recently we've had things like E3 06 and TP's flop as major events in sw history.

captainlouie

it cracks me up that you threw that in. e3 a flop? yes. tp a flop? it needs to be ranked below 8 by more reviewers then just gamespot. but it receiving an 8.8 by jeff. that will be remembered.

Below 9 on GS = flop. Sorry bud.

It used to be a lower standard...but that was like in Lithium iirc.

i don't want to go off topic and argue this. well, i do. but i feel like i shouldn't. the point is. this "flop" will not go down in history as the tc claims. the argument of jeff and the 8.8 score though. that's history.

Maybe so, but the 8.8 will be back when the next Zelda is being hyped.

Awesome stuff.  I've been around SW on and off pretty much since the beginning but I never got too heavily in to the community of it, but some of those names were very familiar and brought back some great memories.

Those were better days for SW, I always liked it here because it was a little more controlled than the completely uncensored, chaotic newsgroups I used to visit.  But these days even I think the amount of lockdown on SW has stifled the creativity and level of community found here.

i'm curious.  after super mario sunshine, the tc said that the majority of sheeps demanded that gamerankings be used to determine if a game is a flop or not.

was that demand met back then?

Has any other people that are still SW posters today made SW history yet?blizzvalve
If not historical, many memorable ones... Twinblade, Thug Pikachu, greg_splicer a.k.a. Nasos_3333, PS3_FTW, YoFoo, wok7, etc. These will go down history in System Wars's hall of shame.

just noticed the web-archive link. ok, I've had these links for a while now, but wasn't sure when to use them. With everyone being so nostalgic today, I figured now is the time to let people see the old days of GS and SW, well some stuff anyway.

through the magic of web-archiving you can actually view old websites that have been "deleted" these sites have been archived for viewing purposes, some links work on these pages, most do not, so if you want to read some of these threads, you may be sent to the current day Cnet forums or current GS forums when clicking on the actual thread title. Many images also will not show up, remember these pages are archived so not everything works right.

this is as far back as the archiving goes. Any links to the forum via 2004-2006 take you to the
current SW forums page. These are the major times of SW right here during the lithium days. Many pages are viewable,
many links don't work.

unfortunately some of the most historic stuff that happened here is nowhere to be found in the
archive. But still this stuff is old school so check it out!

I remember when I first started posting here. I thought it was hilarious. Haven't really left, but I barely post now a days. We used to have great debates, packed full of ownage. Now owning some one isn't nearly as great as it used to be and the rules of this forum have become communist like.

I've been coming to Gamespot since the late 90s, but I really didn't start posting in the forums to about 2002.

By the way, this is an awesome thread. Brings back a lot of memories.

[QUOTE="JPOBS"]

[QUOTE="ZIMdoom"]I think you need to add how the term "flop" started and quickly fell from having meaning and standards to what it is now...something every game gets slapped with. You may also want to mention the attempt at a flop review committee which I vaguely remember forming.ZIMdoom

I was on a hiatus during the OFJC phase. I considered mentioning it, but because i dont know much about them i figured i'd let someone else fill us in.

if anyone knows aout it, post and explain and i'll edit.

I can't remember who started it or who was involved.   The idea was to stop every single game from being called a flop by fanboys by setting up a standard a flop must meet.   They used scores vs the amount of hype vs expectations.  So a game that had very little hype and wasn't a big hit could score a 7 and not be considered a flop.  Whereas games that got tons of hype and people expected to be AAA would be considered a flop if they didn't get a 9 or higher.

The OFJC didn't last long as the number of fanboys greatly outnumbered them and they kept calling every game a flop anyway.  Now the term flop refers to ANY game, no matter how much hype, that scores less than 9.  Games like Halo 3 that have high expectations have to score pretty much perfect or else they too get called a flop.

It'll be interesting if anybody remembers who was on the OFJC.

I chuckled when I saw Whipit's name on there.  I think he's still around under another name and somewhat less fanatical (but not too much).  There was a thread a couple weeks ago where another user, Rosencrantz, claimed to have reported Whipit, leading to a ban and then Whipit sent him some nasty pm's.  He hasn't been seen since I don't think.

It was ZackVII that started it...SW voted on a select group of respectable SW users, and had them take control as the OFJC members...thing is, none of the voted OFJC members actually cared about the OFJC, outside of a select few :?

