When I first got my Xbox 360 back about a year ago, I thought that the achivement points was such a gimmick. I thought to myself it was stupid for a person to play a game just to get achievement points and cared for it so much. I wasn't really into it that much. But about 2 months ago I got the Wii and started playing Zelda and Monkey Ball. I noticed that I felt NO sastifaction upon completing the game. Don't get me wrong, Zelda was a great game, but I didn't have that feeling I did like I when I got my 100 pistol kill in Gears of War or Defeating the blacklist in Need for Speed on my Xbox 360. It just felt really awesome to have that little block pop up saying "Achievement Unlocked". I really am glad that Ps3 is hoping on and doing that trophy idea and I hope the Wii does something like that too.hoankiemdinh

Yeah they are awesome, I fgound myself today trying to survive 60 secs in Geometry wars evolved :@ I suck at that game but it's awesome.
I don't understand the point of achievements. It is just giving you points for winning the game. Doesn't really make the game better, and doesn't increase the games length. Most achievements are annyoing, and almost impossible to get. I must be the only one who thinks this because almost everyone else is screaming that achievements are godly.drsports1980Indeed, I don't need a game to tell me what ive accomplished.
Perhaps if a fraction of these achievments translated over to MS Points, they would be worth bragging about. But as it stands, theyre worthless.

You are right. You don't understand acievment points.
You do not only get them for completing the game, but you can earn them for completing the game in interesting ways, doing interesting things, or playing the game in a way that you usually wouldn't. For example, in Call of Duty 3 you achievements like this:
-Blow up five Nazis with one gernade
-Complete an entire level using only melee attacks.
-Complete a level using only German weapons
Etc. And there are dozens more cool ones like those. Every good game has achievements like this and more. They give you a reason to play the game over in a non-standard way, or you might even earn one of these by accident, which feels rewarding. You throw a beautiful grenaded and Nazi's go flying everywhere, and BAM! Achievement earned!
Not only do they give you fun rewards for playing in new and different ways (extending replay value) but you have a permanent online record of doing these tasks. Someone doesn't believe you beat Gears on "Insane?" They can go online and you have an achievement that proves it.
Achievmnets rock. The total Gamerscore is only a small part of it.

I love Gamerpoints, sure it doesn't really make the game better but it's always nice to get that little something extra that all your friends (and random people on Xbox live) can see.
I think Gamerpoints are Great, especially the ones that push you that little bit into doing thing you probably wouldn't have the motivation to do otherwise thus adding to the replay value.

They are pathetic if you are the kinda person who will buy shrek3 just so you can get achievements.
But heres where it gets good.. just earlier today I was playing Aeigs wings with some friends of mine... and there is an achievement for playing thorugh a level without firing and one for without getting hit.
Now this game has 4 player co-op.. so we are all making sure that one of us (whoever is going for the achievement) doesnt get hit. And beleiveit or not.. it was FUN.
Without having an achievement unlocked at the end of the level we would never have went out of our way to make the game in a different way.
That to me is what achievements all about.Â

Shouldn't it be up to the game iteself to provide you with unlockable content instead of your Xbox giving you points that practically do nothing.Â

Don't be an idiot just to be negative. My whole post was about how achievements are fun and can encourage you to play games in different ways and try for new goals BESIDES just finishing the game. The online record was only two sentences of my post.
Â
Unlockable content and rewards is up to the game developers, not your Xbox360. I have a 360 and found achievments to be a complete waste of time. If I don't want to play GeOW, what does 200 headstomps = 10 points matter to me?Â

I could care a less about the points. It just gives an intresting and different ways for playing a game. In a way it adds reply value to a game. For example, you would never sit down one day and say; let me try to score 48 points in the first quater while playing NCAA football. But acheivement motivate you to play the differently. And again if you dont care about playing the game differently you DONT have to.
And like I said before.. I am not one of those people who will play bad games just to get the achievements.Â

You just don't get it. It gives you a reason to try new things and play games in new ways. YEs... it is only "useless points" and a popo-up box. But it is actually fun to try new things especially when the game tells you when you succeed. I think it is awesome that they went for that achiemement like that. They got to enjoy the game in a way they never would have tried otherwise. It's called REPLAY VALUE and achievement points have done more for replay value than any other invention this side of online multiplayer. You haters will never get it. It is not about bragging... it is about getting more fun out of a game. Isn't that what every gamer would want? More fun?
you know whats funny, people say achievements are useless points, how is playing a game to gain and achievement any more "useless" than playing a game PERIOD?
gaming on the whole is useless, dont make it seem like achievement points make playing a game useless  Â
Achievements are just a metagame that falls under the same basic principle inherentin almost every bit of (good) game design: Making the player feel rewarded for the time and effort he put into the game.
Thats pretty much what every game does. The sense of progression, accomplishment, or closure are the rewards for playing and beating through a game. Achievements just add on more to that.
But im not a particularly big fan of them, probably because i understand why it works so well. Any game i enjoy should be enjoyable on its own merits. I shouldnt need extra incentives to replay it.Â
Truth be told I wouldnt be playing games as long like Dead rising without achievements. It gave me a reason to play more...even after I beat the game....Achievements basically gives the game more replay value.killaj2786Exactly.

I agree man.. people always assume that points give them bragging rights.
I've never met anyone in person or over XBL who goes around "bragging" about how many points they have. Â
