Your issue comes from several different things. Any game played online will have lag, period end of discussion. Infromation must travel from system to system and this creates lag. Now a way around this is to have dedicated servers so "everyone experiences the same lag". Most 360 games do not have dedicated servers. This can be good or bad depending on your view of things. The bad is that if the "host" of the game has a bad connection then you will experience potential game breaking lag. The good is that no matter how long a game has been out my friends and I can play the game if we both have internet and copies of the game since thier is no server to maintain.
This all being said I would suspect that your friend has a poor internet connection or has not addressed his potential router connection issues. L4D has dedicated servers so any lag he is experiencing is self imposed. COD4 on the other hand does not so he could have either had a poor connection with someone or another issue may have been present.
Now to address your topic. The 360's online play is not exactly like th Wii's. Live's gold experience is ahead of both Nintendo's and Sony's. This is because MS decided to dive into online gaming last generation and has had extra time to work out the issues of maintaining a system like this. Right now I think that their service is worth $40/year. When Sony/Nintendo catch up then I will have to make a choice if I want to continue to pay for a service that is available for free from another supplier (which Sony is getting better and better but is not their yet).
Sorry for the long post but it amazes me when people make uniformed/ignorant comments/posts about online gaming.

I was under the impression that when you pay for Xbox Live Gold, you were paying for dedicated servers but from what you stated, you're not?
Nope, he has the same connection as I do, running a Wireless N through 6mb connection. Connection is not the issue.
Explain what is the difference with Xbox Live Gold and what makes it better than the other two, that's what I want to know. Everybody here has said Xbox Live is better but noone has stated what makes it better besides gamertags. Why is it better?
And the last comment, I don't mind the occasional long post so no need for apology. The rest was a little harsh though. I will admit, I am a little ignorant when it comes to every aspect of online gaming though.
I have found your friends problem. Using a wireless connection will add to whatever lag he is experiencing. Also what type of router does he have? He probably has not forwarded the appropriate ports or has to strict of a firewall setting enabled. Both of these issues can contribute to or add lag on top of what will exist normally. The featuresof Xbox Live/360 online service that I thinkbring value:
- Most users have microphones: I enjoy playing online shootersstrategically and being able to easily communicate with my teamates is imperative. PS3 is getting better but not their yet. I do not play the Wii so I really do not know what options it has for mics.
- Cross game chat/private chat options for friends.
- Large and diverse userbase: This can be a double edged sword. It is fun playing with people from all over the world but can be a problem with games such as GEOW2 that do not have dedicated servers and are very susceptible to lag.
- Onlineawareness of all games.
- Intuitive interface...for me at least.
- Large offering ofquality online arcade games.
- Easy to use downloadoptions for expandable games like Rock Band. I have downloaded probably fifty or sixty extra songs for this game and really enjoy the system that is in place.
- Large library of games that interest me. Including PC/360 games that I want to play sitting on a couch in my livingroom not having to worry about updating a computer.
- Netflix, even though I do not use it many of my friends do.
This list is just off the top of my head. As far as being harsh, you really should expect some heated debate when you make a controversial comparison like comparing Nintendo's tacked on online alternative to a unified/refined system that is being offered by MS.
