Can we please stop this? I don't care what you say or how you do it, paying $500 for a PC and saying that it is powerful is a joke. It may be able to play games fine, and it may be able to play current gen games, but to say it is more powerful or trounces the next gen consoles is a joke. Just stop with this madness.

ronvalencia
Unlike last gen consoles(X360, PS3), PS4 and X1 sports similar GCN design as PCs.

Ok and I will agree with you to a point. But at the end of the day there are way more variables involved with a PC compared to a console. What has been thrown up here as a $500 pc is not anywhere near what AMD specifically designed and built for both SONY and MS. I HATE when people do this. No one is going to spend $500 on a low end crap to build a gaming rig and sit here and tout how powerful it is. Anyone who games on a PC and is actually going to sit here and claim they would purchase this equipment and game on it for years to come is kidding themselves.

That PSU will do fine and it has solid ratings on Newegg. His build has a recommendation of 405W for PSU, so 500W with a +12V single rail will be more than enough.

Quite honestly, you can't make a PC work like a console for any amount of money. Posts like this only reinforce the idea that some people just can't look past hardware power as the sole determinant of the quality of one's experience. Software and services matter too, and the underlying design philosophies of those are entirely different between the PC and consoles.

I always laugh at threads like this. Yes, you can build a PC for equivalent hardware as the consoles (or slightly better) for the same price.

However, having the same hardware doesn't mean they perform the same. Consoles have the benefit of standardized hardware and low level access to the hardware. A HD7850 on a console will easily be 50% more optimized than one on a PC.

And that's not even counting the shitty PC components that most people will have to bare with to get a PC which matches the price of a console. A lot of this PC-console price threads portray the PC as being cheap, but with no mention on reliability whatsoever. Some of them even include 20 dollar PSUs and 5 dollar mice for argument's sake. I'd rather pay for a 800 dollar PC than use shitty PC parts.

It's also lacking KB/M and optical drive. All in all, his build will hit about $600 and be approx. as powerful as a PS4.

Of course, consolites conventiently forget to mention that their systems are incapable of online play throughout the gen at $400-500. You'll actually pay that much just to be allowed to play the entire version of your games. Oh yeah, and no backwards compatibility.

Real console price = $800-900.

Yeah, that's the one thing most people neglect - the OS. And how bout the DVD drive? And since consoles are using Blu-ray, we should be pricing in Blu-ray drives as well.

You don't need a DVD drive, and you can recycle Windows (~90$ fresh). (also, you can recycle the drive; mine's not even pluged in)

One criticism to these builds, 2GB of VRAM will be your bottleneck; just because only a couple games go over that now, doesn't mean that most won't be over that soon.

Not only that, but people seem to forget what a console actually costs. Its similar to what AT&T and Verizon do with phones. They subsidize the cost, eat it at first and hope to make it up with long range sales and sales from games and other forms of revenue through their services. If MS and Sony wanted to really make money off the bat, I would not be surprised if these consoles would start off around $800-$1000. Around where a mid range - high range gaming rig would cost.

Dude, everyone could certainly use a DVD drive. Saying that you don't need one is basically arguing for argument's sake. Anyone who really buys a PC would get a drive. It's one of those 'no-brainer' decisions. Ironically, most of these kind of threads play out like that. People start comparing prices but strictly for comparison's sake. However, they themselves will do things differently when buying a PC for their own use.
I'm actually in the market for a strong laptop under $500, any tips?Blake135

For Gaming ? I honestly wouldn't recommend a Gaming Laptop, Some people might try to convince you but every single person I know who has got one it ended up having problems.

I personally haven't had problems with mine, it's still humming along just fine. But honestly when I look back on it, I don't think I would do it again. When I got my m17x r3 I was in school, 4 people crammed into tiny apartment so space was tight and I was going to school for 3-D design, so I needed something with actual power and I hated using the greasy keyboards at the school and always transfering large files to a ext. HDD all the time, sometimes they would take 15-20 min to transfer due to the slower PC's at the school and the fact the files can get huge. I don't regret it in because of that, it's just that now I don't think I could ever justify the price tag again (still priced better than a mac though).

And now to be on topic, a 500 PC ends up being junk. If your gonna go PC, do it right and give yourself a budget of 800-1000 so you can actually buy name brand parts that wont fry in a year.

Console Optimizations aren't myth, My first PC config was a Athlon x2 5000 and 2 7900 GT's in SLi with 2gb of ram. It could not keep up with gaming in the long run. Sure, it played oblivion and such titles better, but it really started to show it's age on later games to the point where to me they were unplayable on low settings and very jumpy frame rates.

