Depends on the console. If it's on XBOX, I prefer DD because the disc drive on my XBOX sucks. On PS3, I prefer discs because games take a lot of space on the PS3 HDD. However, if a game I really loved were on both disc and DD, I would probably buy both versions.

I strongly prefer digital copies. No worries about discs getting lost or scratched or worrying about CD keys and DRM or needing the discs in the drive. It's much more convenient.

Downloading the game for several hours isn't convenient at all though. Also, digital games have DRM too.

DD for PC just seems very natural. I dont miss the inconsistant pc game packaging, or the installing of several discs.

I like collecting Console games..but now with the larger harddrives i dont mind DD, though LIVE and PSN need to be a little less greedy and reduce the price of some of their games. Why can Steam offer practically new games for 50 percent off but not Live and PSN?

It depends, for Handhelds I prefer DD because I like to travel light and I view Handheld games as being "lesser" than home console games. For Home Consoles I prefer having the physical case and game disc.

Your poll almost tricked me. Thread title is do you prefer discs to download, so I almost voted yes. I wonder how many people voted without even looking at the poll, just going off the thread title?

well i like DD (just got kings bounty off steam and it was aa smooth experience..as is my steam experience overall). but i prefer a disc for 3 reasons. 1) i like having the box 2) installing from disc is always faster then DD. 3) over here (ireland) boxed copies seem to be alot cheaper than the DD version (sales excluded). recent example...alpha protocol on steam is 50 euro...in my local gamestop the PC version (new of course) is 30 euro.

My DD library has been growing, i have several on 360, and while i might have overpaid a bit it saves space and its easy to shuffle through games and just pick one. And same for steam,

on PC DD is the way to go

as it is right now physical copies can't be returned to most stores and you don't get the services that you get with Steam

on consoles it's the opposite

there are no advantages to DD on consoles atm, and physical copies of console games are still worth something after you buy 'em

If you have a crappy Internet connection maybe. But if you have a good connection like mine it takes me about 2-3 hours to download 10+gb games. Which isn't really a lot more time than me having to go to the store and buy it.

I prefer discs. 1, if I pay for it I'm ready to play it right away, 2, and this is my biggest thing, I like big games, and big games tend to take up alot of space, that space can go towards other things.

You asked one question in your topic title and the opposite question in your poll. :|

On PC I definatly prefer DD, can just take my dozens of steam games and download them from any computer, no limits, other than one location at a time of course.

People with the nostalgic notion of needing game boxes will eventually need to learn to live in the presant.

I will live the future with my vinyl records and my game boxes thank you very much. ;)

If it is from Steam where I can back them up, burn them to disk, install them on as many comps as I wish and as many times as I wish then I love it. Don't see why you wouldn't.

If your talking about Sony and the way they handle it then I'd rather not tyvm.

I don't mind DD, but prefer discs. Don't have to wait hours for a download to finish, and if I ever need to reformat my HDD...don't gotta worry about backing up/re-downloading stuff. It's just a lot less of a hassle.

Downloads are alright but I prefer Game Discs. you know to not use up my Hard Drive Space and when the next generation comes and the next I would look back at my old Game Discs and remember what had come to past and probably play the game again.

Digital Download I would probably have to buy all of the games again on each next Gen Console....well what happens if that Console fails? where does all of that Digital info go? It goes with the console. Heck you can't just go back and get another Wii, 360, or PS3 and redownload those games again when you have the Nintendo _____, Xbox 720, and PS4 out in the market. You probably would have to rebuy everything!

I used to be a hardcore believer in Discs. I loved the box, manual and the DVD but after using steam I can see how convenient it is. Say 10 years down the road I want to play a game on the 360. I am 99% sure the 360 crapped out and will have to pay for a new one. But with steam I just re dl the game and I am good to go. Besides with a hardcopy you pay a percentage of the price to the retailer. With DD there is alot more flexibility in pricing. Battlefield BC2 which just came is selling for 33.99 on pc while it is 59.99 on consoles.

Its more convenient than waiting for a game to ship in the mail... or driving/walking to go get it at a brick and mortar store. Steam games have passive DRM and GOG.com games have absolutely no DRM. The best services offer more things to do with the software than retail copies.

You do own a licence to the game. It also depends on who you buy the game through, as Steam have said that if they ever go bust, then they'll unlock all games for play afterwards.

Whether other DD sites will do the same isn't a certainty, but it seems unlikely they would just stop letting people play those games.

Physical, if only because the options for DD aren't particularly appealing (especially on consoles). Even Steam isn't all that consumer-friendly (sweet sales aside), and generally fails to provide fair value for the rights/abilities you lose when buying from them.

