Yes, and for some time now. Though I'm perfectly happy with Dolby 5.1.Are there any sound systems out now that support 7.1?

I perfer the PS Store to Marketplace. It's much easier to find things on, marketplace is kind of a jumbled messironwarrior2You can dowload and go around with Xbox live, on PS3 you have to wait to dowload and it takes time too. The servers arent up to snuff compared to MS network.
I heard it supports 7.1.Spartan070it does, but I have mines hooked up to 5.1. I gotta upgrade soon.
I know the sound is the first thing I look for in a game, not gameplay or graphics, but sound. Come on, you can't justify the $600 waste the PS3 is for, "it has great sound."air0123Its an advantage that PS3 has over MS. I mean listen, the 360 is the better system because of the games, and I think it has a better design build, but Im not gonna be blind to what I think is better or know whats better. Sony has a great sound scheme, when you are playing 7 . 1 TRUE HD sound via HDMI's on a great game I think you can appreciate it.

Yes, that's true. But when I download things on PS3 I just change the input chanal on my tv from HDMI to VGA and play 360.
 I don't even have surround sound.waynehead895I do but I don't have all my speakers connected at the moment, doesnt bother me at all...
Wow didnt know how much better the sound can be on the PS3. One thing for sure is the PS3 has a much better sound scheme, you can go HDMI into a reciever and get TrueHD dolby, DTS, and so on. This is one advantage Sony has, overall I am still testing out the system for the PS3 and I can definitely tell you the online so far and the menus arent even close to where Xbox live is.SystemWarsManhow is the sound output options, for example, is there optical sound whether you use HDMI or Component cables?

Or you can do what I did, use optical for sound and HDMI for video. Not as good, but my sound system doesn't have HDMI input

I have 7.1 i think, its pretty dam awsomeR-Dot-Yung7.1 came out just 6 months ago. You sure you have it?

believe me i would love to see how 7.1 sounds, but now I have 1 wii, 1 ps3, 3 360s, and 4 hd tv's. My wife said thats it, I had to beg her today to get the PS3 and her not to be mad at me.if you only have tv speakers... does it sound any better??? I kind of want to buy those surround sound headphones....because i dont want to buy all out surround sound...but i want surround sound...only thing is the headphones cost $100...which i think is pretty ridiculous for headphones..ChipmunkDeluxeIf you want surround sound you need 5 speakers, the other stuff is nothing compared to the real thing. True XT surround sucks to me, just need the speakers to do it right.

*Plays Company of heroes in 9.1 surround*wow great game and my 6800 Ultra actually can run the game.

I have my doubts, Im assuming the headphones have differenent regions and when something is behind you the back part of the headphones make noise. I just dont think it comes close to a 5.1 system. Always felt that way.

Admits ? Did anyone say the PS3 didnt have good sound capabilities ? I can't WAIT to HEAR Killzone ^^ Moo!DressYouUp
ITs one of the PS3's stregnths thats never mentioned at a site like this.
heck, I didn't even know.
It's PS3 is worse here, and PS3 is worse here, and PS3 sucks, but I am surprised it can do :
7.1 and all that, pretty impressive for the cows.

I would not go so far as to say that justifys the purchase, but great sound does make a big differance. To me anyway.

Yeah, I'm aware that the PS3 is capable of outputting 8 channels of audio (7.1) via HDMI, however a device compatible with Linear PCM 7.1 is required to output 7.1 audio from the HDMI OUT connector. So the vast majority of people, even with HDMI will still be maxing out at 5.1, or will be using the optical out which supports 5.1, or the standard AV connector which only supports stereo.
I'm also aware that the 360 is capable of outputting 6 channels of audio (5.1) using the optical out. I was wondering if the TC had ever connected his 360 to use the features, because alot of people have not. If he had, I wanted to know if he felt there was a difference in quality from one platform to the other.
Also, since you mentioned it, there are some articles about the 360s audio features around the web as well. Here is an excerpt from one found at IGN: http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/675/675615p1.html
"IGN: How is the Xbox 360 handling sound differently than current generation of consoles?
John Griffin: One thing with the Xbox 360, first off, I'll talk to you a little about the sound aspect, which is really where our focus is, is that the Xbox 360 supports Dolby 5.1 and Pro Logic II. The reason it supports both technologies is that it's important to support both digital and analog audio output. One of the messages that we want to let people know is that for those who buy the premium Xbox 360 package, that actually includes an HD cable with a digital audio output. So, for anyone wanting to get the most out of their 360, they need to have that digital audio cable hooked up to their 5.1 system. You need to buy a separate optical cable for sound, and they're really cheap. You can find them just about anywhere. I think they're around $10 or $15. It's my understanding that the Core unit doesn't have the option for the optical audio out, so that's something people should know as well. So, in other words, if you want to use 5.1 sound, and you have the Core package, you'll need to buy an additional and separate HD cable."
