Wow didnt know how much better the sound can be on the PS3.  One thing for sure is the PS3 has a much better sound scheme, you can go HDMI into a reciever and get TrueHD dolby, DTS, and so on.  This is one advantage Sony has, overall I am still testing out the system for the PS3 and I can definitely tell you the online so far and the menus arent even close to where Xbox live is.

I know the sound is the first thing I look for in a game, not gameplay or graphics, but sound. Come on, you can't justify the $600 waste the PS3 is for, "it has great sound."

Yes, and for some time now. Though I'm perfectly happy with Dolby 5.1.

Its an advantage that PS3 has over MS. I mean listen, the 360 is the better system because of the games, and I think it has a better design build, but Im not gonna be blind to what I think is better or know whats better. Sony has a great sound scheme, when you are playing 7 . 1 TRUE HD sound via HDMI's on a great game I think you can appreciate it.

Yes, that's true.  But when I download things on PS3 I just change the input chanal on my tv from HDMI to VGA and play 360.

Does anyone know what the 360 or Wii support for sound?

One thing is for sure, the PS3 is definately built to last the rapid change in technology.  Kudos to Sony for them making a machine that won't be outdated in a year.

You can go HDMI out of PS3 into HDMI in reciever, out HDMI reciever to TV. Basically you need two HDMI cords, and about an 800 dollar reciever. Think 600 is alot lol.....

Well I think Sony made a major mistake taking on the RSX and I think the Ram architecture is gonna hurt them. 360 uses optical and you can get 5.1 dolby digital, and wii geez has analog all the wall...

well that sucks, I have an HDMI HD-TV, but my receiver does not have HDMI inputs, so I guess I would have to use component cable to use my THX Surround Sound System.

If you want surround sound you need 5 speakers, the other stuff is nothing compared to the real thing. True XT surround sucks to me, just need the speakers to do it right.

some of us dont have room for surround systems, like me, unfortunately, so my next thing goes to video quality, not graphical goodness, but the quality of the video outputted by the system on my LCD HDTV.

would $100 surround sound headphones work?? I would think they would...considering they're covering your ears completely...

I have my doubts, Im assuming the headphones have differenent regions and when something is behind you the back part of the headphones make noise. I just dont think it comes close to a 5.1 system. Always felt that way.

well what would surround sound do differently?? The sound from the headphones can come from all different directions, angles, and volumes making it just like surround sound.... im not an expert but it sounds right...

Supposedly thats going to bne fixed in the spring "major firmware update" but we'll see what happens.  I can testify that waiting for a 625MB demo to download and even being able to listen to music or chat with someone is very annoying and requires patience beyond mine.

There was an article about PS3's audio capabilities on here about a half a year ago.  To me it seems what the PS3 can do in terms of audio is great especially just regular audio output.  It allows for about 512 different sounds to be going at the same time.  I don't know what 360 can do as there was no article on it.

ITs one of the PS3's stregnths thats never mentioned at a site like this.

heck, I didn't even know.
It's PS3 is worse here, and PS3 is worse here, and PS3 sucks, but I am surprised it can do :

7.1 and all that, pretty impressive for the cows.

[QUOTE="klactose"][QUOTE="SystemWarsMan"]Wow didnt know how much better the sound can be on the PS3. One thing for sure is the PS3 has a much better sound scheme, you can go HDMI into a reciever and get TrueHD dolby, DTS, and so on. This is one advantage Sony has, overall I am still testing out the system for the PS3 and I can definitely tell you the online so far and the menus arent even close to where Xbox live is.Tiefster
Did/do you have your 360 connected so you could take advantage of DTS or Dolby Digital? Just wondering if you felt there was a difference between the 360s 5.1 and the PS3's 5.1

There was an article about PS3's audio capabilities on here about a half a year ago.  To me it seems what the PS3 can do in terms of audio is great especially just regular audio output.  It allows for about 512 different sounds to be going at the same time.  I don't know what 360 can do as there was no article on it.

Yeah, I'm aware that the PS3 is capable of outputting 8 channels of audio (7.1) via HDMI, however a device compatible with Linear PCM 7.1 is required to output 7.1 audio from the HDMI OUT connector. So the vast majority of people, even with HDMI will still be maxing out at 5.1, or will be using the optical out which supports 5.1, or the standard AV connector which only supports stereo.

I'm also aware that the 360 is capable of outputting 6 channels of audio (5.1) using the optical out. I was wondering if the TC had ever connected his 360 to use the features, because alot of people have not. If he had, I wanted to know if he felt there was a difference in quality from one platform to the other.

Also, since you mentioned it, there are some articles about the 360s audio features around the web as well. Here is an excerpt from one found at IGN: http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/675/675615p1.html

"IGN: How is the Xbox 360 handling sound differently than current generation of consoles?

John Griffin:
One thing with the Xbox 360, first off, I'll talk to you a little about the sound aspect, which is really where our focus is, is that the Xbox 360 supports Dolby 5.1 and Pro Logic II. The reason it supports both technologies is that it's important to support both digital and analog audio output. One of the messages that we want to let people know is that for those who buy the premium Xbox 360 package, that actually includes an HD cable with a digital audio output. So, for anyone wanting to get the most out of their 360, they need to have that digital audio cable hooked up to their 5.1 system. You need to buy a separate optical cable for sound, and they're really cheap. You can find them just about anywhere. I think they're around $10 or $15. It's my understanding that the Core unit doesn't have the option for the optical audio out, so that's something people should know as well. So, in other words, if you want to use 5.1 sound, and you have the Core package, you'll need to buy an additional and separate HD cable."

Even if it's a jumbled mess (to you) you can DL, and continue to surf marketplace, play arcade games or some games (if the game doesn't let the DL continue, usually on online play, it will continue when you get off automatically).
