Face it, Fallout 3 was Oblivion with a different setting and a few improvements. Oblivion was released 2 years earlier and what was great back then wasn't as impressive when Fallout 3 did it.

Both are equal imo,I had a hard time enjoying both (although I did manage to shell around 20 hours in each game) because I had a hard time getting used to the:

1. Bugs and crashes that are so rampant with Bugthesda Failworks' games

2. Used to them originally being CRPGs and the sudden change to it becoming action-adventure like than RPG was hard getting used to

3. Their annoying inventory and character screens (More on TES4 than Fallout3)

4. The horrid writing of Fallout 3

5. Stupid npc pathing system

6. May other reasons I've forgotten

I love both games and both have their strengths and weaknesses but Oblivion I poured almost 400 hours into on one save.

FO3 wasn't even 100 on multiple saves.

Both are great and prolly in my top 10 for the gen. but I agree with GS.

Personally, I don't think either of them deserves a 9.0+, so it'd be a little silly of me to argue over which one deserves less of an AAA score.

Now, The Neverhood being a 4.9, THAT'S just criminal...

Fallout 3 is better(imo), but it did not have nearly the effect that oblivion had when it came out.

Note:

Oblivion ONLY had an "effect" if you never played Morrawind Elder Scrolls that came before it. It got a mediocore score but was a better game by a large margin.

seeing what Oblivion is and what Marrowind was the scores should be flip flopped...I guess that's what hype can do for a game.

I have morrowind and had it long before oblivion came out. It was a great game and I loved the mods.

But Oblivion had amazing graphics, amazing voice work, and felt very immersive.

Altought both games got old not to long after. Can't play either of them without getting very bored now.

I'm one of those people who actually loved Fallout 1 and 2 on PC years back, and what I will say is, Fallout 3 f*cking sucked.

And oddly enough, I enjoyed Oblivion. I'm sticking with the STALKER series for good post-apocalyptic games.

I say, "who cares." Why does someone's opinion matter that much that would warrant this topic to be created? They are both great games, and despite their similarities, are very different. Just play them and like them for what they are and not for what two reviews say... But if you still must know, I myself liked Fallout 3 just a tad more; however, Oblivion has some better mods that if you take them into account, it is better. So, I guess I agree.

Agree. Oblivion was epic and just had this great medieval atmosphere, as well as being much deeper, longer and bigger than FO3.

Traditionally Gamespot have always underrated Fallout games, but in Fallout 3's case I think they got it right.

They overrated Oblivion though.

Even considering the cliffracers and bugs, Morrowind is still easily superior to Oblivion in almost every non-technical aspect. :)

I said "almost every", but I can't say I agree that the combat was improved by a lot.

There's even a downside to voicing all dialog: mods that add new dialog also have to be voiced or else they feel really wrong.

I loved Oblivion at first, but it's numerous flaws creeped up on me soon enough. Fallout 3 improved upon on a lot of the things that were wrong with Oblivion, had a more interesting setting and a much better combat system. They're both great games, but Fallout 3 has the edge, for me at least.

It's the same on most sites, and I disagree heavily with it, I think TES4 is the most critically overrated game. But I think a lot of it is down to Oblivion being the first really big "RPG" this gen, it wowed people with its graphics and big world in a time when the competition on HD consoles was slim at best.

the only reason why ive put more hours into oblivion and why i had more fun is because i bought the goty edition which came with knights of the nine and shivering isle. There were also TONS of mods. This may sound abit repetitive but i enjoyed clearing the oblivion gates.
