A Lemming who now owns a PS3 admits........

I haven't seen a reciever/ss unit with a 7.1 true HDMI input/output for less then $2000. I know Bose, Polk, Infinity, Harmon Kardon, and Onkyo make a few nice ones, but they are out of my price range for now.

Personally I think optical 5.1 is pretty dam good.

Wow didnt know how much better the sound can be on the PS3.  One thing for sure is the PS3 has a much better sound scheme, you can go HDMI into a reciever and get TrueHD dolby, DTS, and so on.  This is one advantage Sony has, overall I am still testing out the system for the PS3 and I can definitely tell you the online so far and the menus arent even close to where Xbox live is.SystemWarsMan

I think the PS store is much more organised, but then again, it has a tiny fraction of the content available on LIVE.

I don't have DD 5.1 or 7.1 but my Sharp Aquos does have simulated sourround sound which sounds sooo much better than regular white/red cables,

btw my tv has a optical audio port, should I use that unstead of he component audio cables or hdmi?

there are, but they are usually only available at high end audio stores. i usually play mine with high quality headphones.

i will have to agree with the TC here. i love my 360 and my PS3, but the PS3 does produce better sound, in my opinion.

Component is a video connection, it has nothing to do with audio.

"Optical" isn't a sound, it is an output type for audio (much like how those red and white jacks can output audio, HDMI can output audio, a coax cable can output audio, etc.) If you use optical cables to output audio from your PS3 you can NOT get lossless audio from it. If you try to output lossless codecs or LPCM from your PS3 using optical the audio will automatically be downmixed to stereo. If you want to get true surround sound using an opitcal cable you can only output the standard Dolby Digitial 5.1 lossy format.

To get the best audio, lossless formats and LPCM, you have to be outputting using and HDMI connection.

You can run HDMI to your TV and use the optical out on the PS3 to your receiver.

You just have to set it up on the PS3 to do so..

Why is this suprising? Many PS3 games have uncompressed sound. EVERY 360 game has compressed sound.

I use the HDMI for video and an optical cable for audio. You can choose all those options you mentioned.

It's worth mentioning that the PS3 can even output audio in the AAC format, and all the others cited by the TC.

ya dude you do background downloads for things and then you can go search the rest of the store, play games or do what you would normally do, but you can't do that for installs, you have to wait till that's done, idk how it's on the 360.

I hate listening to people go on about their sound systems. Very annoying when you hate loud noises, and use head phones for everything, including consoles.WasntAvailable

currently i have the 1000w bravia 5.1 surround sound set with wireless speakers, and the sound is amazing, i play COD4 when no1 is home with high volume and when sum1 shoots, the bass produced makes the picture/picture frames on my nearby walls vibrate... too much fun

but hey everyone has their own choice

You can do HDMI and optical sound cables with the XBox 360 into your receiver. I really haven't compared the two side by side. Both sound great to me. I have a 5.1 setup with subwoofer. It rocks.
