The only DVD players in my house are the ones in our PC's. I still watch VHS, and our TV's are all standard definition, you can still see what's going on clear enough to be entertained. For me the upgrade to DVD was a mere nuisance, aside from the convenience for gaming(which was a few years into the formats life, for me). Now because of this I can only watch new movies on my PC, or hook my PC up to a TV, unless I buy a DVD player, in spite of the fact that there is a VHS player attached to every TV. (if we buy just one DVD player, and DVD movies, we can only watch them on one TV, do we have to get a DVD player for every room as well as make all our old movies redundant?)
So while I expect Blu-ray will probably become the standard in a few years, as it is technically superior and winning if not drawing in the format war, for many people it will still be nothing more than an inconvenience. Many of my college-mates do not want to upgrade their players, especially when we know that once this is standard, there'll probably be an even bigger and better format after that.
Aside from that, many of you make the statement that you need a 30"+ HDTV and then you'll see how much better BD is. Some of you even make the requirement 60"+. Do you live in the real world? Do you REALLY think that most people, even the ones who can afford to buy movies often, can afford such pointless luxuries(without the oh-so-often going into debt)? For the sake of the people who live above the poverty line, but below the "I don't realise how well off I am" line, I hope the current DVD standard is still supported for many years.