I shall see how my current desktop will fair, i7 3930k, 16gb ram and 2gb GTX 680 as we move into this coming generation. I do actually feel that it could be very different this gen as my current PC does actually blow the consoles out of the water from the get go, but PC only and games that take advantage of PC might make my 680 become outdated in a few years.

Then consider the following facts: a GTX titan overclocked is able to just barely produce 60 fps on Crysis 3 completely maxxed out. That is a $1050.00 card. A PS4 is expected by the end of next gen be able to produce the same graphics or better (based on KZ:SF today) but at most likely 30 fps.

So how will a $500 PC with a 7870 GPU, that can't even produce 10 fps with Crysis 3 maxxed, beat a PS4 a few years from now ?

You are grasping at straws.

AdjacentLives

lol this arguement is a joke (its obvious that you do not own the game). It can barely get 60FPS because two of the settings aren't optimized (shaders and motion blur). If you set motion blur to medium (motion blur is PREFERENCE setting) and set shading to medium (not even noticeable if you have shadows on very high) then your FPS doubles....... (A GTX 660 Ti/7870XT OC or higher with that tweak can get you 60FPS). Nice try tho (why don't you actually play the game instead of make assumptions)

Yeah but in 3-5 years you'll still be able to pop a game into either console and play it without any issues. If you want to do the same with that PC you'll need to lower graphic settings and hope you can run it at a stable framerate.

There are massive advantages to closed platform hardware.

If you're going to build a PC, build a good one. Don't set your minimum specs just enough to beat the damn consoles. If you're going to do that, buy a damn console and play that. It will last you longer without the issues of an aging PC.

If the last 10 years of PC ownership has taught me anything it's that olders PCs have more problems than they are worth.

PC is too expensive.

if you're a filthy peasant

Why don't you say that everytime someone posts about a 400 gaming PC? Why else would a 400 dollar PC be relevant except for peasant-esque PC gamers?

Yeah except it won't last the whole *Console Generation* However if your a smart buyer you could easily build a very expensive PC then wait until *Steam Sales* to get your games.

I don't buy consoles for power. Yes, PC's are more powerful than the PS4, but that is not my reason behind wanting a PS4.

most people have a television in the living room.

Unfortunately you cant use a M/KB on the couch, and most people dont have a computer desk in their living room.

Pretty sure my PC from 2006 with a simple upgrade(~$150) would outperform the X1. How many 360s from '05/'06 even lasted 2yrs., let alone went on to beat 2 next-gen systems for +$150?

---

But anyway, why not build a rig to around the same spec as the PS4/X1? Is the PC gaming experience solely defined by console-beating gfx and specs? The most appealing aspects for me are the customization, indie and mod community, and unique gaming experiences that can't be found on a console.

Whenever I use my PC in the living room I just hook it up to the TV via HDMI and use my wireless 360 controller (havn't tried my ps3 controller yet but the 360 controller works perfect).

"Most people"? That's a statement which requires data.

I'm an individual. So I'll just take a photo of what is right in front of me.

In this photo we can see a PC plugged into a television and Battlefield 3 is being played. So I didn't buy a seperate display.

"Unfortunately you cant use a M/KB on the couch" - I am of the species 'homo sapiens', I can and do use the mouse and keyboard on the couch often. Helps if you're wearing jeans, there's also a coffee table. What species are you? Also, you might notice a USB coming out the front of the PC - she plays with a controller. And she is usually the best player on the team. If I were playing Guild Wars 2 on the couch I can play with keyboard and mouse comfortably.

"most people dont have a computer desk in their living room." Desks are not necessary for gaming PCs.

If one should factor in a display when buying a gaming PC, then I'd suggest one also should factor in a display when buying a console.

Most people do have a television in the living room. And, unless it's older than a last-gen console, any PC will plug into it, just as simply as a console would. And actually, it's not hard (or expensive) to use a comfortable lap-desk/platform for a mouse and keyboard on the couch. Actually quite comfortable. Also, the vast majority of modern PC games, including all multiplats, and even most exclusives, aside from strategy games, are fully plug-n-play compatible with a 360 controller.

Bottom line: don't be a fanboy living in denial. You can't include the price of a monitor with a PC, comparing to the price of a console, unless you include the price of your TV with your console. And every console gamer I know has a TV that cost 2-3x as much as any monitor I would buy for a budget PC.

Give the PS3 controller a try, if you like the feel of it. You'll need a program called motioninjoy, which basically just makes the dualshock emulate a 360 controller. You'll also have to deal with 360 buttons in on-screen prompts, unless you want to use mods to change them. But if you're experienced enough with both controllers, that shouldn't be too hard to do.
