So do TV... I don't know if you notice the price drop in HDTVs lately.

i got an 52" XBR4 little after release $3,799.99 (last year) and its the same price to this day...

and OLED is like 8-10 years from now, i think an XBR8 should last u until OLED becomes big

I just google it and found many lower price...

i got it from sony store, and sony store has the same price still, also im in canada

also JW where did u find lower price for it? bcz i do know Best buy has a sale right now on all Flat panel TV's and its $3499.99

Here you go...

http://www.123buydirect.com/Cart.asp?CatID=69

umm ur link didnt work but i searched and found it, and im surprised,

1. is that in canada?

2. is that a store u'd want to buy from?

bcz i do get cheap things when i can, but when every store has it for 3.5K+ and that has 2.9K i wonder....

While the plasma is great, LCDs are a far better choice if you are going to be gaming. Then later on, when you do get that gaming PC, your XBR will be able to double as a monitor.

I don't mean price wise. If you get the best PC parts, in about 6 months, your PC is not as "uber" anymore, and those parts you bought are significantly cheaper.

TV's don't drop that much, Pioneers only drop in price when they reach the end of their lifespan (b4 new models come in)

LCD's are not a "far" better choice when it comes to gaming. Games like Condemned look better on plasma TV's since they have better black levels.

Well we can nitpick some PC items for example...

example this item : http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=25345&vpn=BX80562QX6850&manufacture=Intel

It hasn't change much in price...

Or what about this P4 that's still $850...

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=14134&vpn=BX80547PG3800EJ&manufacture=Intel

Lower end model will change price quickly, just like any other electronics.

No it doesn't, even your article doesn'tsay the XBR8 is better, it said the previous demo got owned by a plasm, and sony got a better TV, which looks better than the previous one.

Even the Samsung 950 with LED, 120Hz and dynamic contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1 doesn't have as good blacks as a Pioneer Kuro.

Sony whom with their last generation TV's had lower native and dynamic contrast ratio's than samsung, even when they went outside the norm by making their dynamic C.R.'s 9x native C.R. when eveyone was making it five times native.

Anyway, before you make a comparison as grand as this (especially with TV's) compare them with your eyes not a digital camera.

Besides, it will be almost impossible for an LCD to beat a plasma with Black levels. Especially when areas of the screen on a plasma TV that are pitch black have no activity in that area of the screen, where are an LCD's blacks are artificially created by blocking the light generated by the back lamp, which is why blacks on most LCD's look like dark grey.

Like I said earlier, I really don't care about about Pioneer or Sony's event, Considering how a digital camera is a poor judgment of how television quality.

Anyway, the first LED LCD was a samsung the 81 series, so Sony didn't invent LED. Anyway, I work with TV's and I know for a fact the XBR4 cannot compare with a plasma. The 120Hz was decent, but the black levels sucked. The Samsung 71 series had better black levels.

So I will have to see the XBR8, and I can bet it doesn't look as a plasma with black levels. Not when the black levels on the W series looks like crap.

.....agree there is no point in arguing about this here, considering the XBR8 is not out yet, the current Sony's upto XBR6's cannot stand no where near a plasma in black levels, the Samsungs have a better progression black levels....even the last generation samsung's 71 series had better black levels than the current Sony's (ones available for retail). I have reason to believe that an LED Samsung which is the top LCD in the market as of now is a better competitor to an XBR8......and even the 950 samsung cannot beat a Kuro Plasma.

Believe me, I spend my entire work days with these TV's, and I can tell you there is no way the XBR8 will be better than a Kuro.

OLED is diffrent... and they are the 1st to make an OLED TV....

and the reason im compairing Sony to Pioneer is bcz Pioneer is said to be the best Black, but proof shows sony beat them with the XBR8, ill check into it personally later this year, but i can tell u knwo the XBR4 is a very much underrated LCD and looks amazing (wiht the lights on too 0) ) also i never said it had the best blacks, but it was the 1st LCD line that can compaire to a Plasma.

and dont bring the W series in bcz Bravia Engine 2PROTM Technology (XBR8) vs Bravia Engine 2TM Technology (W series)

XBR is a high end sony TV, the others are pretty bad in comparison

The W and Z series are Sony's best TV's in the market. We have recieved XBR6's but they haven't been displayed yet. Anyway, the XBR8 is an LED TV, not OLED. The first OLED was a Sony 11" 480p TV . The XBR8 uses an LED backlight which was first used by Samsung, and OLED TV's don't require a backlight to process video.

And the XBR4 was actually overrated. Everyone I know who bought it, got it because it was a sony, and the TV didn't look as good as a 71 series.....how do I know because I spent eveyday watching all the XBR's strating from the XBR2's to XBR5's till they were clearanced and gotten rid off, and I can say the same about the 71 series.

The Xbr4 was not even as good as the panasonic 700 series (they were out at the same time) when it came to black levels.....I will not judge other colors since some people prefer their other colors on TV's in a certain way (brighter or darker, I prefer darker).

depend on the tv/computer you arleady have, if you have a crap tv and computer, get a decent tv and a decent computer, don't waste all the monye on one thing. Like $4000 on a tv, what are you thinking?

Wish I had that much disposible income to throw away on 1 product.