Thanks to everyone who's putting in info. Theres no such thing as too much history.

and blackbond, i tried not to mention rampant retarded fanboys because they bring out the worst in us. lol.

DXGreat1_HGL

Some of us can almost collaberate on an unofficial biography of this place.

 Other things:

  1. One of my most famous battles - It was between a sheep called IamJesse and me. I once mentioned the 8 bit era and how Nintendo screwed Sega out of it and it started a heated debate between the 2 of us. I just thought it was funny how I provided links of all of the legal trouble Nintendo got into and Jesse would still not admit Nintendo did anything wrong.
  2. The fanboy factions - Early on there was the Xbox army, followed by the Nintendo Mafia and then the Xbox Pirates. It turned out to be just groups of fanboys that would flame anyone that disagreed. The Pirates were out of fun to fight the Mafia.

Iono if anyone remembres or not, but the fanboy factions were mostly fakes....the N-Mafia was made up of a bunch of noobs, who wanted justice for Nintendo (this was, I believe the pre-Pikmin 2 era, when the Cube was getting RAPED in SW with a lack of AAA titles) and while everyone was annoyed by them, a few SW.com/SW2 members created the PSBatallion, and followed with the XBOX Pirates to take on the N-Mafia, and raise hell in SW. This also was the start of GS faculty going over to SW.com, and giving warnings to everyone about spamming the GS forums....and SW.com members responding by making pr0n attacks on things like the OFJC, and SW.

I'm guessing no one remembers the ThuggyLemmingG era, the SW freestyle Sundays, or the mlsab/M&R spam threads :-*

[QUOTE="JPOBS"] most of the gamespot Nmafia still exists in The Lounge. but they dont perform in thier sw'ing anymore.

Infernal246

Private Off-topic UCB.

Unfortunately one of the biggest members of the NMafia, jmar, isn't here anymore. :(

The Lounge was never the real N-Mafia...

After the fanboy factions died, and larzuck created his own version of the N-Mafia (something about N-Thuggin', I forget what it was called though...he used a lot of G-Unit references) the original Lounge members teamed up with SGT Candy/M&R and created a fake N-Mafia....which served the purpose of flaming Larzuck, and making fun of him

Just a few things to point out:

1. A lot of things were more funny back then because they were new, not like nowadays where the topics have been done to death.

2. There was a LOT of crap and frankly disgusting stuff posted on the forums, you only remember the good and forget the bad.

Hoobinator

Well yeah SW is sometimes full of crap and thats why this is such a great thread. It reminds us why SW is fun.if we made a thread about every lame post,n00b,flamebait argument, fakeboys etc we would probably never end.

Also its never worth it to remember bad stuff.

BTW...

Wow, thanks for the history.  I've been around for a little over three years but I rarely post and instead just enjoy reading what others have to say.  WHile Gingerdivid and Yo_Foo annoyed the crap out of me, i do miss them, they brouth "teh funny" to SW.

Ugh, this is like that off topic board post that contemplated the existence of KingFrizzy or something to that degree. Except I don't see lots of vets rushing in.solidsnakeEx3
The vets rushed in on that thread because it was complete inaccurate trash

Hmm, I was here around 2k3-4, right up until World of Warcraft came out. Then I went on hiatus for about 2 and a half years. I've had an assload of names. Most memorable thing for me was "London, France."

[QUOTE="Infernal246"]

The period of time from Wind Waker to Pikmin 2 was hell on the sheep.

Didn't the board rename them the "owned" for awhile? TOHBO

Corvin

I don't remember that but I do remember times when the Nintendo fanboys were so owned that even threads that had absolutely nothing to do with Nintendo games inevitably ended up with, "TSHBO!"

Post 1: "LOL Brute Force on the xbox flops so hard! "

Post 2: "TSHBO!!! "

that happened for years after at sw2 and still happens at sw.com. lol.

I haven't been here that long compared to most of you guys. I discovered this place during the summer of '06 and I had a different name. Although I did witness the infamous Twinblade105 threads and was there during his notorious Hitler/Einstein post.

It's a shame there are so many restrictions now. It sounds like this was a fun place during the "Golden Age". :PÂ
