is because MS decided to dive into online gaming last generation and has had extra time to work out the issues of maintaining a system like this. Right now I think that their service is worth $40/year. When Sony/Nintendo catch up then I will have to make a choice if I want to continue to pay for a service that is available for free from another supplier (which Sony is getting better and better but is not their yet).

Sorry for the long post but it amazes me when people make uniformed/ignorant comments/posts about online gaming.

Aside from a very few list of games, the Wii's online is horrible, sure you have to pay the 360's, but it is much better.

That' never happens to me ever. The 10 friends I've seen play this game never have any lag. Tell your friend it's time to upgrade from Dial_Up to broadband. lol!! XBox Live is NOTHING like Wii's online. It's like 100x's better then what the Wii offers. Sorry, but this thread fails badly.

It's not about the presence or absence of lag...with P2P multiplayer it mostly depends on your connection, the host's connection, and how close you are to the host.

With XBL it's about having a guaranteed feature set. Every single multiplayer game on the 360 has the following:

-Voice chat
-Friends list
-A shared gamertag
-Invites
-Private party chat
-Block/Ignore specific players
-Reputation/abuse reporting system

No other platform offers that. On the PS3/Wii/PC you'll always have some games that support certain features, some games that support other features, and some that hardly support anything. It's really nice to have, and very hard to go without it after you're used to it.

I was under the impression that when you pay for Xbox Live Gold, you were paying for dedicated servers but from what you stated, you're not?

Nope, he has the same connection as I do, running a Wireless N through 6mb connection. Connection is not the issue.

Explain what is the difference with Xbox Live Gold and what makes it better than the other two, that's what I want to know. Everybody here has said Xbox Live is better but noone has stated what makes it better besides gamertags. Why is it better?

And the last comment, I don't mind the occasional long post so no need for apology. The rest was a little harsh though. I will admit, I am a little ignorant when it comes to every aspect of online gaming though.

That' never happens to me ever. The 10 friends I've seen play this game never have any lag. Tell your friend it's time to upgrade from Dial_Up to broadband. lol!! XBox Live is NOTHING like Wii's online. It's like 100x's better then what the Wii offers. Sorry, but this thread fails badly. blackace

Maybe if you would take as much time to read as you do trying to insult, you would've read that ithenor am I isnot using Dial up and we both have 6mb connections which dial up could not get.

[QUOTE="Jandurin"][QUOTE="Hiroshi_Ichirou"] Always finding a excuse for something even when your wrong, the topic creator made a good point, but all these comments make anything he said go right out the window.shoryuken_

his only point is that online play has lag.... that's true on every system anywhere

The topic also said that 360's online play is exactly like the Wii's, which is completely false due to friend codes, little to no DLC, no patches, etc etc.

DLC and patches are pathetic. I dont know how people think those are good things. The only thing that this does is make the developers lazy, knowing they can release a product that is not finished because they can patch it later and release an extra chapter for a couple of bucks, and not just that, but the developers then make a statement like yeah, we care about the gamers so that is why we are fixing this with the patch, and everybody buys it and thinks that the developer is awesome. when in reality there souldnt be a need for patches.

DLC is different, some of it is worthy but most of it is just a rip off.

Do you know why Nintendo doesnt support patches?? Cause they would never release a Zelda, Metroid, Mario or whatever without it being 100% polished.

Having say that, Xbox Live is much more complete that what Wii offers online, I dont use the Wii for online games, at least not yet.

In my 3 years with Live, I have never experienced the issues so many here do. I don't know why but my connections on all consoles are good. The only thing I dislike is the PS3 download speed, or lack there of.

No, Wii fails in the online department. Friend codes are a fail. The idea's there, but the implementation is poor. But not for all Wii games. Mario Kart Wii is a good example, or Battalion Wars 2. If they really badly wanted to stick to friend codes, they should have just used the Wii's own friend code instead of individual game friend codes.