Tulak_Hord

The Sony XBRs are awesome for LCDs. Awesome for LCDs. But when it comes to picture, you still can't beat a plasma, as most of the reviews of Panasonic's better models will confirm. As to the Kuro...Well, it's the best plasma out there, which basically makes it the best overall TV out there. The picture quality is awesome, and the black level is...sick.

50" Kuro or a computer? I'm assuming you have a computer now (which is how you posted this question), so I'd say it's no contest; take the Kuro. No matter how good TV technology gets in the next few years, that'll still be a work of art, and in 6 months to a year you'll be able to buy a better computer for cheaper than that one right now. Then again, if you've got a nice TV right now (an aforementioned Panasonic, Sony, or Pioneer HDTV, for example), maybe wait on the Kuro, and get the computer.

In Summary, all that junk about this engine and that engine is garbage. Everyone especially sony can spout that Bravia engine Pro super 2 and stuff, and Samsung will say DNI super engine, and they might do the exact same thing....the measure of good picture quality used to native contrast ratio, until Samsung ruined it and started using dynamic contrast ratio, and everyone started using it, now it looks like a bloated number. The only way to compare TV's is actually comparison's have them in the same lighting, and then change environments.

And I hate to burst your bubble, but for someone that sells these TV's and has sold every Sony since the XBR2's, Sony's is not as great as you make them out to be. They are good, but some indominable force of nature. Even till now there TV's cant be compared to a Kuro, and believe me I have had EVERY Sony out right now side by side with a Kuro....with Blu-Ray and a digital cable feed, and it has bested every Sony when compared.

Your way of realizing it is to stop at a local Magnolia best buy and look for yourself.....it might be hard for you to get them in the same lighting since you don't work there ;)

Anyway, I am done with this. good nite.

I know XBR's are good for LCD's I consider sony to be the second best after samsung, but I was trying to tell him to get off the hype train and see it is not as good as a Kuro. :D

Here's my take on it. Get the TV & also get a PS3. Yeah I know you have an Xbox360 but use that for games & use the PS3 for watching DVDs, Blu-rays & maybe play games(if you want)! The PS3 can already upscale DVDs & Blu-rays will be bloody amazing especially on a Plasma screen!!!! I can assure you that it will be money well spent!

HD-cable is impressive comparing it to its counterpart "regular" cable but Blu-ray movies are truly mind blowing & HD-cable can't hold a candle to it. With a well equipped sound system(5.1 or 7.1 system, preferrably the 7.1), pop in Casino Royale-(blu ray version), some popcorn & with friends. Be ready to be blown away.

Kuro, the vastly superior Kuro display will make up for the extra native resolution of PC Games. A PS3/360 game on a Kuro will look better than a 1920x1200 PC Game on a budget computer monitor

I believe (although I can't remember for sure) that LCDs are more expensive to produce at larger sizes.

Buy a smaller TV then build your own computer. IT costs far less and you'll get better parts.

Its such a shame that fantastic tv will never be used properly by those horrid underpowered consoles.

Now hook a PC up to that baby and you'd get every game in glorious 1080p on a big screen. Trust me, as good as that tv is console games will look horrid at 50" in that sub HD resolution they use.

Yeah I'd go with a cheaper tv, and Buy a gaming computer. You'll probably end up spending less than that $4,000 Behemoth.

If You forced me to choose one, I'd say the computer.

Hey, I'm stuck between 2 choices at the moment. I can either get a 50" Pioneer Kuro Plasma (btw this is the best TV on the market, nothing beats Pioneer Kuro) or a $2000 Gaming Computer (with a 27" Dell 1920x1200 monitor).

It really comes down to console gaming vs pc gaming, where the former is also backed up by the features of watching a TV, movies, etc.

I already have an Xbox 360, so it really comes down to...will Fallout 3 be better on the PC or Xbox? What about Call of Duty, etc. Is Crysis really worth it for the PC? What about Fable 2 for Xbox 360 (as well as Metal Gear Solid for PS3). Or The Witcher for PC?

It's really hard deciding imo and so I thought I might as well create this thread to recieve input! Thanks

(I can have Xbox 360+PS3 for both, but for one of them I'll also have PC Gaming though on a smaller screen)

get... the ... TV....

plasma and gaming isn't a good idea as plasmas have screen burn in issues, ie a amo display will get burnt into the screen forever, its not as bad as it used to be but gaming and plasmas are risky.

I would never spend that much on either one individually. For $2000 I would get a PC, TV, console and have left over money for games and accessories. I mean even something like the EA's Crysis PC would leave you $1300, that should be at least enough for a good TV unless you're extremely picky about image quality, in which case I think you have already answered your own question.

As a general question in TV vs PC? PC easily, I've basically been living without a TV for a year now, and can't say I really miss it.

Yes.. Chairs beat Sofas. Another win for the hermits!

xsubtownerx

Sofas beating Chairs isn't a loss for the hermits either. Since hermits can play on the sofa/couch/bed/whatever too.

@the TC - Get the TV first and start planning out a much cheaper (preferrably under $900) Gaming PC - if needed, ask the PC Hardware board for help on choosing parts and if you need instructions on putting everything together. Building your own highend PC is almost always much cheaper than buying a prebuilt, and in the end you learn something.

u don't need to spend $2000 on a pc. a $600 one can play crysis well.