Depends for me honestly. On console I like disks, I like the feeling of having a hard copy of a game. If need be, I can take it to a friends house/family etc etc. With my PC however, I like digital downloads seeing as how I won't really be moving the game/music etc etc around.

Well to be fair, not everyone has a crappy ISP. I have people on my PSN friends list where it would take them 30 minutes to download a 500MB game from the PSN store but for me it only takes 5 minutes and that's just PSN, my download speeds are much more faster on my POS PC. If I were to compare the time it would take me to go buy a game at the nearest game store to my house and the time it would take me to download a multi gig game, the times would be nearly the same assuming the store had the game I wanted in stock, no line and I wasn't travelling with my slow a** friends.

[QUOTE="erglesmergle"]

[QUOTE="110million"] Download them again, I'm starting to think DD-haters don't actually know anything about it.

PSN/XBLA DD might end up not being re-accessible, but PC is the head of the DD movement, and its doing it right. The rest of the issues aren't DD, but how Sony and MS handle them.

nunovlopes

I prefer to be able to take my games anywhere and not be limited to the system I downloaded it on. And I also prefer no to redownload games just so I can play it on the system that doesnt have the game installed.

Do you know what happens if your Steam account gets banned? YOU LOSE ALL YOUR GAMES. Do you know what happens if your PSN / XBL account gets banned? YOU LOSE ALL YOUR GAMES. You know what doesnt happen? Your hard copy games stop working.

I think DD-supporters are too willing to give up their rights. Or they dont really take the time to think about the downsides. If DD does take over, then gone are the days of letting your friends borrow your games. Gone are the days of selling your games. Gone are the days of knowing that in 20 years, your game will still work provided that you have the working system and that the disc is readable. Gone are the days of having a DVD/Game collection shelf. Welcome to the age of Digital Downlods, where you can lose everything at one press of a button. Literally.

Why would my account be banned unless I did something illegal? Valve wants my money, I'm sure they would only ban me if I did a really bad thing. After all, it's in their interest that I continue to use the service. Also, you're not limited to play a game on the system you downloaded into. You can download a game on any number of PCs and you can play on all of them (1 at once of course).

Also, there are plenty of games that even if you buy the physical version they'll be tied to some account and you need to have that account active in order to play. Valve games for example, but there's more.

The issue most people have about not being able to resell used games is a moot point, for the PC at least. Games are so much cheaper that there's no point in reselling them (or buying used). Steam is constantly doing huge promotions where you can buy games really cheap. Take L4D2, a game that came out just a few months ago, you could have bought it 2 weeks ago for 7.65€! I bought STALKER in December for 2€! With these prices, who cares about buying used games?

Why does it matter if you did or didnt do something illegal? The fact is, if you get banned, you lose everything. Your entire gaming collection is in the hands of Valve. End of discussion. I use Steam and I like it a lot, but I also try to buy physical copies of my PC games just to be able to keep the box even if I cant resell the game. Its nice to feel some ownership of something you buy.

Right now with console games, you can resell them, lend them out to friends, play them anywhere you want without redownloading them. Do you really want to lose these rights? Notice how I didnt sayprivileges?

I didn't even know you can download games on Consoles. By Consoles you mean that only the newer ones (360 Ps3 and Wii) can download? I don't think Ps2 or Sega Genesis can download.

Pointless thread...download is the superior option. Steam has a game backup feature so you can save the install files to disc.
online manuals take all romanticism out of gamingDraugenCP
Shame that the manuals from most new game releases now contain only the bare minimum and are only a few pages long.
I just like having a shelf full of gaming boxesDraugenCP
But a lot of the time the default game boxes look terrible and they don't look neat at all in a shelf if some of the boxes are irregular. If you're that keen on having a physical game collection then you should buy your games from a download service such as Steam, back them up to disc (you can do this with all the latest patches applied via Steam so no downloads are necessary upon reinstall), and then create your own superior custom box art. Using a decent printer, get the manual and custom box art printed out and use a disc label printer for the disc.

I prefer to own my games. Digital distribution removes any sense of ownership. Not only can you not sell or trade, but the publishers potentially have the power to remove access to the content you pay for.

This.

I don't buy CD's anymore. I don't buy movies any more. I don't usually buy boxed PC games. I can't wait to stop buying boxed console games. Trading in games for a fraction of what I spent for it is inane to me so I won't miss that. Used game prices can be offset by sales. The developers will see a bigger return when manufacturing costs are cut.

DD is the future. Detractors said the same thing about CD's. Movies are going digital now thanks to streaming and compression/bandwidth improvements. Games will follow suit.

There will likely be a physical copy available for people who prefer it. People still buy vinyl/cds/vhs. But those people are hardly the majority. DD for games is only going to get bigger. More money for less work? The dev's are foaming at the mouth for it.
