Although I'm bored to death with anything that involved swords and magic, TW3 held my interest long enough to get me pretty far in the game. A combination of potions (for me and my sword), magic attacks, sword attacks, and dodging worked well. The only mechanic which seems flawed is the parry. But, I rarely stood still long enough to use parry. So, no big deal to me. Riding Roach wasn't a problem either, using mouse and keyboard.

I'm not bored with TW3 itself. I'm bored with the genre in general. Same old gloomy medieval setting. No loud BANG BANG. I'd feel the same with other games in similar settings. ;)

I have no problems with GS giving it a 10.

@Jag85: you listed Soulsborne, and 3 other games with contentious combat. Not only is that an incredibly short list that suggests TW3 may indeed be above average for live-action swordplay, but the combat in those games isn't exactly unambiguously great

Bloodborne had the worst story ever, it was barely cohesive.

TW3 >>> Bloodborne in everything except combat.

yes it is, it shouldn't even be debatable that the souls games, dragon's dogma, monster hunter, and FFXV have great combat

story in the soulsborne games is not spelled out to the player via cutscenes and explicit narrative sequences. that being said bloodborne easily has the best lore and story of the soulsborne games. what about it did you not like?

I haven't played TW3 but from Youtube videos I've watched, it looks beautiful and interesting to explore, the combat is simple but looks good to me. Oh the ladies, Yennifer, Ciri ... are simply gorgeous. This is enough to make it the best fantasy open world action RPG this gen to me :)

In terms of combat, it's sub-par compared to other top-tier modern RPGs in that department.

Like what? Most RPGs have totally awful sword combat - I'd say TW3 is well above average, being bested primarily by Souls games which better shine in that department due to that being their defining feature (they are barely RPGs; even less so than TW3). The mindless clicky-clicky of Skyrim? Retro point-and-clicky of Pillars of Eternity? Those are not compelling examples of swordplay

I've asked this question and no one can come up with a solid answer. A lot of these people(on Gamespot forums) just rave about how TW3 combat sucks, but they can't name anything that's better except for the Souls series in terms of sword and board combat. Lol

Souls, Bloodborne, Dragon's Dogma, Monster Hunter, Final Fantasy XV, to name a few.

Sorry, but I disagree with Monster Hunter. FF XV, I haven't played yet, but for some reason, I doubt it.

I could sort of see Dragon's Dogma, but I enjoy it less overall. Simply because the game turns into kind of a grindfest with lots of spongey enemies. Really not a fan of that.

9.2 vs 8.2 on metacritic. Excuse me for having my doubts. I didn't discount it outright, so step off your high horse.

Although, I don't think I'm far off the mark with this glitchy mess.

And regular enemies just look braindead. They barely move or fight back. Lol!

@princeofshapeir: 1) i didn't say souls games don't have great combat, I said the other 3 you listed have debatable combat. The web is littered with people hating the combat from those games. Your option that they are great does not mean they are unambiguously great. Give me a turn-based FF any day. 2) your reply basically fed into my point: that there are not that many modern RPGs with better realtime swordplay combat, and those that have them are often not RPGs, but action games with RPG elements. Sticking with more purist RPG experiences, TW3 is well above the norm in terms of combat quality in my opinion.

Bloodborne is better than TW3 at everything but visuals and performance *if you're playing it on PC*. The story was great. The lore is as close to perfect as you'll find. The setting is one of the best in gaming and just the whole package (with the amazing DLC) is approaching perfection. I loved TW3 and i will never shit on that game but the combat system, inventory management, exploration (lots of places to explore but what you find isn't only trash for the most part, but you pretty much never find anything exciting) were trash and that is especially true when compared to BB.

I think the main thing that I liked in Bloodborne, lore aside, was the premise itself. The Victorian backdrop with some of the best use of lovecraft themes I've seen in a game just makes Bloodborne my favourite in the series.

Before Witcher 3, I played games just out of boredom. I had trouble playing games as I found most stories cliche, boring, or something else. I would also revert to some online game like BF, LOL, Dota, Smite..etc

After I played Witcher 3, I got to say; the game ignited the fire in my heart for single player games again. Yet, there is this disappointment. I can't seem to find a game that close to it in story telling, combat, exploration, open world. They always lack a characteristic that tends to bog it down

I agree with you OP. In terms of dialogue, story, character, and visual design, The Witchers 2 and 3 are second to none. I even love the combat. I honestly don't see what people's issues are with it. Maybe I have low standards or maybe I'm just not as prone to being affected by or simply regurgitating internet pop negativity as much as most.

Divinity Original Sin 2 will be just as good.

Are you saying that Divinity OS2 will be a massive drop in quality from the first game? Because that's the only way it would be on the same level as TW3.

Lmao, that's bullshit right there. Just because you hate a game's style doesn't meant that lots of other people do too. I didn't play Persona 3 until a couple months ago and it was the best game I played this year, it's that good.

I played the beginning of the game, maybe was 2 hours into the game? I remember killing this female ghost near a well; outside of town. I enjoyed the bit that I played, some other game distracted me though from playing this fully. I hear great things about this game, not sure if I should give it a try, are these the type of games that progressively get better the more I play? The city in the blood & wine expansion looks gorgeous!

@kinky-unikorn: IMO it gets much better after a while. It starts off slowly and is easy to get mired in the bland land mudholes in Velen. But force yourself to keep moving and the world opens up, the story opens up, the interesting characters keep coming, and so-on

They are all missing out. Nioh is rich with historical and cultural references AND it has the best gameplay.

People who sleep on Nioh are reminding me of the Demons Souls days. Better draw those lessons y'all and jump on the Nioh train!
